The captivating novel, What is the what, exposes the reader to reality of the world around them. There is no sugar coating the truth and the author clearly doesn't do that. Mr. Deng's childhood was horrible, he experienced life and death situations for many years and this is just a light version of his story. Dave Eggers novel makes people realize that around the world countries are fighting one another, people are starving and, no one is doing a thing to help.

I read What is the What awhile ago, and it still affects me, thank God. I disagree with "no one is doing a thing to help." Surely this book being written and shared - helps? And what would "help" look like? I think there are many, many people out there doing something. The crucial question: what (small, small) thing can I do?
Mary, I have pondered long and hard about our responsibilities to the suffering of poverty and war torn countries. A spiritual leader once said to me, we cannot save the world but we can start in small steps by perfecting ourselves. This may sound trite, but have a think about it. I loved this book, not because of the horror, but because it granted us a clearer understanding of the circumstances in which most of the world's people live.
AWESOME book!
I read this awhile ago, and I can still remember the character of "Dut" and when they were making that ominous cross across the river and through the forest. Thank goodness this book has something of a sense of humor.
If interested, check out the documentary that was made awhile back about the real lost boys of Sudan (if you haven't already). Valentino also had a website, but I haven't checked it since I finished the book, which, again, was awhile back.
