Hi Guys! This topic is for people new to the group, to introduce yourselves, and say why you like Deathstalker. :) My name is Becca, I've read all the Deathstalker books, listened to all the audio-books, and loved every one! :)

Dave (ddeathstalker) | 28 comments Hey! We need more people to come read this epic book series too, becca! Nice to meet you, hopefully you log back on and we can discuss this book series! :)

I'm Dave, 24, a classy sarcastic gentleman, real out going and a nice guy! I don't have too many of the audio books sadly :( I have 4, looking to get the rest for xas.

:) We do need to get more people to read the series. Nice to meet you too, glad there are other fans out there. I appreciate it's a pretty small group atm, so feel free to add any topics you like.

I only have three of the audio-books, all the paperbacks, and am saving up for the other audios. Bit of a confession though - I haven't read the very last Deathstalker, I'm reading the rest of the series through (which I've already read) and I'm up to Legacy, so I'll have read it soon. Totally looking forward to it!

Dave (ddeathstalker) | 28 comments I have all the books, the last one is good, ive reread every book @ least twice, do you know any others who are into the series?

message 5: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca May | 488 comments Mod
I've re-read/re-listened to the first three more times than I can count, and I'm on my second re-read of the others aside from Honor and Coda.

:( No, I don't know anyone else that is into the series - my brother likes the first three but won't read the others, is not as much of a fan as I am, and refuses to get GoodReads anyway. I tried to get a friend at school to listen to them with me on the bus, but she got bored within fifteen minutes. I do have one other friend who is interested in at least trying them out. Do you know any others into the series? :)

message 6: by Dave (new)

Dave (ddeathstalker) | 28 comments Ive mentioned the series to a few friends but its up to then to pick it up.

Rebecca May | 488 comments Mod
Well, I certainly hope they do, they don't know what they are missing out on! :)

message 8: by Dave (new)

Dave (ddeathstalker) | 28 comments I know, so many people dont.

I did have a teacher take down the name of the author on the last day of school - she's a really cool teacher, so she might read it. But you have to admit they are kind of rare.

message 10: by Dave (new)

Dave (ddeathstalker) | 28 comments Indeed they are.

message 11: by Danny (new)

Danny Silva | 55 comments Hey Whats going on? Becca I've read ur reviews and really enjoyed them. I mostly read mystery thrillers and fantasy, but my best friend recommended the Deathstalker series so i grabbed it on my kindle. His favorites were the last 3 and told me to get those. I read them and loved them so now im in the processes of reading the first 5. i usually like to read things in a chronological order but since the last 3 happen in a different time with different characters it has not ruined the story. Although they mention quite a bit of the story line in the Lewis series its been fun to meet the original characters and to read it all in detail. My name is Danny im 23 and live in France

Hi Danny! I'm Becca, I'm 16, and I live in New Zealand. I love to read fantasy as well! I also read historical fiction, and sci-fi, of course. :)
Welcome to the group - I can't wait to hear what you think of the first five - as they were my favorites. Feel free to start any discussion topics you like, it would be great to have this group bigger and better.
I'm glad you enjoy my reviews - when I have time I still have to write some for the last two. :)

Jaq | 281 comments Hullo

I'm 44 (ancient) and have read the books only - but they are classics to me, and am busy promoting them to all my friends. I love the mix of SF, humour and just sheer brilliance.

Am struggling to find Mistworld through the Library though....very rude of them to not have the book there for me...hahaha - maybe a trip to a second hand bookshop...???

Glad to meet you all!

Cheers
Jaq of Ballarat - Australia

Hi Jac!

Lovely to have you in the group. :) I haven't been able to find Mistworld yet either, except in a digital version - which I can link to you if you like. :)

I agree with you, the mix of humour and brilliance in these books is stunning.

Have you managed to convert anyone to the Deathstalker cause? :D I've had one so far.

message 15: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments I'm working on my brother in law....he'll give in...I'll just make sure we give him a few for Xmas...hahaha - and once my partner finishes his studies I'll make sure he reads a few....

I will have to (and it's such a chore) go second hand book shopping....

message 16: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca May | 488 comments Mod
Keep up the good work then!

Ouch. Second hand book shopping. I feel your pain.

message 17: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments They are awesome books - suggested them to the friend who lent me the entire Nightside Collection - reckon she's already into Green's writing - Deathstalker should be a natural progression....but she's currently riding across the US. So have to wait til she gets back...

message 19: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments I will keep at her...because she was the one who hooked me on the Nightside....

message 20: by Tanith (new)

Tanith | 5 comments Umm, I can't find a section to get suggestions on other books like Deathstalker. I'm looking for the humour and action!

message 21: by Chris (new)

Chris Marcus | 180 comments Another good series with humour and action would be the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. Highly recommend them!

message 22: by The Shayne-Train (new)

The Shayne-Train (shaynetrain) Hi all.

I'm Shayne. I read the Deathstalker series first a few years ago, after the Nightside series made me actively seek out everything Simon R Green.

I just re-read them all again this year. You know how sometimes you re-read something that you loved at first, but your head's in a different space now, and you're like, "Why the hell was i so into this? Gahhch!"

Yeah, that didn't happen. These books (and the afforementioned Nightside series) remain completely awesome, creative, moving, and purely enjoyable.

message 23: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments I love Green's Secret Histories too - but a similar author that mixes a little bit of action, humour and a great plot is Jasper Fforde - his series on Thursday Next is a good read too - the first one is the Eyre Affair.

Are you after space opera settings or alternate realities? (I'm also enjoying the series by Ben Aaronvitch - the Rivers of London....)

message 24: by Tanith (new)

Tanith | 5 comments It's strange, I loved Deathstalker but couldn't get into Nightshade. I also read the first 3 books of Secret histories but it fell short of my expectations.

Just wanted to add that Deathstalker Coda was awesome, everything tied up perfectly, I was blown away by who created the Maze and who the Terror was. How EPIC.

I will check out Mistborn and see how that goes.

Welcome Shayne and Tanith! Lovely to have you join the group! :)

Oh dear, it appears that even though I'm the one who created the Deathstalker group, I'm about the only one who's never read any of his other works! :D *ashamed face*

@Tanith: I totally agree about being blown away by the Maze and the Terror, but in comparison to the conclusion of the first Deathstalker series, didn't you feel the end of Coda was missing something, despite it being perfectly tied up? I know I felt that way.

@Everyone who has read them: What are the Secret Histories like/about? I want to know if they should go on my to-read shelf. :)

message 26: by Tanith (new)

Tanith | 5 comments To be honest, the end of the Deathstalker series left my jaw hanging open and I was not impressed (being a fan of HEA)
Owen gets his boots stolen and Hazel...
How is this an ending??!?? but that was because I didn't know more books where to come...

And holy hell, I expected the man in red to be the Devil. How unsuspecting!

I'm trying to convince my partner to read them but he has only read one book in his life ' the ghost of windy hill', possibly a 10 page book (in big font, with pics). Looking for the audio so I can force him on long road trips and listen to it but I doubt I'd find it.

message 27: by Carter (new)

Carter | 6 comments Audio unfortunately is terrible for deathstalker :-/ as with most older audiobooks. The only narrator/book combinations i like in audiobooks are Harry Potter, the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, the Pendergast trilogy by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, and The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch.

Really? Haha, well, I can see how you would think that about the ending if you didn't know there were more books - I did, so I was very impressed. But for a long time I thought there were only three Deathstalker books - so the end of Deathstalker War was something that I found really amazing. It was like the end of a series in itself, and for me it was epic. :)

I'm an HEA fan as well, but some books I make exceptions for - like, I would prefer a happy ending, but the ending is written so well that I excuse the content. If that makes sense? But I think I took a star off Destiny anyway, because it was just too far away from an HEA for a few specific characters.

:D The man in red - that just made me crack up laughing.

In terms of the audio - they are quite hard to find, but they're my favourite audio-books EVER. Most audio's I've listened to are single narrators making pathetic attempts to voice loads of people, both men and women. But the Deathstalker audio has four or five readers, both men and women, and awesome sound effects and music and everything. Even if it is slightly outdated, it's still the best I've ever heard. :)

message 29: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments I think the Secret Histories gets better - past the three first books - and then you're tripping over some of the other characters who litter the worlds of Green.

Becca - they're about the Drood family and to what lengths the Droods go to in their never ending quest to rule - I mean protect the worlds as we know them. (There is an overarching mystery of what happened to the parents of the main characters, etc etc...I preferred the Nightside though because they were quicker to read through and I loved where Green took John Taylor (quicker to read is good when you're not getting a lot of sleep....)). If it was a choice I'd say read the first one and see how it fits...I've had books that people have raved about, and then read the first one and gone - doesn't fit, don't like, and I'm not going to read anymore....

Oh and the Kingkiller chronicles - have humour in them too - with action....and there is urban fantasy of the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher (American Humour and lots of action). Did anyone see the television adaption of it???? I was like the actor they got is so short - when Harry is meant to be so tall - just like the Jack Reacher novels and movie......sorry completely distracted now....

Tanith | 5 comments ...on the note of Jaq's distraction, I really enjoyed seriesThe Breach series. Not even sure if this is even considered Sci Fi through.

message 31: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments I've marked it down as a to be read...thanks Tanith....I also have enjoyed the Scarecrow books by Mathew Reilly - bit of humour and lots of action....

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Marcus | 180 comments Jaq: I loved Reillys books especially with the scarecrow. Great action.

message 33: by Jaq (new)

Jaq | 281 comments I am a sucker for the Scarecrow series Chris, the humour and the action - Reilly really does tell a cracker of a story.....
