This book is about the impact of leaders on the performance of followers. Unlike books that only delve into the romance of leadership Wiseman shows that leaders can have a negative impact as well. organisations can flounder as those who focus on authority per se rule the roost so that instead of contributing they only contribute to diminishing the capabilities of their subordinates. Any thoughts on this phenomenon? Has anyone seen multipliers or diminishers in their organisations?

I've seen both Multipliers and Diminishers in organizations I've worked in and classes I've taken. I just saw The Internship, a comedic movie about people engaged in a competitive internship at Google, and we can see examples of Multipliers and Diminishers throughout the movie.
The idea of multipliers and diminishers is a powerful concept often overlooked by those in leadership, as well as members of the team. A leader that multiplies brings value to his/her team by adding value to the individual team members. This can be done through coaching and communicating a strong belief in the abilities of the members of his/her team. By strong belief, I am not referring to blind optimism, but instead a visionary expectation of what can be achieved. These team members will not only be motivated to meet the leaders high expectations without fear, but will also look for ways to raise the performance bar in the future. In the case of a diminisher, the leader either directly or indirectly communicates to the team doubt and disbelief in the team's ability. The diminishing leader spends a lot of time focusing on the weaknesses of the team, and blames the team members for the leaders poor performance. In the end, the team walks on pins and needles trying not to arouse the ire of the boss.
After working for a variety of bosses I have worked for both types. The diminsisher that you are describing here is what I call a Bosshole. A bosshole is that boss who sucks the life energy and enthusiasm out of his team. Definitely difficult to work for one of those people.I would be interested if my boss rating tool works for you,Thanks for signing up for my book giveaway for The Bosshole Effect.
