3. Describe what you think was going through Renoir’s mind as he took on this huge technical challenge of this painting. When you think about the overwhelming challenge of the painting, was he ready for this? Things like perspective, positioning of the figures, the water in the river, etc.

Money was a big driver, the challenge of finishing and accomplishing such a work that had not been done of that magnitude. I don't think he realized what was really involved to get this done, but when he got started and realized the he only had a short amount of time due to daylight, and the amount of time he put into the painting at night and during times the "models" couldn't be there. I thought it was smart that he could work with a couple, then sketch in what he wanted to do next, and work on his colors which was such an integral part of the painting. I think it is an absolutely beautiful and fine piece of art.

He must have been ready for it, because he pulled it off, but I think Vreeland pretty successfully conveys the magnitude and coordination such a painting would entail--something I had never thought of before.
