Graceling Academy discussion

Mixed gender. Probably not the greatest idea ever

Jason moved into the dorms and looked around, smirking seeing there was little partition between the girls and the boys' beds. He dropped his bags on the nearest cot to the door and sat down, observing the academy through the window.

Dez bustled through the door leading into the dorm room and instantly stopped when she realised that it would be mixed gender.I wasnt told that She thought, somewhat hurridly. She eyed up the other 2 people in the room before slowly making her way to one of the beds, throwing her stuff on the cot carelessly.

Jason noticed the girls and scanned over them quickly. He smirked as he leaned back against the wall and decided whether to greet them.

Dez perched herself on the bed stiffly, clearly uncomfortable about the fact that she would be sharing with the opposit gender. She brushed her purple hair out of her eyes and pulled her mobile out from her back pocket, quickly texting her adpotive mother about the dorm arrangments. Knowing her mum, she would probably say it was a good thing and just the thought caused Dez to roll her eyes.

Jason looked at the girl with the purple hair interestingly. "Hi there." he says, waving.

Dez looked up, bright blue eyes showing her clear nervousness.
"H-hi" She stuttered. Great way to make a good impression, she thought to herself, rolling her eyes inwardly at her awkwardness.

"I'm Jason by the way. You?" he noticed her nervousness and he began to feel it too.

"Desert Rose." She hated it. Hated her name and the clunkiness and unusualness of it. And on top of that she had discovered it was actually the name of some band a few years back.

"Desert Rose. Got a nickname?" he sat forwards, more interested in her now.

"Dez." She said with a nod.
"I never go by Desert or Desert Rose, both are embaressing and one is to long anyway." SHe said with a shrug, beginning to get accustomed to talking to him. She was still radiating uneasiness, but it was slowly beginning to lessen.

"Cool. That's cool." he nodded, grinning. "Nervous about starting school? It's just...kinda obvious."

"Im more nervous about the prospect of sharing a room with a load of boys." She admitted before blushing slightly.

"It's...okay. You'll find we're not that bad. So far, it looks like I'm the one who's out numbered." he tried to lighten her mood with his joke.

She grinned slightly.
"I feel more sorry for the boys having to share with the girls." She said with a slight laugh.

"So I'm assuming you don't have a brother of sorts?" he shrugged, inquiring about her family.

"I wouldnt know, im adopted." SHe said with a ghost of a smile.
"I've taken a wild guess and decided my family most have been a group of hippies. I can remember my biological mother, picking me up when i scraped my knee, but thats about it. I went into foster care at the age of 5."
She said with a small shrug.

"I live with my Aunt and Uncle. I don't know anything about my parents either. Apparently they were unfit teenaged parents." he admitted, getting quieter and quieter with every word.

"At least you had somebody caring for you..." She shrugged quietly, trailing off and absentmindedly beginning to trace the self harm scars that marred the inside of her forearms.

"Oh...sorry." he followed her fingers and ignored asking her a question. It's never polite to ask about such things. "Are you excited for school? I mean, subjects?" he was getting nervous now.

"Yea sure." She said, her face brightening up again.
"My mum was real excited about me coming here. I really want to do her proud y'know? She has done so much for me, I just want to repay her." She said with a slight smile.

Kinky walked in, and immediately noticed a boy and a girl. "Am I in the right room?" She asked, a confused look on her face. She thought maybe those two were hiding in here to do some "business" or something..... private. She shrugged anyway, and sat down on the cot next to the girl. 'So.... uh, where do I change?" She said, awkwardly. She needed to though, she had super bad smelling clothes on, from the last Foster home.

"Exactly. I know exactly how you feel." he agreed one hundred percent. They owed so much for those who had taken them in and it was only right to do them proud here. Then, Kinky entered the room and talked to them. "Oh yeah. This is the right dorm. Mixed I'm afraid." he shrugged. As for the second question, he pointed down the hall. "Girl's bathroom is down there I think."

Dez smiled slightly. Nodding.
"If It wasnt for my mum, I wouldnt be the person I am today. I would hate to think where i would be at now, without her."
Sadness flashed through her eyes as the memories came flooding back to her, but she brushed this off quickly and studied him with her electric blue eyes.

"No one would." he agreed, smiling at her with his simple but genuine beam. "So do you want to check the place out? I've only seen it off the pamphlets." he said sheepishly.

"Sure, me and my mum looked it up on the interent, looks quite fancy." She said with a slight smirk. She stood up, now noticablly shorter than most her age, and grabbed her stachel, pulling it over one shoulder.

Jason stood up quickly and gracefully (it came with being a monster), his hair tousling as he did. "Great! Let's then. You can choose first."

"Ok. Hmmm..." She thought for a moment, reaching into her bag and taking out the leaflet, flicking through it, eyes gazing down at the page before she nodded.
"Wanna go to the lake? or we could go to the pool, Ive brought my swim stuff. Sorry just thinking of stuff we could do." She said shiftily, rocking back at fourth on her heels.

"It's alright. We can head over to the lake first. I like how much nature surrounds this school. Sick of the concrete jungle." he said as he moved to the exit, waiting for her to come.

Dez nodded. Following him whilst talking.
"I can remember, when i was really young and still living with my biological parents, i think we must have lived on the outskirts of a forest, or something similar. I just have this one flash of memory of the trees towering over, I really want to draw a picture of it, but thing is is that i am absoloutly rubbish when it comes to anything creative."
She said with a slight smile.

"I can understand. When I first explained the concept of being a 'monster' to my parents, they thought I was an expert at everything. Pushed me at academics, arts, music, sports...turns out the only thing I could really do is make people emotional." he shrugged, his smile faltering a bit but regaining it's full force at the end of his sentence.

Dez grinned.
"I dont really know what I do well, my mother told me i was good at sports, and some other people advised that i was good at making people happy. But i guess i dont really mind, as long as everybody else is ok, then im ok." She said with a short shrug.
"When i told my mum i was a 'monster' she just said she always knew there was something special about me." She said with a grin.

"Well I guess if you're unnaturally beautiful like all monsters are like, and have the ability to make people weep or angry just with your sight, I'm sure you can be called special." he said flatly.

She rolled her eyes.
"It doesnt really bother me to be honest." She said with a slight shrug of her shoulders, before smiling again.
"Now come on otherwise we will never get to the lake."

Kinky had chenged into an old Monsters Ink t-shirt, because it seemed appropriate. She didn't have many good clothes at the moment, because all her foster home caretakers were cheapos. The nice people that had verified her as a monster had promised to give her some better clothes soon.
