A few things that I can't stand.1. When books are destroyed... say what you want, but all my books look almost new, and some i've had for years and have re-read many times.
2. Dog-eared pages. >.< I would never do this. I have even used my cell phone just so I can mark my page without doing this.
3. Broken book spines. This happens a lot with paperbacks, which I prefer over hardcovers. Did anyone get a paperback edition of Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater? It's awful! You can't even open it properly.
4. When they get new book covers in the middle of a series...
You can't go from
and
and then decide that this is better
. -_-5. Characters who have no backbone. And I don't mean they have to always be strong and perfect...but I hate when they are weak and dependent through out the entire book/series.
I can't think of more..but there is.
I hate dog earring! I also hate when I forget my page number.. I really hate Shades of Earth's cover, it's really ugly.
I hate when the plot of a book is taken over by romance. If the actual point in a book is for them to stop some war or something, why does the author write about "how this guy likes this girl and so does this guy and oh no she can't choose" half the time instead of the plot. However I also hate when there's an obvious pair of people who like one another and the whole way through your waiting for something to happen between them.
I feel conflicted… >__<
Things I Hate:
-Covers that don't relate at all to a book (One Example was the old shatter me cover!!)
-Really rushed endings in a book or endings that just don't seem like a real ending
-Talking about different societies yet not discussing the background on why they occurred this way

I hate seeing really worn/destroyed books I literally cringe at the sight. I quit reading Looking for Alaska because it was smashed in the recliner, but now I've brought myself to read that copy and relace it someday.:)
-Damsels in distress. Get off your ass and fight for yourself.-I hate it when people flip the book upside down and rests it open on the page they're on. It doesn't matter whether or not you're only having a break for like 30 seconds, the spine is getting damaged.
-Obsessive and over-protective guys. There are moments when it's cute but there's a line that authors sometimes cross and it's so annoying.
-When the font and/or text colour are different for no apparent reason.
-Flat characters
-There are some very inconsiderate readers out there who post spoilers without giving warnings. Or they was already a note asking people to keep the discussion spoiler-free, yet they continue to post them. A little part of me dies every time I encounter a spoiler, especially if it's from a book I've been waiting on for so long.
-(This is more for dystopians)When authors don't even bother mentioning how the society they created evolved from our own. Or they invented some half-assed reason that doesn't even make any sense. (
)
I'm sometimes a little annoyed by authors writing about stuff they have no clue about without doing some basic research w/ google or wikipedia.
I agree with everything everyone has said thus far!
Here's more things I hate:
-Instant Love
-Love Triangles (Just because it is used so frequently and is kind of obvious :P)
-TOO detailed writing
-Really slow book with no plot!

I just thought of another one:- A little part of me dies every time I see someone highlight pages of books. I don't care if the passage is especially awesome, does it have to be marked with something so permanent and bright? And have you guys seen those pictures where someone blacks out sentences and sometime even paragraphs of a page, and only leaves out like a handful of words to form new sentences? It looks cool, I know. But still.

I agree! At least an author could do is find some research to make sure everything is factual
Another pet peeve of mine is when every book today (or well many..) are being compared to the hunger games :P

My biggest, hugest, most annoying pet peeve regarding books??When authors don't complete them. No, not when they take too long to finish, or when they leave some questions at the end of a book or series, (although that is a bit annoying), but when an author starts a book, builds a world, creates interesting dialogue, creatively builds characterization, and all those other great things, but doesn't complete a book before cutting off and essentially saying to the reader, "Nope, now you have to wait until the next book to even discover the ending for the conflict in THIS book!" (Sorry for the massively long sentence!)
This in no way applies to all series. No, it applies to those series that just stop in the middle of the action without any sort of resolution. Each Harry Potter book had its own conflict that advanced the overarching conflict that was resolved in book seven. Each book also had its own resolution. Libba Bray's
A Great and Terrible Beauty series provided conflict and resolution in each book. Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief series is another excellent example - She could have stopped writing anywhere during that series and it would have been complete. Each book can stand on its own; its inclusion in the series only making the series stronger.
Maybe authors just are afraid to write a 600 page book these days or maybe they get bogged down or maybe they are after the money generated by a successful series or perhaps there are reasons I haven't considered, but I hate an incomplete book!
I hate when authors are rude to their readers. I know I will still read their books if they are good but is really annoying.
I hate when people only watch the movies based off of a book and think they know everything about the book, so they don't even bother to read it! I get that big books can be intimidating to some people but really? It just bugs me...
I hate when people only read books because of the movie and they claim they are the biggest fan. (Hunger Games)
Scott wrote: "I hate when people only read books because of the movie and they claim they are the biggest fan. (Hunger Games)"Totally agree!
I also hate the teams (Team Jacob, Edward, Peeta and Gale) because I feel they are meaningless and ruin the book for me.
I hate when the readers of a book make a book that includes a romance or love story all about the love story when it is just a very, very, tiny part of an otherwise great story. The love story is only there to enrich the story...

Agreed! This reminds me of the hunger games.
I hate when writers keep writing more books in a series just to make more money when really the series should have ended awhile ago.

I stopped reading that series after book 8.

The last good book was book 9.

So one of my pet peeves is just a terribly written book that just hasn't been edited, is completely cook cutter and you just don't get why it's published :P
Mine is ENDINGS THAT:Don't make sense No Passengers Beyond This Point and Two for Survival
or don't leave you any answers! The Giver
and The End
I hate boring female leads with no personality or backbone. I dunno, it is just annoying and you see it so often, especially in YA. I also hate insta-love. Or when the main male lead is instantly described as 'the most perfect hottest guy' that the female lead has ever seen. Or when characters are just too perfect and become unable to relate with. (GAH that was long)
