September 2012 Challenge - Be My Buddy
I'm in! My buddy will have to pick from my *Books I Own* list. If you suggest a book in the series please make sure that I've read the book preceeding the one you suggest if it's not the first book in the series. Also no classics please unless they're by jules verne or arthur conan doyle.
This is too funny. Another group I'm in is doing something really similar for September. We've been paired off, and we have to compare books with our buddy and pick one that we've read and is on the other person's tbr.I'm in. My tbr shelf is ready and waiting. All I ask is that my buddy have pity regarding page length. I already have a lot of pages to read for September.
We should all have backup choices in mind in case our buddy can't get hold of the first choice.
jaxnsmom wrote: "We should all have backup choices in mind in case our buddy can't get hold of the first choice..."Good suggestion, JMom.
Go on then, I'm in. tbr shelf has been stocked...
note to buddy - if there's a series, I'd rather not read them out of sequence - yes, I am that much of a nerd.
edited - I feel obliged to point out that some of the books on the tbr shelf are one's I've read before, but pre-joining GR, and are worth a second visit.

Yay! This was so much fun when we did it last year. I'm in, but I'll set up a special shelf to make it easier.Ditto on the series.
Oh yes, that means I'm in :)
So this is a first for me but I really would like to participate in this :)Sounds like fun!
Book should be picked from my "tbr-and-available" shelf please.
Yay! I'm in. :) Ditto on series - if you accidentally suggest book three I'll just go ahead and assume you meant book one. ;)
My preferred shelf is read-for-mt-tbr-challenge (http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...). But note, please, that this is a challenge shelf, so some of those books are already 'read' - plz choose a 'to-read.'
Thanks Janice, and Buddy!
Ooh yes please. I do have a couple of books to read already in September, but I liked this challenge before so count me in.
I'm in. My preferred reading shelf is 2012-to-read (http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...), and the possible books are the ones that do not have ratings next to them. Thanks!
I just joined the groupand would love to try this challenge i have plenty of books on my to read list. I'd also like more nook friends if there are other nook lovers out there you can add me by alhint@msn.com thanks for this fun challenge.

I'm excited that you're going to join in on this challenge as your first foray into the activities we have.
Throw my name in the hat too!Use my Home-Alone shelf. Need to get my "owned" books read. Note some on this shelf have been read and rated, so choose a "to-read" one.
This sounds like fun! I think I may have to pass on this one though because I'll be needing to read the textbooks for my graduate classes, and some research and a trade book for the Book Club in this one class. Plus I need to try to work on my rainbow! We'll do it again though right...sometime maybe next summer? *hint*hint! ;)
Judy wrote: "Aw, too bad, Robin, but understand. Janice may have to make this a yearly event!"Or a bi-annual event, or a when-ever event. :)
Sorry you have to read dry textbooks. Would naming your prof as your buddy for this challenge make it more fun to read?
Gaeta1 wrote: "wait--we can define the perameters of the challenge?"The only thing you can define is what shelf you want your buddy to pick from. And it makes sense that if it is a book in a series, that it be from the middle.
Haha, now THAT'S multi-tasking.Although I remember doing the same thing with the year-long challenge last year.
I want in! I would like my buddy to pick from either my tbr books I own or tbr "on my kindle." I agree with Jmom that we should pick two, just in case. I always like to do that as well!
Two suggestions is a good idea - I refuse to finish a book I can tell I'm not appreciating, and I'm sure I still own some of these despite recent culls.
In! This looks great to make my next decision for me.Could my buddy choose from the my ATW-Rainbow shelf (combining all my challenges!) please?
Also, anyone else having a bad 90s song by La Bouche going around their heads? "Be my buddy, want to be my buddy?"
Janice - BIG QUESTION. I notice several people wanting their book to be chosen from their Rainbow shelf. Isn't double-dipping only allowed with Toppler books? So a book read for this could not be used for Rainbow Challenge? On a personal note, I hate to see people creating a special shelf for their buddy to choose from. It takes away a lot of the fun if I'm just picking which of their September books they're going to read first, instead of being able to pick a book I think you might overlook and I thought was terrific. I hope I get a buddy who gets into the spirit of this month's challenge, and lets me have my way with their tbr ☺
Jaxnsmom, I understand that concern, but at least for me, I have a lot of books on my tbr shelf that I don't own and don't have easy access to, and I'd rather work through what is already in my house! Also I'm hoarding some for an around the US challenge next year, and don't want to use up a state that I will need then!
I was working on the theory that if I couldn't get hold of a book, my buddy would be prepared to pick again...
Any tips from previous experience on what makes a good pick? One you've read before, so you can discuss? Or maybe pick one that you'd like to read, to see what someone else thinks first.

I took a look at the rules for the Rainbow challenge, and it clearly says that you may not double dip with the monthly challenge. So pointing your buddy to your rainbow shelf is a no-no. I guess everyone uses their shelves a little differently which is why I said that you should point your buddy to the shelf you would prefer he/she chooses from. I use my TBR shelf for books that I already own or have borrowed. I have a shelf called Wishlist for those that intrigue me and I would like to read somewhere down the road.
The intention of this challenge is that your buddy picks a book for you. There will be no "second choices" unless it's next to impossible to obtain the book. We will deal with those situations on an individual basis if they come up.

And the bigger the TBR of my buddy, the better ;-)
Hmm okay. Well I didn't read the fine print again. Oops.I guess I will withdraw then in case my buddy picks something I only have one option for for my rainbow. I will cheer from the sidelines! Woooo!

What about your Around the World challenge? That's another group altogether and we don't have any restrictions there. :)
Ok, so I went through all my books and made a shelf for next year's around the US and also a rainbow shelf that are exclusive. So now my To Read shelf is the one to use for this.
I can't wait for the buddies to be selected! It's nice to be back participating in the group's activities since I sat out for a few months :)

Tomorrow morning, when I wake up I will make a list of all the participants. And tomorrow evening, I will post the buddies.
Well the one I just completed for August was so much fun I'm certainly up for trying another one. So count me in. My "To Read" shelf is open for selection.
hi! I just joined the group. Can I join this challenge? I'd love to participate! I'll be fixing my TBR list just in case I can. :) :)

If you don't mind, I've a hypothetical situation and question:
1. I sign up; you assign buddies.
2. My buddy selects a book, from a specific shelf, ..."
I'm sure Janice will take that into account for the scoring, Chelsea.
I would say the only impact that you not finishing your chosen book would have is that you wouldn't complete the challenge :)
And there's the 'secret buddy' that can step in too :)
Good question, Chelsea. Your buddy's role is to pick a book for you to read. (You won't be picking a book for the same person. You will be someone else's buddy.)Your challenge is to read that book. If like steps in the way and you are unable to finish the book, it will be like any other challenge. You won't be able to complete the challenge. There will be no effect on your buddy.
Maybe you'd like to ask your buddy to stay away from the clunksters on your TBR shelf.

Everyone doing this challenge needs a buddy. Cut off date for indicating whether or not you want to participate will be August 26th. I will put everyone's name into a hat and draw their buddies. I will post everyone's buddy on August 27th.
You will then go to your buddy's TBR shelf (or another shelf that person may have indicated) and select a book for that person to read.
Once all the participants have received their books, I will post some scoring options, just to make things a bit interesting.
If you want to participate, please indicate your intention and let us know what shelf your buddy should pick from.
Do not fret - if you come to the party late, the "secret buddy" can visit your shelves and get you into the challenge.
Go!
