I know, all those government ecological people, they'd all want that. Especially a lot of other countries also.
Oh my gods, do NOT even suggest it to the government! They might actually take us seriously or something!!!
LOL Nightshade! I think Unwinding is just a bad sign of parenting! I mean seriously, the parents would unwindn them right after they steal something! I think the parents who do unwinding are bad parents! They don't try anything, they just give up their kid!! Its like Unwinding is in a parent handbook or something! Like this!
Chapter 1 of the Parent Handbook:
When your child becomes rebelious or does something bad, you are to send them to be unwound right away! Being unwind is the most effective way and the most responsible way of a parent to help their child
Jeeze! What great parents!*sarcastic*
Here's a bit from The Parents' Unwinding Handbook...
For your ease and peace of mind, there are a variety of harvest camps to choose from. Each facility is privately owned, state licensed, and federally funded by your tax dollars. Regardless of the site you choose, you can feel confident that your Unwind will receive the finest possible care from our board-certified staff as they make their transition into a divided state.
No, I didn't make it up. Yes, it's the intro to Part Six.

That's the only bit that's in the book! The bit I posted, I mean. It's in the intro to Part Six.
Definitely the creepy part is how easily it could happen...and how quickly my parents would be signing me up for it...:P

Well, it's sort of a warning. Shusterman shows a world in which abortion is illegal, so that unwinding and storking are the only ways to deal with unwanted children. It's a message to pro-lifers, like, "would you rather have abortion or THIS?"
you see what i'm saying?
Aaahh..Ugh..Ok I'm trying to remember what he said. It was something along the lines of dealing with that story about the Two Women, The Baby, and That King. And the women fighting over the baby, and then coming to a compromise. So then he thought of killing the kid as a sort of "compromise". And(originally he hadn't thought of Unwinding..just killing it at 13-18 and throwing away the body) But he couldn't figure out HOW/WHY any society would do that..so..no go.SECOND PART
Then he said he this friend of his needed some kind of new organ, and then he got this idea as to HOW/WHY it could be useful to that society. They could take apart the kids and give the parts TO the people who need organs, prothetic patients, etc.
I think that's most of why/how he came up with the idea.
WAIT! I REMEMBER THAT STORY! It was in the Bible!
King Solomon and two of his wives and a baby (can't remember whose kid it was)... The two wives were fighting over the baby, and finally he said "If you both want it, cut it in half so you can both have it." He wasn't serious, he was trying to show how ridiculous the situation was. But the wives took him seriously...!

no i think it was one of the women took him seriously and said "okay!" but the other was like "no!" and the one who said no got to keep the baby ...
I thought the poiont of this situation was to see who loved the baby more. So the wife who loved the baby enough to not spllit it in half will get him? Idk, I saddly haven't read the bible but I feard about the story from a movie(ik, tacky) and in Twilight!
In Twilight...?
Also, personally, I think it was to show the two wives how stupid their argument was.

I think it was to see who loved the child more that they would protect it, rather than tear it about! It was in Eclipse. When Jacob told Bella he loved her so much that he won't tear her apart from choosing who to be with.

but idk i haven't read the bible. lol
I seriously don't believe in Unwinding. its a terrible thing to do to kids. don't the parents have a heart?! but i also dont like abortion. if that is what it is compared to. we read it in class as a read alous at school. however, i dont believe in abortion and thing unwinding is better than abortion. because the kid is still somewhat alive, like what the admiral did to harlan.
sorry but you think Unwinding is better than abortion? but an aborted child has not lived at all and doesn't have emotional feelings. a teenage kid is already living and can feel emotional pain.
a child growing in the mothers womb is alive and growing. dont think since its not born yet, its dead. yeah, i think abortion is worse.
I didn't say that the baby is dead – i know it's alive. and I'm not saying i like or favor abortion, either.yes, an unborn child is "alive and growing" as you said.
but a teenager is alive, growing, AND has emotions.
So they both are hurting living people. Neither is good. But I think Unwinding is better because they are living, somewhat. Abortion just eliminates the human.
The thing that makes it worse then abortion, to my mind, is the attitude the parents/gaurdians would have to have toward the whole procedure and towards the kid. I mean, I know that women who have abortions carry emotional scars, but how could you have your child, who you've known and cared for and loved all this time, drawn and quartered?
the unwound kids aren't really still alive, that's an excuse to kill the rents' guilty consciences :P
and yesh kelly, vey much O.o
and yesh kelly, vey much O.o
exactly! and it's not like the kid is really "living" -- he/she is just a prisoner in someone else's body ... like that part with that guy ... whats-his-face, it was like ci-fi, right? ... who had a piece of an unwound kid's brain, and he kept stealing stuff against his will. and then the unwound kid didn't even realize he was unwound, and he like forced ci-fi to go to his parents and he was all like "please don't unwind me!" that was sooo sad :'(

dear readers, I'm Italian translator and I'm finding this book amazing!!! Since you've read all the story (I've read only the opening two pages), could you tell me if I can translate "unwind" with the word "interrupt", I mean if the meaning of "interruption" could be the same of "unwinding", or if you could tell me a synonymous to indicate an "unwound" person? I'm getting mad to find the right Italian word !!!
UNWINDING is so....so.......so...........so CRUEL!!!!It's so SCARY! HARSH! EVIL! HORRIBLE!
i HATE it...!!!
huhhuhu.... T.T
ROLAND is so poor...... T.T

I really enjoyed the book; however, the premise is so far fetched that it almost ruined it for me. The whole abortion debate is: does a person become a person at conception or birth. Making the unwinding legal between the ages of 13 - 18 completely misses the point of the debate. There is no question of personhood AFTER birth, much less at the age of 13 (physically old enough to become a parent themselves). I decided to suspend my disbelief on this matter and I did really enjoy the book, so much so that I bought the rest of the books in the series. I liked the characters and I enjoyed the way the author switched perspectives during events. Overall, it was well worth the time and money.
To add-without the retroactive abortion premise, I could definitely see unwinding being accepted as a control measure of some sort...possibly government forced unwinding for those who don't excel in life or for convicts. Maybe children are given until 13 to prove their worth in society and if they fail, the government forces the child to be unwound.

I THINK IT'S HORRIBLE!
