Ok. Took me AGES to finish this (I confess, I hardly read long fantasy books any more), but I really did love it. I was concerned about the third book in a series being nominated, but having skipped the second one and not read the first in some time I thought this stood relatively alone quite well. Great character development (especially considering how many characters there were), good setting, lots of foreshadowing, and a lot to think about. I'd be up for discussing this if others are game.

I am so not into fantasy these days. I've been unsure about this one since it's the third in a series - do I have to read the first two just to get to this one?!!!

I think I'd rather read Seraphina if I'm going to read fantasy.

When are we going to make a final decision on titles to read? Time's a tickin"!!!

btw, I think this is a much stronger field than last year, except for Rotters, of course.

Jayanne | 6 comments It had been a while since Graceling and I thought it stood alone well. There were fewer fantasy elements, more about dealing with reconstruction and with the lingering aftermath of war.

Emily (e_dagg) I thought this was the most literary of the three books, and it stands alone. My main concern was: will younger readers fully understand what types of torture were inflicted on Leck's juvenile victims? That was truly horrifying to me. Will the rape & torture go over the heads of younger readers? (I hope so!)
