Has anyone else read The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West? The only reason I read it is because it's in the Modern Library's Top 100 novels of the 20th century which I've been half-heartedly picking away at for the past decade.
It's awesome, and totally transgressive. I couldn't believe it was written in 1939. The protagonist spends most of the novel trying to figure out how to rape the object of his spurned love, and the ending has a very contemporary, anti-epiphanic feel.
Anyone else pleasantly surprised by this book? If you haven't read it, check it out.
