After his father the Emperor dies, leaving a higher-born son to ascend the throne, Genji had willingly left the city, sadly seeking a remote exile to the seacoasts of Suma and Akasi, leaving many tearful friends. That departure was mostly due to Genji's having recently angered the Heir-Apparent's mother, secretly entering her sleeping house to meet a young woman. (The physically ideal, culturally accomplished Genji judiciously and quietly breaks many social rules.) The young Emperor ailing, Genji, being needed, returns. These next chapters see his rise.
