Adriana Hello everyone. You can introduce yourself here. Tell us a little about yourself and some of your favorite books. I'll start.

I'm Adriana and I just started college. I have two older brothers that I love and two lazy dogs that I adore. I am an avid reader and blogger. Some of my favorite books are How Not to Be Popular, The Chocolate War, A Little Wanting Song, and The Lightning Thief

I love any type of book from the most mushy romance to dark horror.

Let me know what you guys think about the name of the group. I named it after Friends with Boys because as you all may consider like I do our most loved friends can come out of books.

Kristina (krinak) First of all, LOVE the name! I think it fits.

Second, hi! I'm Kristina, I love to read and write and that's bascially what I spend my days doing. I have to cats, Pancake and Blackberry and they are adorable. I am also obsessed with the TV show, Doctor Who. My favorite book is definitely, The Fault in Our Stars

message 3: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Yay! Glad you like it (:

Thanks for joining Kristina. Your cat names are... amazing! Doctor Who is one of my favorites too. I didn't see the last couple of episodes still but I know I'm going to miss Amy like I miss Rose... Do you wathc Sherlock Holmes on BBC too?

My cats are adorable too :) Pancake is a Siamese. I agree about Amy. She is staying for like... half of the seventh season. Then the new companion is coming, some brunette. I haven't seen Sherlock, but I heard it's great! John Green is amazing!!

Aren't Siamese... hairless? When I look at the new girl it's weird. She's so... not Amy. Thanks for letting me know! Sherlock is really really good. Moriarty (bad guy!) is complete evil genius. Sherlock is written or directed by the same guy for Doctor Who.

Josiah (kenjenningsjeopardy74) I think the reason that my favorites often come from many different eras of writing is that I've always made a conscious effort not to limit myself to books from any one time period. I love the variety of styles that have flourished through the years, and reading books from all of them ensures that I won't develop a limited sense of what good writing is supposed to be like. Being a fan of Newbery books also helps. I might never have discovered the writings of Rachel Field, Elizabeth Foreman Lewis, Elizabeth Yates or William H. Armstrong if I weren't a fan of the Newbery awards.

Yeah there are lists that date back pretty far I see which is crazy. 1922! That's a good start for me and you're right about older reads. Well there was at least one book that I read that was so different and not as notable as the other authors most famous work of the mixed-up files. George was a whole different side of books that I've ever read. Is there any other award lists that I should look out for?

message 14: by Josiah (new)

Josiah (kenjenningsjeopardy74) When one reads pretty much anything by E.L. Konigsburg, a good experience is assured! She's one of the most fascinating and insightful authors I've ever read. Others among her novels that I would readily suggest include About the B'nai Bagels, The Dragon in the Ghetto Caper and Journey to an 800 Number. I kind of pace myself when it comes to reading books by E.L. Konigsburg, just because I can't bear the thought of one day having read them all, and having no new ones to experience for the first time! Though she is still alive; and, as far as I know, she's still writing.

Besides the Newbery, the main award that I pay attention to is the Caldecott, though in recent years the Schneider Family Book award has also been a reliable indicator of excellence in YA and J literature.

message 15: by Adriana (new)

Adriana You know I always think that even if I want to read an older read that I won't be able to find it. But look at that! My library has two out of three of those. I think I'm going to have to read The Dragon in the Ghetto Caper.

Aw! Oh no.... Now I'm thinking "What if I read all of Robert Cormier's books!!!???" He's no longer with us so I could never experience his books for the first time either...

Thanks!

Some of his books are fairly hard to find these days. Copies of
Now and at the Hour, A Little Raw on Monday Mornings and I Have Words to Spend: Reflections of a Small-Town Editor can't be found at most libraries or bookstores. I know what you mean, though. I have the same thoughts when it comes to Robert Cormier!

You're right about the library although I do see that there is one you listed there. I don't know about the bookstore though...

Another Robert Cormier fan!

message 18: by Josiah (new)

Josiah (kenjenningsjeopardy74) Of course! There's a reason why I generally refer to him as "The Master" in my reviews here on Goodreads! :-)

Another book of his that's hard to find these days is Take Me Where the Good Times Are. It's one of four books (along with the other three I mentioned) that he originally wrote and had published for adult readers, but which later on was re-categorized as young-adult because that's where Robert Cormier found his greatest success.

message 19: by Adriana (new)

Adriana You do? You're are AWESOME! How did I not know that you liked Cormier?

message 20: by Josiah (new)

Josiah (kenjenningsjeopardy74) I don't know. We talked about it in one of the first conversations we ever had here on Goodreads, as part of one of our book clubs last fall. :-)

Josiah (kenjenningsjeopardy74) It's easy to forget about conversations that took place nearly a year ago. ;-) I just have an unusual memory, because I retain nearly everything.

Nathan (nthnlwly) Hello! I'm Trevor. I'm 18; I have loved YA books for a long time, but just recently discovered the joys of Middle Grade reads! A few of my favorite MG/YA books: The Giver, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I also just this year read The Book Thief and Will Grayson, Will Grayson which I loved! I wouldn't call them "favorites" yet, but they were very very good. ;)

Thanks for the invite, I look forward to reading with all of you! :D

message 25: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Hay Trevor! Need to read The Perks of Being A Wallflower!!! The movie looks soooo good. Plus I've had it on my TBR list for forever.
Thanks for joining (:

Josiah (kenjenningsjeopardy74) I've been doing rather well. This is the first group here on Goodreads that I've been an active part of for several months, so I'm still getting used to checking for new posts every time I sign on to the site. It's nice being part of a group, though.

Adriana Hey Viv! Thanks for joining :D

message 32: by Viv (new)

Viv (a_pocky_box) Same with me to Josiah. It's a super good idea to do a TBR group. My list is forever growing bigger. I need to tackle some of those forgotten books on my shelf.

Hey! I'm Noelle. I love to read, write, and ride horses. I have two little brothers and no one to talk to about books. (Except for my Hunger Games obsessed friend Skylar) Some of my faves are The Hunger Games series (TEAM PEETA!!!), the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series, and the Harry Potter series. I'm currently reading Divergent by Veronica Roth and loving it! I really like YA fiction, except Twilight. I also love classics and action. Any recommendations? Thanks!
xoxo,
N

message 37: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Hi Noelle! This book group will actually be disbanded soon but thanks for joining anyway. If you love Divergent you might want to consider Delirium. The Liar Society series and The Lying Game series are two really great suspense series that I love. Born Wicked if you like witches is brilliant! A Little Wanting Song is another wonderful read.

The only book I can think of right now with some action in it is The Maze Runner.

I was Team Gale in the beginning but I changed my vote (view spoiler). Have you seen the pictures of the catching fire movie?

For classics I'd recommend The Chocolate War only if you don't mind if the book is... kind of dark. I don't remember quite well.

I've wanted to ride a horse for a long time now! Do you have your own? What's it's name? I have two older brothers and yet the oldest one was the "reader" in the family I read way more than him and not too much adult sci-fi ugh...

Have you written actual short stories or are you a poem girl?

Some great groups I'm a part of that you might want to check out:

If you like challenges: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/5...

If you like buddy reads: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/8...

Percy Jackson group: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3... (haven't been on here for awhile but it's still plenty active and the people who run it are great)

Sorry about that! I feel kind of bad but the group will still be here all of January if you want to hang out till then.

I'd love to hang out till then! I've wanted to read Maze Runner for a while now, I'll check it out soon. I will talk to you about how amazing Peeta is forever, so that's great that you changed sides! I don't have a horse, but I ride all the time. Hoping for one soon!! I have written short stories, they're fun. Thanks for welcoming me!!

message 39: by Adriana (new)

Adriana No problem. Thanks for hanging around (:
What made you like him right away? At first I thought Katniss was kind of mean and Peeta seemed a little weak because in the woods he would make lots of noise and some other stuff. I realized that Katniss painted him out to be weak when he was actually pretty strong hearted. He was always protecting her and being him. I don't know how I didn't catch that right away. Katniss seems so much nicer in the movie. I really like the actor who's playing Finnick. I think he'll be good.

message 40: by Emma (new)

Emma Olsen (emmanoelleolsen) | 43 comments Mod
Well, at first I fell totally in LOVE with him because you could tell what a genuinely good person he is. I hear that "Peeta's weak!" all the time. But he's not. Besides the obvious, (Who can lift a 100 pound sack of flour over his head?) he is unwavering in his love for Katniss and his desire to stay true to himself and THAT is how he is strong. I agree about Sam Claflin. I'm soooooo excited for Catching Fire. How about you?

message 41: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I admit I originally thought that about him but he keeps on. He has endured... I guess I'm trying to say that he's a great guy and just because he's nice and doesn't know how to pick up a bow and arrow like Katniss doesn't mean he's weak. I'm pretty excited XD
I actually don't even know when it comes out. That's weird. I guess since there hasn't been a trailer yet. I hope there's a song like Taylor Swift did for Hunger Games. I was surprised by how different she sounded. It was good! I want to know what they'll come up with. Come to think of it I need to read the trilogy over again for the third time. It's not as fresh in my mind as it should be.

Hello there :)
Just joined and am having a look around now. So far I really like it, seems cozy ;)
I really love reading and my favorite place as a child was the library ;) Now it is everywhere my cat and a good book is. I adore here, she is a really cute and loving cat. Her name is Rocky, but she is a female (long story, that was before my time) She is the cat of my boyfriend, but she adopted me when we first met. ;)
Favorite books is a really difficult topic, there are so many books I love. But i really like Warrior Cats, the Sisters Grimm, lots of Gail Carson Levine and Terry Pratchett and so on. I really like most books that are retelling ore have to do with Fairytale.

Hi! I just joined too. Your cat sounds awesome, I wish I had one. The Sisters Grimm series is awesome, I just finished it. I've read Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine but not much else. If you like those kind of books, you should consider reading Princess of the Midnight Ball and its sequels. I think you'll like them. :)
xoxo,
Noelle

Hello Noelle :)
She is awesome ;) and will love to hear that you think so too ;) I still need the last 4 books from the sisters grimm but I'm planing to get all but the last one soon. I'm going to wait till the last one is out in paperback before I get it, so all are the same. But I think I will start rereading them from the beginning first, else there will be so many thing I remember anymore I guess and that is only half the fun then (it is quiet some time ago that I read the other ones)
Oh good that you remind me I got princess of the midnight ball as e-book from a friend for Christmas. Did you read it?
I really like Ella Enchanted and The Two Princesses Of Bamarre and Fairest was nice too. I was planing on rereading them all some day soon :)
I had a short look at your bookshelf you read lots of books ore have them on your to read-shelf that I like ore want to read too :)

message 45: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Hi Boekelfje (:
I love The Sisters Grimm too! But even more than that I LOVE Puck. I'm sure you'll like the rest of the books. So you don't know who the bad person is!!!? Prepared to be shocked.

I had a cat named Mable. I didn't know it's gender. Then it grew up and that cat was such an adonis. He was gorgeous and beautiful. I later named him Jake. I'm not good with names...

Thanks for joining. Hmm... I think I need to reevaluate whether or not to stop the group. There is a little bit more activity on here and you both seem active. If I were to keep on do you think you would be active? Plus, what books would you want to read next month?

message 46: by Adriana (new)

Adriana OMG! Noelle! Have you seen the picture of Finnick really close to Katniss? Like he's right behind her. He's such a flirt.

message 47: by Boekelfje (new)

Boekelfje | 49 comments Mod
Hello Adriana :)
I have a guess and I'm pretty sure it is right, but so disappointing and I'm not 100% sure why this person should do it, but i probably find out in the next book. I can't wait to read them all.

Hihi, well I'm not so good with names myself, so good thing I didn't had to name ore cat. The silly thing is Rocky is a boys name but it still feels right, guess it's just cause I'm used to it. Well they new she was a female and it wasn't the name she originally got. I guess as long as you love and care for them they don't care so much about what you call them.
I would really find it a pity if you stop the group, cause I was happy to find it and am planing to be quiet active ;) At least I'm going to try my best to do so ;)
Hm, I will think about which books would be nice (hihi, being mean, everyone can read the first sisters grimm book with me again :P )

After I found out now how to add books I will see, kids books we cold read:

The Wide-Awake Princess
The Frog Princess
Dragon Slippers

yes I'm going with the fairytale topic hear ;)

The Familiars
The Secret Zoo
The Magic Half

and countless other ones ;) was just naming some things that came to my mind.

For young adult, I just try to finally read

A Great and Terrible Beauty

That were just some options ;) I'm of to amazon to order a sisters grimm book now ;)

Oh yes, I forgot, I guess what is really important is that we all want to read the book and can get our hands on it. Sometimes there are books I would like to read like some of the ones that are from the January reads but I can't get them at the library and I can't always buy new books (I'm not in an English speaking country so I guess that makes it twice as difficult :( )

I read Princess of Glass, which is the sequel to Princess of the Midnight Ball, on accident!! I loved it, so I'm probably gonna get the first one soon. Wow, that's cool that you looked at my bookshelf. I love girly books but I have a soft spot for action, classics, and ALL YA except for Twilight.
