Hi Vikk, thanks for setting up this group. I've been enjoying the Big Read, but was really needing someone to talk to.
this is a first time read for me too.
this is a first time read for me too.
Just saw this in my update feed. What a great idea for a group! I sort of read MD when I was at university thirty-five years ago. Only sort of, because I was very ill during the relevant part of the semester and skimmed the last half of the book. I got through an exam paper by relying on a friend's lecture notes. I figured it was time to tackle it again properly and listening rather than reading is the only way I think I can do it.
Thanks for the invitation, Hayes - I'm looking forward to this. I admit, most of my knowledge of MD up till now has come from Star Trek, so I'm very happy about the Big Read - but I'm behind! I'll catch up ASAP.
Hi Tracey. And Kim, I thought I had clicked your name when I sent the invitations...oops
I'm glad you both joined the group.

Wow, look at all these messages. :) What a treat to return to the computer and find all of you. This is exciting. So we have Hayes (thanks for the idea...), Laura, Kim, Tracey and Chelsea.
Thanks for joining!

Heavens, no. I'm glad you did. This is an open group and very informal. :)

:O)
Hi all! This is the first time I'm reading Moby Dick. I'm kind of excited about this idea. I'm just joining today and I'm thinking "Yikes, I'm 18 chapters behind already!". Hopefully I'll catch up this week. :-) And thank you to Hayes for the invitation!
Hey Kali, nice to see you here. Don't worry about keeping up. Each chapter has its own thread (good idea Vikk, but so much work!) so you can read through them at your own speed.
Great painting, Laura! The light seems to pass right through that wave. Who is the artist?
Hi Chelsea and Bettie *more waving*

It's great to see friends here (*waves to Laura, Tracey and Hayes*) and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone else!
Hi Kali, Welcome. Don't worry. The chapters are pretty short so you'll catch up in no time. Also, the way this is set up you'll still be able to participate in the discussions even as you play catch-up. In fact, I have to go in and layer my responses to the chapters I've read so far as we just set up this discussion group yesterday. The chapters have turned out to be pretty interesting and they seem to make you want to comment or talk to someone about them. :)
"waves" to Kim. :)

Thanks Vikk! I am already loving this idea and the book. I'm on Chapter 3. I think I will definitely be caught up in no time. :-)
I loved chapter 3 and the description of the "boggy soggy squitchy picture".

YES! What great language!

Hi Mona. I was really frightened of reading MD too, but the chapter a day is so doable. Most of the chapters are really short too. Chapter 3 is one of my favorites, so you have something good coming up.
Hi Mona, Welcome. So glad to have you join us. So far I've really enjoyed most of the narrators and I have to say the one-chapter-a-day pace is a great way to read this. Be sure and post any thoughts you want to share in the chapter topic discussion threads.

I'm Vikk and I'm the one who started the group. I've never read Moby-Dick or Melville so I'm ready to learn more. How about you?
