Shade explored his territory. His black fur blending with the twilight shadows, his yellow-amber eyes searched the ravine. He lifted his head and scented the air. He was close.
Shade continued to search. At last, he found it: his den. Smiling, he poked his head inside. "Starlight. Starlight, come on. It's almost time for the Howl."
A silvery white wolf, about two in her years, opened her yellow eyes. She smiled when she saw her father. A yawn took over and she stretched her small body. "Great! It's nice to get out of the den."
Shade looked at the floor. He didn't like keeping Starlight cooped in the den, but he knew, as well as her, that she would never survive on her own. Shade's mate had tried to kill her and her brother. She had disowned Shade and left the pups for dead. Devastated, Shade left the Pack, taking his dead kin with him.
Later, he had dug two holes for the dead pups. He placed the small male, Song, into the forst hole. He covered the hole then turned to bury Starlight. But something was different about this pup. He nosed Starlight, sniffing. She let out a cry of pain. She was alive! Ever since he rescued Starlight, Shade had cared for the pup. And ever since, Starlight had lost almost full use of the leg. She could walk, but running and jumping were no options. Shade disliked bringing her outside in case of danger, but he didn't like her staying inside either.
Shade blinked at Starlight and turned out of the den to wait for his daughter to emerge. She slowly padded from the den, limping slightly. She stubbled: Shade rushed to help her. "Dad, I'm fine. Really."
He eyed her, blinked, and led Starlight through the ravine with his tail.
The climb was a rough one, but after almost an hour, Shade got Starlight to the top. The two wolves went to the edge of the cliff and sat down, watching the sun disappear. Finally, the moon was high. Shade turned to Starlight and smiled. She returned the smile and a deep breath. Shade did also but pushed the air out of his body in howl. His black muzzle lifted to the sky and his mouth in a tight "o", Shade closed his eyes and howled loud, clear, and bright. Starlight copied his movements and added her song to his. The song rose and fell as the stars shined bright. Other wolves joined the howl and soon , the air was filled with the vibrations of wolf song:

May you sleep in peace tonight
May your den keep you warm
May Luna's moon and Rannoch's stars shine bright
Until you wake with morn

May Nora's wind carry your paws
May your song fill the sky
May your prey fall in your jaws
Let your spirit never die

May your family be strong
May your day be bright
May you right your wrong
Let Narvog's sun shine bright

May you sleep in peace tonight
May your den keep you warm
May Luna's moon and Rannoch's stars shine bright
Until you wake with morn

All at the same time, the voices ceased. The night was silent. Not a sound. Shade turned to Starlight and licked her ears.
She closed her eyes as her father's tongue wet her ears. The two stared eachother in the eyes for a moment, until Shade said, "Let us return to the den. We take the long way."
Starlight's mood sank a bit. The long way. This would include going all the way to the edge of the valley and turning around towards the ravine entrance. Then there were sharp rocks to step on and boulders to trip over. She sighed. "Alright. Let's go hime."
Shade led the way to the valley bordering a wolf pack's territory. These wolves lived in the swamp. It's quite an unfortunate place to live, he always told Starlight. He never knew how their lives were, just that he'd hate living in a swamp. He was from DesertPack, so he knew only how desert wolves lived. He almost missed pack ife...
The black wolf continued to lead his daughter. Suddenly she stopped. Shade turned around, panic in his eyes. "Starlight?" he asked with concern.
The silvery white she-wolf scuffled her paws as she said, "I need to take a break. My paw hurts."
Shade nodded and sat down next to Starlight.
