Autumn opened her bag and pulled out a pair of white gloves with the fingers snipped off. She slid them on with a barely audible sigh of relief. "I love you, my hobo gloves!" she said as she kissed the back of her left hand and breathed in and out gently, calming herself as she passed the alley without a sideways glance. She thought she saw a flicker of green light, but didn't look. She was too afraid to.
A short while later, Autumn sat at McDonalds, sipping on a latte while she perched on a stool, biting her lip thoughtfully. What the hell had happened? She must have been sick and hallucinated, she decided finally dumping her paper cup in the trash can and pushed open the door, slipping out into the evening light. She got halfway across the town when she realised,
"Crap! My bag! I left it behind!"
And by now Macca's had probably closed. She sat down on the curb, feeling tears prick her eyelids. There was something seriously wrong with her, she decided.

Autumn Flayren awoke with a gasp, her golden-blue eyes wide as she sat up abruptly. She wondered what she had been dreaming of. She could still remember someone crying. A guy? She couldn’t remember. Sizzling could be heard from the kitchen below her room. She gazed around her room, taking in the striped gold duvet and the baby-blue painted walls with her sport awards hung up on them. She wrinkled her nose at the scent of burnt meat and swung herself reluctantly out of bed, pulling on a pair of jeans and an old t-shirt with Will Smith inscribed on it. Then she padded down the stairs, running fingers through her pale blonde hair.
“I should’ve known” Autumn muttered as she saw her younger brother, Austin, cooking burnt sausages. The eggs were flopped onto a plate, rejected. “Aus, for the last time, a fourteen year-old boy should not be cooking” she said.
“A sixteen year-old girl shouldn’t patronize her brother”
“Jeez, big word. Scary.”
“Not as scary as you in the morning!”
She bonked him on the head with the toaster cord. “I’m making toast. Want any?” Austin stared at the sausages thoughtfully. “I guess so.” Autumn plugged the toaster in and started to make toast as Austin threw away the sad remnants of the breakfast he had tried to make. Autumn rolled her eyes and chewed a piece of toast as she looked at her brother.
When Autumn got three streets away from the school she felt eyes on her. She turned around, expecting some random dirty old man-there were a lot around here, she didn’t think much of it- but what she wasn’t expecting was a teenage guy. He blinked at her and a slow smile came over him as he met her gaze with green eyes. He looked maybe seventeen, a year older than her, and there was something catlike in the grace in which he moved when he walked down a nearby alley. He turned once, slightly, catching her eye before disappearing down the alleyway. Autumn frowned. He didn’t look familiar. She shook her head and walked on to the high school.
Autumn waited patiently outside the school after classes had finished. One of the teachers had forgotten to give her back her workbook. She ignored the jock-type guy who sidled up near her. “Hey, nerd” he sneered, grabbing her pack. Autumn reached out for it desperately. “That’s mine!” The jock looked amused. “That’s why I stole it, nerd” Autumn blinked back tears furiously. Then something inside her snapped. “Asshole” she hissed at him. He went still. “What did you call me?” he said quietly, his eyes cold. Autumn knew she wasn’t being smart, but she forced herself on. “Are you deaf as well as dumb then?” she retorted. He raised a fist at her face and she flinched back slightly as he snarled at her. “You’re just a stupid nerd girl” he said angrily. Autumn raised an eyebrow. “Nerds are smart people. I can’t be a stupid nerd” she said plainly. He snickered as he swung a fist...
..And a burning feeling spread along Autumn’s arms, from her chest as anger filled her mind. She raised both arms fast, too quickly to see clearly, and a burst of golden-blue energy shot from her outstretched hands, almost as if it had shot from a gun. The boy staggered back, feeling his chest. His eyes were stretched wide with astonishment. Then, he fell onto his back, gazing blankly at the sky. Autumn’s eyes flickered from him to her arms, where a crackle of blue could be seen. She realised no one was around, so she grabbed her backpack and left the dead boy there, guilt striking her as she walked down the street she had this morning, when she saw the alley the boy had walked down. She paused, and looked down there. She had the strangest feeling someone was down there. She shrugged to herself, it wasn’t like she could go home, she felt way too wretched and guilty. Sometimes it was really bad to have a conscience.
