Money was a big driver, the challenge of finishing and accomplishing such a work that had not been done of that magnitude. I don't think he realized what was really involved to get this done, but when he got started and realized the he only had a short amount of time due to daylight, and the amount of time he put into the painting at night and during times the "models" couldn't be there. I thought it was smart that he could work with a couple, then sketch in what he wanted to do next, and work on his colors which was such an integral part of the painting. I think it is an absolutely beautiful and fine piece of art.
He must have been ready for it, because he pulled it off, but I think Vreeland pretty successfully conveys the magnitude and coordination such a painting would entail--something I had never thought of before.
