..as you can see, the main characters start to irritate me greatly. It's like the characters don't grow, mature, or something. Not sure what it is...

Scarpetta became more weak. So worried about what she was thought of and could not seem to stand up for herself. So many times I kept thinking, "Say something!!" Then for Cornwell to have Marino turn into such a sleaze and bad guy. How dare she? She already made him into a ugly, unattractive slob; but great protector and detective-partner with Scarpetta. I felt betrayed....

it is. i just happened to pick this book up from one of the newer UBSs i go to. so many had talked about it, so i got it. i had no intention of reading it this year; but i wanted some excitement for the end of the year. so far... i got it!

I love Christopher Pike! What have you read of his, Janie? I read the first 4 books in the Thirst series and have bindups of Final Friends and Weekend and Slumber Party. I also have books 5 and 6 of the Thirst series.

He isn't very well known, so that probably explains why you haven't heard of him until now. Up until 4 or 5 years ago, I hadn't heard of him, either. If you're interested, I suggest trying Plowing The Dark. That's where I started, and once I'd finished, I had to read more of his stuff.

I love the fact that his writing style and stories in general are unlike anything I've ever read. His novels are often dense, and very intellectually driven. His characters are quite amazing, as well. Richard Powers is utterly brilliant, IMO!

I really enjoy John Saul's books, Lee. Have you read The Blackstone Chronicles?

I don't really care for John Saul...

I used to like Saul when I was a teen. I hadn't read him in ages till a year or so ago I read The Unloved. I was really disappointed! I thought it was such an overused idea, very cliche. I'm hoping that was just a fluke. :(

Admittedly, I haven't read a whole lot of Saul's stuff, but I tried reading one featuring Hellfire, The Unwanted, and Sleepwalkers, and they all sound like the same basic concepts. Plus I don't think he's a very good writer.
There was one, however, that I can't remember the name of that started off slow but eventually turned out pretty good. It impressed me a lot.

Saul wasn't too bad. Not at all. But like others have basically said, he leaves a lot to be desired. There's a fair amount of authors that are better than him. At this point I'll pick him up if I don't have much else in the queue but I've got so many other things I want to read that I usually don't bother with him at this point.

he is not great, but he is a nice filler when needing a good read.

No Holly I haven't read Blackstone Chronicles yet, it is on my to read list. John Saul was my first horror author. I was in the 4th grade when I read Brainchild, then I found The God Project and Suffer The Children. I was hooked from there I graduated to King and read IT, I was an official horror junkie at that point. LOL
