Heather | 8550 comments Well, I don't have anything to post right now but I wanted to start the September thread for those of you who have something to share. Bring it on!

Jeannie and Louis Rigod (opalbeach) I read a fiction book about art and art forgery written in 1971. It's Title was 'Tour de Force" by Philip Cleife. The book was very detailed in how forgeries are perpetuated. A legitimate Artist wants to spread his artistic wings and gets blackmailed into forging an 'original' fake Vegas. Good book.

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 1140 comments Anyone interested in participating in a group read in October?

Bernini His Life and His Rome by Franco Mormando Bernini: His Life and His Rome by Franco Mormando (2011)

Or any suggestions!

That sounds good to me. Let me know please. So, I can order it in good time. Jeannie

I love Bernini! Visiting the Ecstasy of St. Theresa is on my bucket list. I'd be up for reading about him.

Heather | 8550 comments That is a great choice, Carol. I love Bernini, too. He's one of my favorite sculptors. I will have to see if I can get my hands on the book. I'll let you know.

Dvora Treisman I'd be up for it too. Looks interesting to me.

Ed Smiley | 871 comments Yes. I'd like to read it too.

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 1140 comments Should we start reading it on October 1st?

Any mention of art theft makes me think of this Picasso adventure:

There's also a wonderful non-fiction book detailing the theft of "The Scream" from the National Gallery in Oslo: "The Rescue Artist", by Edward Dolnick.

And don't forget, ahem, a marvelous book about forging Vermeer by one of our group's own members! :)

message 15: by Ed (new)

Ed Smiley | 871 comments I did vote for the Bernini book, because I already read it. Jonathon's book is a great read though, I'd be more than happy to join in the discussion.

message 16: by Dvora (new)

Dvora Treisman I've read Jonathan's book and would read it again if it were a group read. Either books is fine with me. Why not do one in October and the other in November?

message 17: by Amalie (new)

Amalie | 157 comments Sorry, I don't think can find any of these books Heather and then the schools just started so I'll pass on this one but happy reading everybody!

message 18: by Dvora (new)

Dvora Treisman I looked at the poll but didn't vote. I don't see any reaso to add two more books to the possibilities we've been talking about, both of which seem to be pretty popular choices among the group. I would prefer we just do one of them in October and the other in November.

message 19: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments That's kind of what I was thinking, Dvora. So far it looks like a tie between the Bernini book, and the Man who Made Vermeers. There is a close third of The Rescue Artist. We might have to have a tie breaker. We'll see. I will close the poll on Friday Sept 21 so that those who would like to participate will have time to get the chosen book. Sound ok?

Ed Smiley | 871 comments When an artist puts their heart and soul into a work of art there's no telling the consequences, or what or who they will touch. President Kennedy was a great friend of the arts. Hopefully in his last night on earth, this provided some solace and pleasure for the President and First Lady.

http://artsblog.dallasnews.com/2012/0...

"In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, officials at the Dallas Museum of Art announced Wednesday an exhibition of artwork that was on display in the presidential suite of the Hotel Texas in Fort Worth the night before Kennedy came to Dallas.

President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy spent the night in Fort Worth before arriving in Dallas for the motorcade parade on Nov. 22, 1963.

Featuring paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Thomas Eakins, Lyonel Feininger, Franz Kline and Marsden Hartley and sculptures by Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore, the artwork adorned presidential Suite 850, courtesy of a small group of Fort Worth collectors.

“Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy” will debut at the DMA on May 26, 2013 and run through Sept. 15, 2013, under the title “Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy.” Organizers say they hope to “reveal for the first time the complete story of the presidential Suite 850 installation … and examine the significance of art both to the Kennedys and to the Dallas-Fort Worth communities.”

Ed Smiley | 871 comments September 26, 1791.- Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault (26 September 1791 – 26 January 1824) was a profoundly influential French artist, painter and lithographer, known for The Raft of the Medusa and other paintings. Although he died young, he became one of the pioneers of the Romantic movement.
