That's an interesting idea, Huma. I'd be wary of recommending adult books to children, but John Grisham has written some books for older children about Theodore Boone, a 13 year old boy who wants to be a lawyer.

Great review, Meghan! You'll be pleased to see that David Walliams has been shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize http://www.booktrust.org.uk/prizes-an...

Thank you for your comment Alison. I read the book when I was quite young, early high school days and you are right, I would not recommend it to really young children. But for a keen reader at that age, I would love to introduce John Grisham as an author. The ideas in the review are also just to get me into the practice of thinking of all the different ways I can use a book to educate children.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Jack and the beanstalk is an amazing fairy tale that sparks the imagination of children. I read this story to a small group of year two children and the responses I got from them were of amazement. This particular version is more appealing in my opinion as it has lift up flaps that make the whole process of story telling more interactivr; therefore engaging the children more.
If used in the classroom further ideas could be to develop creative writing and making up adventure stories using a wide variety of vocabulary.
I think that this story is suitble for children in the early years and also for children in lower key stage one.

chicken little is an amazing story that depicts the importance of not all stories having happy endings. This story picks up on the importance of being safe and not trusting too easily.I think that lower key stage one and key stage two children will relate particularly good to this story as it uses wide vocabulary aswell as holding an important message.

I think this book is amazing for early year children. It uses a wide range of vocabulary with expanding adjectives aswell as illustrating a wide range of settings. The repitition of 'stomp chomp big roars here come the dinosaurs' is especially appealing to younger children as they can actively get involved with the process of telling the story. So this would definately be a book I would read to a class in reception as it is very interactive and engaging!

I read this book to my three year old daughter, who was some what confused by the story line of the book. I found this book was very interested and was particularly fond of the way the author introduces different themes into the one story. I would say this book is suitably for children aged 7 and up. I would use this book in a classroom maybe as a guided reading activity with key stage two whereby I was able to set questions for the students to practice retrieving information from books.

I think this book is absolutely amazing for the end of the day when your key stage 1 /foundation stage class are falling asleep and you need something to wake them up. This descriptive book enables children to interact with the book and to look deeply into the narration a to follow on as we'll as predict the story. As well as being a great story book it is also has good forms of rhyming this will help introduce poetry and rhyming to younger children. I would have this book on my classroom bookshelf so that children could freely use the book to re tell the story and also to look into the pictures at greater depths.

This book is lovely to read. Great story telling book for the foundation stage nursery and reception classes. This is a good book to use with children to test their comprehension page by page and to extract their ideas of what things are going on in the pictures. The language used is very simple and easy to follow.

I think this is an absolutely great book for any early years setting. The repetition along with the simple cvc words makes this a great resource for children to practice their reading as well as following the story with a peer or adult and re telling the story using the words they know and previous knowledge of the book. I would use this book as a guided reading task for children to reception aged 5-6

These reviews are looking great. You can of course review Beware Of Boys too! I would suggest specifying whether there is a specific area of language comprehension you would focus on for guided reading using a text (e.g. sequencing, character descriptions, recognising dialogue etc).

Hello, here is a link to my review on the above book. Enjoy!

A beautifully illustrated, very funny, rhyming book. This book won the Waterstones Childrens Book Prize 2012.

Thanks Laura! Three great reviews. Please make sure that you're writing reviews rather than messages, though: Charlie and Lola won't show up in your final reviews.
