Monica | 14 comments The role that I think has been most influential in Arnold's life is him being a cartoonist. In the book, The absolutely true diary of a part-time indian, the main character, Arnold, talks about the reasons why being a cartoonist is important to life. If he hasn't chosen the role of becoming a cartoonist in the first place, he wouldn't find his "place" in life. An cartoonist describes Arnold. Drawing things that describe himself help others see exactly what kind of person he is. Besides his lopsided eyes, big hands and feet, too much teeth, and a stutter and a lisp problem, Arnold is actually a very normal person. He's just bullied a lot at school because of sterotyping. Drawing his life out actually makes lots of people a better person, especially him.

The role that is most influential in my life is being a sister. Actually its a very negative impact in my life at home. Being an older sister for a 5 year old is not easy. Every time I come home from school, my brother, Kevin, screams so loudly I feel like as if my ears are going to drop out of my head. In addition, he is very annoying. After I get out of school, I always march straight to my room and start on my homework. My brother comes into my room and scribbles all over my homework with pen! I have to redo my homework all over again. This happenes at least once every single day. Kevin is also loud. Sometimes when I am about to go to sleep, he pops up at the last moment to drink some milk. And when he drinks milk, he makes these weird noises, and once you heard them, you can never forget them ever again. Imagine having him as a little brother, he would be rated as the most annoying kid I've ever seen in my whole life! No one can be more annoying than him!

Matthew | 11 comments I think the role that has been most influential in Arnold's life is being an artist/cartoonist. He draws things that help him express the way he feels. He draws these cartons to show how he feels when he gets bullied. He also draws because he thinks pictures mean more than words.

The role that is most influential being an uncle. My older sister recently had a baby and it make me happy to have a newphew. When he comes to visit I help my mom take care of him and that makes me feel responsible. I can't wait for him to get older so I can help him with sports and life.

Kailey | 7 comments The role that influenced Arnold's life is the born into being a kid with brain damange. I believe this because Arnold is always supporting the stereotypes. He says that they have seizers daily and they have big hands and feet.Arnold also decribes himself wit a lisp and stutter problem, lopsided eyes and forty-two teeth. Arnold knows that he is different and he doesn't deny it.

The role that most influenced me in my life was my sister.Like Monica it is hard to take care of a toddler. They run all over the place because they have no clue of their surrondings. My baby sister LeiLani influenced me to be more responsible. She has influnced me to not take things for granted. And these things i dont regret.

Mark Markola | 5 comments In the book, The absolute true diary of a part time- Indian, Arnold’s influential role in his life is his brain damage. His brain damage really affects him in a negative way because it left him disfigured. His head bigger than a normal human, he has huge arms and feet, he is so skinny, his eyes are lopsided and he has a speech impediment. He gets bullied and beat up at school because of the way he looks, and that really sends a negative impact on him and it bothers him. Arnold has a hard life in school and outdoors. The only way he escapes it is by drawing. The only reason why Arnold draws is because he is Indian and he can’t get a decent job also because his appearance is not good for other people and people will think he is dumb and not hire him, so he thinks that drawing and being an artist is his one way ticket to money and freedom. Arnold’s role has a negative impact on his outside life because it is hard for him to deal with his brain damage and him getting bullied all of the time.
A role that I was born into and is influential in my life is being Albanian. My family expresses the Albanian culture and believes in the old traditions of arranged marriage. This is a role I struggle to understand being born in America where you have the freedom to fall in love and marry who you want. I understand where my family comes from but hope they do not expect me to follow in their footsteps. I believe in culture as it influences who you are and I respect who my family is and the values they have given my brother and I. On the other hand, I am against marrying an Albanian girl who my parents may think is right for me based on family background. Although I’m too young to even think about marriage, I still can’t understand how people could marry someone they may not know or love. Times have changed since my parent’s time and both my parents are open to change. They are more lenient than my grandparents who still seem to struggle to understand the American life style.

Melanie M. (MissMello) | 6 comments The role that I think has been most influential in Arnold's life is him being a cartoonist. By doing art of cartoons and stuff Arnold had done would kind of express his feelings and so that if he doesn't feel like nobody would listen to him and if he needed to talk to someone and that he wouldn't feel comfortable he could just sketch some things or do a comic as he did for us to look at in the book.(The absolutely true diary of a part-time indian.) I believe that he (Arnold) has been influenced by other things also but then again he has chosen to let people pick on him; if he didn't like people calling him big head and stuff he would of stood up for him self but he chooses not to. (I wonder why)

A role that i was born into was being Puerto rican and trinidadian. People would say Trinidadian people are poor and would wear not expensive clothes like other people would wear and people would also say that trinidadian people are messy so there house would be a wreck like a whole war happened in your house. People would say that Puerto ricans are loud and crazy and hard to control at times meanwhile some of those Stereotypes are true but some are not and i realized that i have been also making stereotypes about other people. I'm glad we had this discussion in class

Justin Yu | 10 comments In the book, I think the role that affected Arnold's life is the fact that he is an Indian. Since he is an Indian, there are many links and stereotypes to his life. This topic is the main and general idea of what Arnold is like and people can probably figure out that he might not be like the others around him. He is different when it comes to the outside, texture details and his appearance but on the inside he is someone screaming for help but cannot be reached in a way. That is the biggest problem and instead of writing and speaking in words he draws out the situation and I think that is really creative.
A role that i was born into and really affects my life is being Asian. As well suspected, every Asian parent or guardian are expected high grades of their kids. But i disagree because not everyone is bright and not perfect including me when I do dumb things. But that doesn't change the fact that we are human. We have flaws in our lives but every Asian parent expect straight A's but some may have difficulty learning. The fact that a lot of people ask us Asians for help makes me think that we are the smartest of people. But some aren't This is one big stereotype.

Steven Lin | 8 comments I think the role that has been most influential in Arnold's life is being poor. If he was not poor he would have been able to save his best friends life(dog). He was really sad that he was not only unable to save but also unable to get a job that will earn enough money to save his dog. He knows that he has to end his life because the dog was suffering too much. He knows that his dog, knows what was going to happen and that made him happy but still he ran a way during the shooting o his dog.
A role that I was born into and is influential in my life is being a little brother. I was expected to be as smart as my brother. I had to do may things to help out the family because i was the smallest one. I was also not trusted as much as my brother because they think that since that i am younger i will be less trust worthy. I am able to do what my brother dose or where he goes because i am younger than him.

Elva C. | 13 comments I think that the role that influenced Arnold a lot in the book, The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian, is his looks. For example, in the book, his looks really affected him because his head is huge and people would bully him buy calling him globe, or orbit. And they would spin him around and say "I wanna go here," pointing to a spot on his head. He doesn't have a lot of friends because he gets bullied a lot. He was in this club called, Black eyed of the month club, which is where people bully him. Arnold gets seizures about twice a week, and studders and lisps a lot. Only when you're young, people think that it is cute, but when Arnold is 14, people think of him as a retard. It is very mean and a bad impact on him. Another example is his eyes. Arnold's eyes are so bad, he has to wear these really big and ugly glasses. People would call him a grandpa. Finally, another example is, in the book, Arnold is very skinny and his feet were really big, people thought that he was just a upper case L.

A role that is most influential in my life is being an Asian. Throughout my life, I have heard these very ridiculous and untrue stereotypes about Asians. One example is, on the internet, I have seen pictures of Asians, with the caption, "find the one with his eyes open." In the picture, you can clearly see that everyone's eyes are opened. I felt angry at those people who made it because the picture was suppose to mean that Asians have chinky eyes. Not all Asians have chinky eyes! Another example is that people just assume that ALL Asians eat dogs. Last year, when I was going to classes, random people come up to me and ask, "Yo, is it true that you eat dogs?" Then they would say that SOME Asians eat dogs. SOMEEE not ALL!!! I was very mad because they would just assume that all Asians eat dogs

Kimora Irby | 5 comments I think the Role that influnced Arnold is he's diary because it helps him get down what he wasn't to get out but can't so he feels the need to write it down on paper. All the mean stuff the bullys would say to him like they would put his head in the toilet and make fun of the way he looks and call him slow.I think he's diary express how he feels inside.

A role that is most influential in my life is being black and korean when people see that my hair is really long and that asks me what my background is and i tell them Korean they get shocked and say to"oh why your hair is so long i never seen a black person with long nautral hair before.

The most influential role in Arnold’s life is being a Native American. Being a Native American has changed Arnold’s life and also that he is poor, it makes big changes to his life that will also cause him to have trouble in the future. Since Arnold happens to be part of a tribe, the bad thing is that his tribe is poor and does not care about things that Arnold cares about like education. One example is that how Arnold’s tribe is so poor that they still have books in school that Arnold’s mom used to use. The book has been so old that it only teaches old math back in the days and not the next generation of math. Arnold had been mad that also how no one happened to complain about the books. It seemed to Arnold that no one in his tribe cared about education. Another example is how his tribe was so poor for dentists and eye doctors. That is why the doctors only come to the tribe area once a year to get a check-up. Once Arnold was born with 42 teeth which are 10 more than a normal person, he needed 10 teeth pulled. Since the dentists only come once a year, Arnold had to get 10 teeth pulled a time with less novacaine.
Since dentists thought that Native Americans have less pain, they only put half the novacaine.
Arnold was disappointed at how other people from the world thought about Indians and how the tribe didn’t even care much about their own lives of health and education.

One role that influences me a lot is being Asian. Tons of people have stereotypes on Asians that affect me in a bad way. Most people think that Asians always have good grades and school and are bad at everything else other than that like weak in sports. Not all Asians have good grades and not all Asians need to have good grades. Everyone will always have a religion, but that does not mean you can judge them by it. Most people also think Asians are weak and easy to pick on. That is very untrue that hurts me how others always try to bully us. Everyone is different, either some strong or some weak. One thing that really hurts me is how others think Asians stink in sports. We happen to sometimes not be so good in sports, but not all. If all Asians stink in sports, then why would Jeremy Lin even be in the NBA? Being an Asian really influences me every day in life.

(NOTE: THIS IS THE SECOND ONE, I REDID THE 2 QUESTIONS)

Michael Vu | 9 comments One role that he was born into was being poor. If other people cared about their dreams life for them would be very nice. They would be able to move out of the rez and maybe life with other people. The reason I picked this is because in our world money is very needed to have a good life without money you may not live the best life you can get. Like in the book when he first got to the other school it said he had a GLAD bag for a backpack for to hold his school items. And he barely gets to make it home because they don have money got gas and he has to htichike.

One role I was born into was being azn my mom thinks of me too much. When I was young she said you don have to be 100% just at ok. But once I started middle school and I got “ok” grades she yelled at me like I was the world’s dumbest kid. I yelled back at her telling her she said I didn’t have to be 100% then she said I want you to do all your work and do everything right that’s my ok after I was like WHAT????. being azn is hard everyone wants more of you and this makes a large inpact on my everyday life

message 13: by Trinity (new)

Trinity Burgos | 12 comments The role that I think was most influential in Arnold's life would be him being a Native American One of the reasons why is because he always seems to blame all of the things he does based on because he's native american. Which makes him want to hate his background even more. Another example would be about his education. He thinks that the reason why he doesn't get enough education is because he is Native American. One of the problems that stand out the most to him would be being poor. Which has to do with using the same books from old generations or never being able to buy the newest clothes in style so their clothes are cheap.
One role that most influenced me in my life was being a christian. one of the reasons why would be because everybody would think negatively about me. Like saying my religion is too strict, and that we all hate gays, which is not true. maybe it can be true to some extent but, it does't automatically mean that i am against gays or i judge people on a certain way on how they look. Like for example, my grandma she's really strict when it comes to religion like she thinks listening to pop music is bad but that doesn't mean i believe on what she says is true.

message 14: by Ivan (new)

Ivan (ivanski711) | 7 comments The role that is most influential in Arnold's life is Arnold drawing cartoons. In the realistic fiction book The absolute true diary of a part time Indian by Sherman Alexie there is a 13 year old boy named Arnold Spirit who draws many cartoons to express his feelings about a person, or just how he is feeling in general. The reason why Arnold expresses his feelings through artwork is because he has no one to talk to besides his grandma Ms. Spirit. Sometimes Arnold would draw detailed pictures of people in his life who he loves, and admires. What I find interesting is that Arnold draws more cartoon like drawing about people in his life that he doesn't care as much about.

I want to piggy back off of what Monica said, and at the same time disagree. I have a 6 year old stepbrother who is THE most annoying kid in this world. His name is Christian, and he is the loudest screamer I have ever heard, you can't even ask him to do something simple as hang up your bath towel without him going into a screaming match. It is the most embarrasing thing to walk with him in the street when he is screaming as loud as he always does. So sorry Monica you do not have the most annoying brother, I do...

message 15: by Ekram (new)

Ekram (Dragontamer3000) | 1 comments The role he has would be as a cartoonists because arnold really likes to draw everything in his life.
For example in the text it showed us that arnold love to draw people and places. This shows that arnold really likes to draw a lot of things like his friend but he doesn't like arnold to draw him. Another example was that he drawed everything he saw and drawed mostly when he gets bullied.

One role I have was a gamer because I love to play games and play online. For example I play games like tf2 or killing floor and this effected me because I mostly play all day that makes me do my work at night. This shows that I forget to do my work and never get to finish my work as much.
