I just saw that Scottish guy, Sean Connery, at the US Open. Why can he look so good in his 80s? He could play the Major even at his advanced years. The Major's son & his girlfriend would be fun to pick too!
The Major's son and his girl friend... Reese Witherspoon for the girl friend, but I'm comming blank for the son?
Hugh Grant for son - he may be too old. Malin Ackerman or Rachel McAdams for Sandy.
Christopher Plummer for Major.
I like Hugh Grant for the son, ( he may be to old), how about Daniel Day Lewis for the Major? I'm thinkin Halle Berry for Mrs Ali, is she a stretch for this part?

I think Christopher Plummer is an excellent choice. He can pull off grumpy and charming all at the same time. Sean Connery could be a good second.
Major Pettigrew: John Cleese (I love when comedic actors play a straight man, and I think he can play the major's intolerance to others as a quirk and not snobbery)
Mrs. Ali:?
Son: Martin Freeman
Sandy: Malin Ackerman
Mrs. Ali's nephew: Kal Penn
Nephew's girlfriend: Mindy Khaling
Mrs. Ali:?
Son: Martin Freeman
Sandy: Malin Ackerman
Mrs. Ali's nephew: Kal Penn
Nephew's girlfriend: Mindy Khaling
Major Pettigrew: John CleeseMrs Ali: Julia Sawahlia (sp?)
Major Pettigrew's son: Benedict Cumberbatch
Sandy: Cameron Diaz
Mrs Ali's nephew: that guy who did The Buddha of Suburbia?
Nephew's girlfriend: ?
Ladyamelia wrote: "Ciaran Hinds as Major Pettigrew."The Major is 68, so Hinds is technically too young, but physically he would be perfect. (I think film can age you some.).
Not that I thought about this a lot.....here's who I would like to see in the movie:Major Pettigrew: Geoffrey Palmer or John Hurt
Roger: either Laurence Fox or Christopher Eccleston
Sandy: Love the idea of Reese Witherspoon. I think she really can pull off the brash and cheeky American and make it charming instead of off-putting
Marjorie: Patricia Routledge
Jemima: Emma Watson
Mrs. Ali: Lillette Dubey
Abdul Wahid: Karim Sioud
Amina: Tena Desae
Grace: Clare Holman
Alice Pierce: Celia Imrie

I am horrified by all the suggestions. Hugh Laurie is the obvious Major Pettigrew, he would only need to be aged a little. Stephen Fry is the obvious local Lord of the Manor, and Emma Thompson the local spinster. As for the rest, well, it would not matter, get unknown actor the right age.

I am late to this party, but I am just reading this and I was thinking Ian McKellen for the Major. Ciaran Hinds would be good too if aged a bit.

Oooh this! I adore Liam Neeson but he seems too young.
Ciaran Hinds for Major PettigrewEven though she's Iranian, Shohreh Aghdashloo would be perfect for Mrs. Ali

She is my choice, as well.
Alan Rickman would have been perfect for the Major. But, alas...
While I was reading, Jim Carter (Mr. Carson from Downton Abbey) stepped into Major Pettigrew's shoes! Didn't mean for it to happen, it just did!!
I can't believe no one's mentioned Jim Broadbent for the Major! He's the only person I've ever visualized when reading the book (many, many times :-) As for the others, I'm seeing Michael Sheen as Roger, even though he's almost 20 years too old for the part, Lilete Dubey as Mrs. Ali, Aysha Kala as Amina, maybe Nikesh Patel as Abdul Wahid, Fiona Glascott as Jemima, (I watch "Indian Summers, can you tell? :-), and, hmmm...Penelope Wilton for Marjorie? Gabriel Byrne for the lord of the manor? Can't think who would be Sandy...but who, oh who, will be Alice Pierce? :-) After seeing Lily Tomlin in "Grace and Frankie" she seems like a good fit!
Remember to cast for Nancy, the major's deceased wife. She is thoroughly fleshed out in affecting flashbacks.
