Now taking your spine-tingling recommendations for October! We'll start the polls on September 24th.

message 2: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (Orienthi) | 15 comments I have just found an awesome series called Alice in the Country of Hearts, Vol. 1. Its a bit different then what I normally read but its an interesting take on Alice in wonderland, and a romantic comedy. :)

message 3: by Kristen (last edited Sep 21, 2012 01:41PM) (new)

Kristen For manga, I'll recommend: A Bride's Story, Vol. 1
For graphic novels, I'll recommend: Ghostopolis
For Sci-fi/Fantasy, I'll recommend: Elantris

EDIT: I didn't realize when I posted this that there was a horror theme. Non of the things I suggested are scary. I still think that Ghostopolis would be a good pick for October, though.

message 4: by Mich (new)

Mich Totally loved Midnight Secretary. (available on Mangafox)If you like Vampires it's a fun/easy read.
If Gore, amazing artwork and evilness is your thing: Battle Royale is a long read, but one of the best illustrated adult graphic novels out there.

A Bride's Story sounds interesting :)

I recommend Hold Me Closer, Necromancer
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride

It's great for the spooky October months and while technically YA, it is wonderfully well-written with great characters and a really good plot. :)

Comic Books:

American Vampire, Vol. 1 by Scott Snyder and Stephen King (#1-5)
I haven't been getting into many vampire plots (Steve Niles' 30 Days of Night is the exception) as of late because they're always either overdone or over-romanticized, but I heard American Vampire is truly chilling. And to find out Stephen King is on the roster, well, it goes without saying.

The New Deadwardians by Dan Abnett
"The New Deadwardians is an eight issue comic book series by Dan Abnett with artwork by I.N.J. Culbard. The comic follows Chief Inspector George Suttle as he attempts to solve crimes in a post-Victorian England where the upper classes are composed of vampires and the lower class of zombies and humans. As Suttle tries to get to the bottom of an upper-class citizen's murder, he discovers that there's more to this murder than meets the eye." -Wikipedia

Books:
Geek Love The ORIGINAL geeks!
Sybil: The Classic True Story of a Woman Possessed by Sixteen Personalities Crazy bitches entertain me.
The Hellbound Heart I love Hellraiser, and it was based on this book so put two and two together...
House of Leaves This one interests me the most.

I haven't read these books so if you read any of them, let me know if they're any good.

As for manga, I haven't read any manga that was truly frightening and worth suggesting. Uzumaki, Vol. 1 was slightly creepy, but it would've scared me more if I was a young teen.

message 8: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (Orienthi) | 15 comments ohhhh Now I want to read The Woman in Black by Susan Hill . I cant believe I didnt think of horrors for October. I think sleep deprivation is getting the best of me! haha

message 9: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (Orienthi) | 15 comments I wanna recoommend another possible manga Is This a Zombie?, Vol. 1 by Shinichi Kimura , Because who doesn't love zombies?!

Its not a horror, but its cute :D

Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies. I can only imagine how much more brutal the manga has to be. Must check that out.

**Kay, it is not for the weak of heart. Strong sexual content and lots of gore. But truely a work of art. I have read thru the graphic novel twice and the books "agenda" does not disppoint. Also the artwork is amazing. I would say the graphic novel trumps the movie- and that is a hard thing to do.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I recomend Hellsing or Highschool of the dead. Both are manga and are pretty scary. Hellsing is actually about vampires (totally kick-butt) and High School of the Dead is about vampires. its pretty intense.

message 13: by Mich (new)

Mich yes, Battle Royal was first a novel. Published in the late 1990's by, Koushun Takami.
The Movie and graphic novel (manga) were made thereafter.
The novel is good. I think sometimes the translations are off...But if you are already a fan of this kind of writing, you are used to picking thru the translations :)
As said above, the manga in my opinion is amazing and is far superior to the novel. (what can I say, the artwork is just rad)

Ice Queen Wanderer •The Cursed Prophetess• (ari-la) | 7 comments For manga: Clover Omnibus by Clamp or Black Butler 1 by Yana Taboso.
Graphic Novel: ElfQuest
Thats it for now.

message 15: by Mich (new)

Mich Kay-American Vampire looks Amazeballs. The reviews are great on this one, adding "to read" immediately.

message 16: by Kat (new)

Kat (katsobsession) | 66 comments For novel: Stephen King's It
For graphic novel: SK's Dark Tower series

message 17: by Ashleigh (last edited Sep 20, 2012 06:55AM) (new)

Ashleigh (ashleigh_k) I second IT, it would be a great October choice in my opinion. I've only read it halfway through since picking it up a month or so ago and I think some group motivation would help me get through it. =)

message 18: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (Orienthi) | 15 comments Hey Ill join ya in on "IT". :D even if its not a "pick"

message 19: by Merissa (new)

Merissa (thegrandmasterofallthingsawesome) Tomie by, Itou Junj for Manga

message 20: by Marnee (new)

Marnee (starsandchocolate) | 16 comments Hello, I'm new, and this is not a horror recommendation, but in October, the movie, Cloud Atlas will be coming out and the movie was written and directed by Lana & Andy Wachowski who also did the film The Matrix. The book is by David Mitchell and I'm curious about what it will all look like...I read a great article about the movie and the authors were so excited about the book that it was hard not to be curious!

I read House of Leaves. It's one of those books that is such a chore that the author should come to your house with a Tshirt that says "I survived the House of Leaves" when you are done. Ditto the Historian and The Passage.

message 23: by KWinks (new)

KWinks (icameheretoread) | 60 comments Ah, too bad the group just did Joe Hill. I heart him. I was thinking of books that have scared me over the years and I loved Barker, McCammon, and The Decent by Long has stayed with me a LOOOOONG time.

True story...Not a scary October read...but definitely a light hearted, vampire romp, lol
There is a midnight butler too about Marika, but I can't find it anywhere...

I'm casting my vote for The Stuff of Legend and The Dark Tower, Volume 1: The Gunslinger Born for our comic book nominations.
