This is one of favourite chapters so far. Not only was Simon Callow's narration wonderful, but I loved the way in which the story of Jonah and the Whale was re-told.
Kim, I'm with you on this. I love the biblical story of Jonah and the Whale, one of my favorite readings in the bible is the prayer of deliverance given by Jonah and found in chapter two of the Book of Jonah. This was a great retelling and this chapter remains one of my top Moby Dick chapter favorites so far.
So today is my "catch up day" since I'm off work. I'm trying to get current and I started with this chapter. I really enjoyed it! I started listening and reading along while I was on the subway and the world around me just disappeared. Simon Callow did a wonderful job of narrating! I felt like I actually was in church. Seeing as it is Sunday, that was quite appropriate.
Here's a link that talks about the psalm Melville quotes and about the Watts hymnal.

I caught a show the other day where Father Barron, a priest who makes a lot of movie and book references and is found on the Internet, spoke about the story of Jonah and that he found Melville's commentary in this chapter to be one of the best he's read of Jonah. I remember thinking the same thing when I read the chapter.
I know I am late to the party, but everything I still here, so I am reviving this conversation. Moby Dick has been on my reading list since I first read my brother's children's version as a child. Another favorite of mine were children's bible stories. This chapter has renewed my interest in reading the bible. What grand stories! An amazing take on the connection between Jonah as a man of his time correlated with the livelihoods of the men of New Bedford. (I've got to find out what Jonah was running from! That comes later...Moby Dick is my early Winter read...)
