Chris-james Melchizedek | 1 comments This is one of the most awesome imagined worlds I have come across. I dearly hope he writes more stuff set in Bas-Lag

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments I'll post some more later, but in the meantime, please contribute anything interesting about the Bas-lag world that you may encounter.

Mosca I have an academic question.

Are books listed as part of the "New Crobuzon" Series identical to books listed as "Bas-Lag" Series? Or is one Series the subset of the other?

New Crobuzon is a city-state set in the Bas-lag universe, so theoretically, New Crobuzon is part of Bas-lag. :)

message 6: by Mosca (new)

Mosca Thank you, Traveller. :)

I assume that you are right. Much of Goodreads alternately lists Perdido Street Station as part of a "New Crobuzon Series" or as part of a "Bas-Lag Series". Maybe some years ago a "New Crobuzon Series" was thought to be sufficient to include CM's books of this world. And more recently, readers (and publishers?) have renamed the series "Bas-Lag" as more accurate?

Just guessing. I've only read PSS of this series.

Hmm. Although New Crobuzon is mentioned The Scar, most of the novel is not directly set in New Crobuzon, but in it's environs.

Iron Council returns back to New Crobuzon, so really, i suspect it's much of a muchness, whether you call the series New Crobuzon or Bas-lag.

A bit like calling something either the United Kingdom series or the Britain series. :D

Magdelanye | 174 comments wow Trav thanks.

message 15: by Saski (new)

Saski (sissah) | 267 comments Not remarked (until now) but definitely thought it.

Magdelanye | 174 comments This is Magdelanye,green.
I thought I was through with wanting to own things!
Tell us, when you wear it,is perdido street station superimposed over your heart? Does it bleed when you wash it? Or have you had it framed? Can you scan it and post it for us??

Sorry if I am being impertinent,I don't even know you. Can I blame it on the mood I'm in,deep in Bas Lag.

Have been poring over the map of NC,all the places I am reading about now.

Am I just a greedy pig that I want to see the whole world.I supposed any map would have to be 3 D but a t shirt is so perfect.

the cacotopic stain for heavens sake. How did the Iron Council navigate that?

Ooh, wow! You put us all in the shade with your uber Mieville-nerdiness! I'm green too!

Mags, I'm even green that you currently have the time to read IC! Just because of you, I'm going to make and effort to start on it this weekend...

message 20: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye | 174 comments Hey Traveller, that is not fair, it's CM you have to blame!
and after the first few hundred pages you will begin to be glad....
I am on the slowdown make it last a bit longer stage

message 21: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Sheesh, this has been an exceptionally busy week for me, so sorry that I've not mentioned reading IC out there on the reading schedule yet, but I won't even have time to start it today either... maybe by tomorrow. I'll broach the subject on the reading schedule either later today or tomorrow. Just hang in there, Mags, we'll hopefully be joining you soon!

message 22: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye | 174 comments hey, please, don't stress on it...I am actually, when I remember, a grown up,and I have finished the book all by myself. It will be nice to hear from others and you especially what people think.

As I went over the book to begin some kind of review, I wondered at my extreme reaction to some of the disturbing monsters he introduces especially in the beginning of this book(actually some we have met already but it doesnt make them any sweeter)
I will be working on my review over the next few days-have to return it in a couple.

message 23: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Okay, I've finally done a post in the hope someone will respond. http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

I could send a group message as well. I feel bad that I hadn't earlier, because people usually like to have time to plan their next read. Maybe there'll be someone around who was wondering what to read next. :P

Anyway, I am finally ready to start on it....but more people coming along would be nice!

message 24: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye | 174 comments well done.
a few keen people are actually more interesting than a lot of indifferent ones....not that this group actually would have any of those. One cannot read CM and remain indifferent.

Now that I have finished and liked the book,it will be interesting to go over the beginning and see why it provoked such a challange for me.

I can't wait to see what you think|
