Reflecting on our conversation today about characterization, choose a trait that describes your protagonist. Find EVIDENCE to support your idea and explain how it proves the trait.

In case you're stuck, think about our "chart" example from class and how you could write it as a paragraph.

In Sherman Alexie's realistic fiction novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the trait that best describes Arnold Spirit is hopeful. Arnold is a fourteen year-old Native American who has grown up on the poverty stricken Spokane reservation in Washington state. Arnold, unlike many people on the "rez," loves learning, even professing himself to be a "book kisser." Unfortunately, due to a lack of money and overall feeling of helplessness, the reservation schools are filled with old textbooks and negligent teachers. After a fit of disgust over receiving his mother's thirty year old text book, Arnold decides he wants to go to Reardan High School, a school that has many educational resources and opportunities that he would never get at the rez. He bravely and firmly tells his parents, "I want to go to Reardan" (45). This statement shows that he is hopeful, because instead of accepting a bleak future in which his spirit and love of learning is "killed," Arnold instead decides that he deserves better and hopes that by going to Reardan, he will achieve the bright future of which he has dreamed. Therefore, a trait that describes Arnold is hopeful.

Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

In the book City of Glass by Cassandra Clare Clary's trait that describes her the most is that she never gives up. In the first book in the first book her mother was kidnapped. When things looked down she never looked down. She kept fighting until she found her mother. Also when Simon was turned into a rat by the vampires, she tried and tried again to find him no matter what it took.

Wesley | 50 comments in my book, "Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children" my protagonist named Jacob has a trait that best describes his as insecure. on page 267 he has a conversation with himself. he says negative things about hi and his dad, like how his dad was very cool and amazing compared to him. his voice told him that jacob was a little girl compared to his dad. these examples show how he is insecure.

Altamir III III (longdeoking) | 27 comments In my book,"Game" by Walter Dean Myers, my protagonists trait that describes him is that he is a great basketball player. Yet where I am in the book, almost everybody in the book wants him to be in the team. They say that he is the guy that makes the team win. On page 133, Ernie says "No man" Ernie tells the coach,"Bring Drew in! I don`t want to lose this game!" This shows how Drew is important to the team. Drew is the star of the team.

Corey | 43 comments In the book "Diary of the wimpy kid The last straw" the trait that best describes Greg is mean. Greg is 12 and is going to high school. Greg likes to play jokes and likes to sleep a lot. After playing too many jokes, his dad wanted to send him off to the army. Of course Greg didnt like that idea. "Hey look at me" was example of a joke that he made fun of at his dad. This proves that making fun of people and playing a lot of jokes means that you are mean to people. Therefore, a trait that describe Greg would be mean.

Andy Chen | 44 comments In the book, "The Battle of the Labyrinth, the best word to describe Percy has to be brave. Throughout the book, he was extremely confident in going through all the dangerous events from his journey. During his journey, he had to fight against Luke to have revenge for what he did to Camp Half Blood and him. Also, Percy had to fight against Lord Kronos and his titans in order to get out of the cave safely. Another reason why Percy is really brave is because he took advantages of Nico's evil servants. He planned to attack them and was using Nico all the time.

Sydney Mok (SydneyMok) | 43 comments In the book My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, there are many character but I think Anna's most influential role is she has low self confidence. She is 13 years old and since she was born, the purpose for her to be born was to help her sister survive from leukimeia. Anna was born scientifically and her parents knew everything when she was going to be born. Now she is 13 and she's still being a donor to her sister. She never liked doing this even though she was helping and saving her sister's life. Her parents always cared for Kate more, they never asked if she felt ok to giving her blood and body parts to her sister's health. She would always do what's best for her sister and always listened to her parents but now Kate needs a kidney but Anna doesn't want to give that to her so she brings it to court and shows confidence.

Gaby | 7 comments In the book Homeboyz by Alan Lawrence Sitomer, the trait that mostly describes my protagonist Teddy is determind . Teddy is 17 years old and a big brother to his little sister Tina. They both live alone in the "hood" . They were standing at an ice cream shop in line when they hear POP POP POP POP the shot her in the chest . After all that Teddy was determinded to find the gang ( Andreson brothers ) that shot his sister. After that secne in my book there was a part when they said " T- Bear - that was teddys a.k.a on the streets - only cared about one thing ..... revenge" Thats showing me that he is determind to get back at the Adreson brothers for shooting her.

Zoe | 25 comments The book I am reading is called "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini. One of the main protagonists in the book is Eragon. The trait that describes Eragon the best is brave. In the book, Eragon is told that he is a dragon rider, and that Galbotorix, the king of the Empire is willing to catch Eragon so that he can become more powerful. After Eragon hears about Galbotorix, he closes a desert to join the Varden, a group of people that are against Galbatorix. One reason that shows he is brave is that even though Galbotorix sent Urgals after Eragon to catch him, he is still willing to go to the Varden.

Aaron | 22 comments In my book "A man named Dave" the antagonist was the mother because she would beat him. One trait she had was actions because I felt like she treated Dave with no consideration and took action, and started beating him.

Jamilah B | 37 comments The book/memoir that I am reading is A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. The trait that describes Ishmael is creative. He love listening to rap music and he has many cassettes with rap music on them. He listens to them all the time and he loves dancing to them. He had a talent show at his school and he performed the dance with his brother, and friends. He had to show this dance to a chief who stopped him and his friends in the forest. "Now you show me how you, your brother, and friends did it," the chief said.(67). This shows that he is very free and that he really enjoys music and hes creatively free.

Karen (allergic2haters) | 37 comments Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

In the book MockingJay by Suzanne Collins the traits that mostly describes my protagonist Katniss is virtue of justice, bravery/courageous/spirit, warrior/solider/hunter and a righteous warrior. On page 36 it shows her trait. It said "For instance, if you don't finish something and want to save it for later, you can't take it from the dinning hall. For a couple of people like Gale and I, who've been in charge of our families' food supply for years, it doesn't sit well. We know how to be hungry, but not how to be told how to handle what provisions we have. In some ways, District 13 is even me controlling than the Capitol." This shows that Katniss is a hunter, solider, and a warrior. On page 36 it said "Hey, maybe I should make that a condition of being the MockingJay." "I'm already asking for the moon by demanding they spare Peeta's life." Meaning by spare Peeta's life she just wants him to be alive. "My name is Katniss Everdeen. I am seventeen years old. My home is District 12. I was in the Hunger Games.. I escaped. The Capitol hates me. Peeta was taken prisoner. He is alive. He is a traitor but alive. I have to keep him alive..." In the book it's telling that what she wrote to talk to the Capitol to be the MockingJay. On page 40 "When the war is over, if we've won, Peeta will be pardoned. No form of punishment will be inflicted," I continued, "The same goes for the other captured tributes, Johanna and Enobaria. Frankly I don't care about Enobaria, the vicious District 2 tribute." This mean that Katniss is bravely, courageous, and spirit. On page 41 "They'll be granted immunity!" I feel myself rising from my chair, my voice full and resonant, "You will personally pledge this in front of the entire population of District 13 and the remainder of 12. Soon. Today. It will be recorded for future generation. You will hold yourself and your government responsible for their safely, or you'll find yourself another MockingJay!" Later on in the page " I'll make the announcement then. Is there anything left on your list Katniss?" My paper's crumpled into the ball in my right fist. I flatten the sheet against the table and read the rickety letters. "Just one more thing. I kill Snow." They (the capitol) said "When the times comes, I'll flip you for it?" This shows Katniss what a virtue of justice she is.

Yamil Cifuentes | 40 comments In my book, "Every man for himself, Ten Short Stories About Being A Guy" (I know not my best choice) all the chapters have different characters and different events so I am going to talk about the first chapter. The first chapter is called "The prom prize." Its about an African American junior, Fly Williams, who's friends run a lottery to see how many girls would put their name in a drawing to win a date to prom with him.So the protagonist is a kind of person to find dates with cheap shots. "I need a girl to the prom," he would say. This show he have a lot of plans to make it work so he is a solver.

Gabby T. | 22 comments In the book mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
the protanist Katniss Everdeen her trait is being mentally strong. I think this is one of Katniss's traits because she has been through alot. A way she is mentally strong is when cinna died and she watched it she didn't get off the plate or brake down crying instead she carried on with the hunger games. This shows she mentally strong because even though it hurt her to see him die she still carried on and pushed through the pain.

Kenjo | 41 comments In the book, "Around The World In 80 Days," the trait that best describes the protagonist (Mr. Fogg) is calmness. During the 80 days in which Mr. Fogg and Passepartout attempt to travel the world, there were many moments when the journey could've failed. An example of this was when the steamboat left the port Mr. Fogg realized that he was in a tough situation. He was several hours late, eventually he offered a large sum of money to another man who gave in to carry them to California from Hong Kong. There were also times when his servant, Passepartout was panicking but Mr. Fogg would calm him down and find a solution. Without this trait Mr. Fogg would most likely not have been able to succeed in the journey.

Wesley | 50 comments in my book the Mark of Athena, the trait that best describes one of my protagonist (Annabeth) is deadly pride. this is shown when she is always thinking about making herself shine and be the number 1. in the book this is supported when she discovers that Percy rejected another girl for her.
