Hi Christine! In my experience John Saul usually writes horror books that involve children/teens.

John Irving-A Prayer for Owen Meany

Recommend:

Cormac McCarthy - start with No Country for Old Men.. can you say violence

The Book Thief.. 5 stars and 2 hankies

It.. reminds you of your childhood and all the closet monsters..

'Salem's Lot.. i like vamps that don't sparkle

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, can be hard at times; but such a wonderful place to let your imagination run free.

Harry Potter Boxset, regardless of the hype; this was a great series.

message 12: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) @Alondra - Great recommendations! The only one that I didn't read yet was No Country For Old Men. And in my opinion, anything by Uncle Stevie is great! :)

@Tal - I agree, Room by Emma Donoghue was a really great book! I didn't think I would like it because of the subject matter, but I couldn't put it down!

Yes, she does! of course, if you have seen the movie, then you may not need to. the movie was excellent and they really followed the book closely. now that is not to say that there aren't a few more nuggets of info in the book... just sayin' that you wouldn't miss to much if had only seen the movie

**read it anyway...

Michelle | 60 comments Robert McCammon is always good for historical fiction and Mine is a good horror book from him.McCammon's Swan Song is very similar to Stephen King's The Stand but I found it a quicker read. Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door is perfect for a creepy, disturbing ... no VERY disturbing look at the kinds of things human's are capable of doing to each other.

message 23: by Janie (new)

Janie Johnson I love Robert McCammon! Swan Song is my favorite!

message 24: by Char (new)

Char I love McCammon as well. Boy's Life is my absolute favorite, but I also loved Swan Song, The Wolf's Hour
(a werewolf spy in WWI, it was awesome!), and The Hunter from the Woods. Not to mention the entire Matthew Corbett series. : )

Charlene I happen to have Boy's Life and The Wolf's hour. I also just bought Mine too. Looking forward to all of them. The reread of Swan's Song was incredible. I got so much more from it this time around.

I've read Swan Song a few times and I couldn't agree with you more. I remember reading "Mine" as a teen and I remember that it rocked my world at the time and locked me in as a lifelong fan of McCammon.
I just know that you will LOVE Boy's Life. : )

Char Janie wrote: "Thanks guys, I will bump it up on my TBR pile. McCammon is excellant for sure!"

Kyle, it is, isn't it? This is my favorite quote from the book:
"We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God's sake. And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they'd allowed to wither in themselves."

*contented sigh*

Hi, Kathy!

Like everyone else has said, McCammon's a fantastic writer. One of my favorites, actually. As for where to start, Boy's Life would be a great start. I, however, took the ultimate plunge (so to speak) and started with Swan Song. It is often compared to The Stand, yes.
