Marren | 764 comments Mr.Bennet!

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Doesn't he bother you at all?
His indifference to his family for most of it is a little bad, as is his behaviour to his wife.
But, I do love him!

message 21: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments ....because of the rules of the period about everything passing to a male heir or relative, there is not much that Bennet could have done. If he was wealthier but yes he could have stash a little more away but imagine buying ribbons and the like for these girls. I think he let his wife dilly dally with the girls and only got firm when Lydia run away with Wickham. I see Mr. Bennet as a man who had 5 girls he did not know what to do with them.

message 22: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
That's true. And I was glad he straightened out a bit when Lydia's act came and hit him in the face!

message 23: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments No parent is perfect but when one acknowledges they are wrong and wise up, it shows that they are considering their children.

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
That's true. :) his relationship with Lizzy is great :)

Who's people fav and least fav Bennet daughter? (out of Younger ones so Lydia Kitty Mary.)

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) After Lizzie and Jane, my fave is Kitty - she's not as wild as Lydia and I like the idea of her future as described at the end of the book, about her spending more time with Jane and Elizabeth... I often wonder how it turned out for her! I'm sure someone has written a spin-off...

As for least favourite I think Mary. She just seems an oddity compared to her sisters and some of the things she says are annoying... I like the hints in the adaptations that Mary would have been happy to marry Mr Collins. That would've been interesting...

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I think im with you! I like Kitty and I think she wi turn out well in the end...
Although, Lydia is annoying!!!
It would have been interesting to see Mary married to Collins! Would it have worked?

message 27: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I think it would have worked but maybe not as well as with Charlotte. I think Charlotte is best suited to dealing with Lady Catherine! Imagine having Mary and Mr Collins as a couple come to visit you - it'd be hard going!

I agree with you completely! Well, almost completely. Lydia was my least favorite, not Mary. My mom and I were thinking the other day that Mary should have married Mr. Collins, and I loved the way the book ended for Kitty. She could have turned out really well if she would have followed more after Jane and Lizzie.

I couldn't face having Mary and Mr Collins.... :O

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) They'd be the relatives you'd always want to avoid!

message 31: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Definitely! :S
Too much... Too much to stand... Even for the nicest tempered people like Jane (and I'm more like Lizzy so I definitely wouldn't be able to stand it!)

message 32: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Thinking more: More minors:

Charlotte Lucas

Admiral Croft and Mrs Croft

Frederica Vernon

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
love them as well!

message 34: by A. (new)

A. (ahartleyscribbles) | 115 comments I liked Charlotte really well, but I felt sorry for her. I thought, like Lizzie, that she shouldn't have married Mr. Collins. Surely something else would come up. Even if I died an old maid. Hmm...but I guess back then, if you weren't married, you had no place to live. So I feel bad for her.

message 35: by Marren (last edited Oct 02, 2012 11:46AM) (new)

Marren | 764 comments I think Charlotte knew what she was getting into with Mr. Collins. I don't feel sorry for her, maybe when I reread I might change my mind. You are right about the time period, most women were completely depend on husband for support.

message 36: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I think she says it herself 'I am not romantic' so this offers her a home and everything and safety. She enjoys running her own home as well!

message 37: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Exactly Soph, I agree.

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Charlotte seems quite happy with her situation so I don't feel sorry for her but she's not one of my favourite characters... I prefer someone with a little spirit and passion.

message 39: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
i agree because she entered into it willingly really...
Lizzy is the type of person i prefer as well!

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Lizzy is fantastic.
I didn't feel sorry for Charlotte or Lydia because of their bad marriages because they both knew what they were getting (well, Lydia might not have but that's her own fault for being so foolish).

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
How could you pity Lydia!!! Silly girl!!

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I never said I pitied Lydia!
Foolish, silly, selfish, idiotic, self-obsessed, girl. Ugh, ugh ugh. Mrs. Bennet is the same and she just makes things worse for her girls.

message 43: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Thats not what I meant. I meant how could anyone pity her!! I know you don't - great use of adjectives!!

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you. I pride myself in my literary ability.

just kidding... I have no literary ability.

;) hahahaha

message 46: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca May | 561 comments I like minor characters like, for example, Margaret Dashwood, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Jane Bennett and Georgiana Darcy.

However, I must ask - why does everyone like Mr Bennett so much? I found his cynicism amusing to begin with, but by the end of the book it was almost tiring, and I was disgusted with his almost complete indifference to his daughters and wife, save Lizzy.

Also, can someone correct me if I am wrong in thinking that he said his favorite son-in-law was Wickham? Because, if he did - Ugh! Poor Darcy :( (and Bingley)

message 47: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Well. It was annoying. But he did become more serious when Lydia ran away and everything. And he did scold himself about his behaviour and how he should have done more when they realised they wouldn't have any sons.
Also in regards to Wickham, he did say that but he wasn't being serious. He was again being sarcastic.

Rebecca May | 561 comments Soph wrote: "Well. It was annoying. But he did become more serious when Lydia ran away and everything. And he did scold himself about his behaviour and how he should have done more when they realised they woul..."

Yes, it was annoying - and personally I don't find it a redeeming quality that he became more serious when his daughter ran away - if he had been a more responsible parent before that it would never have happened.

Oh, he was being sarcastic? Phew! I haven't read the book in a while, so I couldn't quite remember the context. :)

message 49: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Yeah sarcastic!

And it is bad, and at least he realises it.
