Choose the quote below that you feel best represents Rowdy and Arnold. In ONE paragraph, explain how it applies to Arnold. In a SECOND paragraph, explain how it applies to Rowdy. Make sure you provide specific moments from the text and explain how they support your ideas.

“There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.” –Jawaharal Nehru

“To lose is to learn.” –Anonymous

Monica | 14 comments In my opinion, I think that the first quote really applies to both Rowdy and Arnold. "There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear." How this quote applies to Arnold is that since he is going out of the rez and into the "white" neighborhood, he is afraid of being the only Native American in the school there, in exception of the school mascot. Fear is the most thing that really affects his life. For instance, fear makes him weak and Arnold can't stand up for himself when he gets bullied. Fear makes him become Rowdy's best friend, since he can't stand it at the thought of Rowdy fighting him, and fear makes him want to get out of the rez. His whole life is going against FEAR! At the beginning of the book, before his dog (best friend) died, Arnold was actually living in fear. Every day, every time, when Oscar sneezes, Arnold stiffles a sob. He practically wants to close his eyes and wishes everything will be okay again. But, that doesn't help. Arnold's dad takes the gun and shoots Oscar, and he's dead. There's nothing Arnold can do to make Oscar come back to life again. This is why fear is the most dangerous thing in life. Once you have fear, you can never escape from it ever again.

This simple quote also applies to Rowdy. If you have read the book, you can probably see that Rowdy is the kind of person who can't control himself, he has a very big temper problem. He's not the kind of person that you can easily be friends with. Its better to not be friends with him. So now you are wondering, if Rowdy is the kind of person who can fight anyone he sees, can he have fear? Well, the answer is yes. Anyone in the world can have fear and that is why Rowdy is living his whole life fighting people. Think about your life. When somebody is very angry or afraid of something, can they go through their life with happiness and enjoyment? The answer is NO! No one can do that. This satifies the fact that Rowdy is probably angry or having a fear about something. In the Absolutely True Diary of a Part time Indian, in the chapter where Arnold tells him that he is leaving the rez and going to go to Reardan for education, Rowdy buckles down and starts to cry. This shows how Rowdy's life is very unstable. In addition to crying, Rowdy also punches Arnold right in the face! In my opinion, it is telling me that he is not going to be himself when Arnold leaves. He is going to be sad in his own way. For instance he might be killing and beating up everybody. In conclusion, fear can occur to everybody, even big tough guys.

Melanie M. (MissMello) | 6 comments In the book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time indian by Sherman Alexie, The quote "There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear."- Jawaharal Nehru relates to Arnold because Arnold is scared to go to a White School in Town Rearden. I think Arnolds fear is maybe because he thinks that he will be the only native american there but the education would be better so Arnold does not care. Arnolds fear dosent get in the way though but his bestfriend (Rowdy) does. He dosent want to make Rowdy mad that he is leaving but Rowdy got mad anyway and because of that he still went to the White School.

This quotes also relates to rowdy because mostly the only way (Sometimes) for people like Rowdy to get out anger or fustration they think of violance. This also happend when someone is afraid of something so they most likely will use violence. If you read that chapter where Arnold tells Rowdy about him switching school it will say Rowdy started to cry and thats how you know he was sad or afraid. Deep down inside when Rowdy beat Arnold up he new he was doing the wrong thing.

The quote said by Jawaharal Nehru is, “There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.” This quote reflects to Arnold and Rowley in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie. This quote mostly applies to Arnold differently. Arnold is a kid that has a bad appearance and is a Native American. Most people think that Native Americans have no dream or future, but Arnold does. That is Arnold’s biggest fear now. He moves to a rich school full of whites and is scared. He is mainly afraid of being made fun of from his appearance and him being a Native American. Arnold had his fear, but it was not the first time. Back in the Native American school, he was also made fun of for his appearance. He didn’t need to be scared. Fear is also happening in Arnold’s life wherever he goes and he no longer needs to be scared. If he needs a good career and is hopeful, he needs to pass whatever that is blocking him from it.

The quote also applies a little to Rowley which is Arnold’s best friend. Rowley is very different from Arnold, but they are still friends protecting each other. Arnold is a very hopeful person, also wanting tons of education. Rowley is different, he is a tough guy that always fights and loses control of what he does. He also has anger issues. Rowley always get mad at stuff and start beating it. That is one of the fears he has. Having no fear is when things are peaceful, but not to Rowley. Rowley always gets in fights to pass his fear because he is not afraid and thinks it isn’t bad. Up to the part we read in class, Arnold told Rowley he was leaving. Rowley was sad and it was a fear. He got so mad that he passes the fear by punching Arnold in the face. Rowley is an unbeatable guy that passes all his fears and they aren’t bad.

Ben Friedman | 7 comments The quote “To lose is to learn.” –Anonymous reflects Arnold and Rowley in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie. One way the quote is shown in Arnold’s life is. In order to supply himself with a better education and a more hopeful future. Arnold has to loose. Arnold looses in may ways he looses because by leaving the reservation and his best friend to go to a white based school where native Americans are not welcome he is taking the risk of being shunned by both his tribal members and his new school. mates. This shows tat Arnold has to loose before he can learn because in order to achieve ultimate knowledge and a wonderful education he has to leave the reservation and per sure a whole entire new life style when he is in school.

Although the quote applies to Arnold slightly more it also affects Rowley. One way the quote is shown to affect Rowley is. By loosing Arnold he is now learning how to be more independent. This shows while Rowley is loosing his best friend he is also gaining independence. Another piece of evidence that shows how the quote also affects Rowley is now that Arnold is gone we can infer that Rowley is going to attempt to make an effect to become nicer to his piers and to make friends. This shows that even though Rowley is loosing a huge aspect of his life he may be able to drop the negative attitude and become and nicer person.

Ivan (ivanski711) | 7 comments In the realistic fiction book Absolute Dairy Of A Part Time Indian I have read enough to believe that the first quote “There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.” –Jawaharal Nehru applies to both Arnold and Rowdy in different ways.

This quote applies to Arnold because he lived in fear. He was afraid of being bullied, being called harsh names on the rez because of his brain disorders, big feet, and small body. He also feared that his dog passing away would make him more lonely, Oscar was Arnolds only friend at that time. When Oscar died Arnold lost all hope of being happy, until Arnold met Rowdy. Arnold and Rowdy became bestfriends, and over the years Rowdy has been Arnold's protector, especially when it came to bullies, and other threats around him. The reason why a kid like Arnold, and a kid like Rowdy would become friends is because people were scared of Rowdy, therefore he had no friends, and Arnold was scary looking, so he didn't have any friends either.

This quote applies to Rowdy because when Arnold and Rowdy had an arguement that broke up their friendship Rowdy had lost his only friend, and feared that he will never have another friend again, and that Arnold will not want to be his friend ever again. At one point Rowdy started crying because of his relationship with Arnold, Rowdy wasn't such a tuff guy then. This shows how fear can get in the way of happiness, and friendships. Rowdy was a boys with fear, who let it rule his life.

Elva C. | 13 comments I think the quote, "There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear," by Jawaharal Nehru reflects to both Arnold and Rowdy in the book, The Absolute True Diary Of A Part Time Indian , by Sherman Alexie. This quote applies to Arnold, is that because Arnold is a Native American, who lives on the rez, and he wants to go to Rearden, a school with a better education for Arnold than the rez, and is filled with white people. The school's mascot is an Native American, which Arnold is one himself. Arnold also has bad appearances so he is afraid that he will get bullied by the other kids from Rearden, because he is an Native American who lives in the rez, and his appearance. Kids in the rez, already are bullying him, and Arnold fears that he will be bullied even more, since he might be the only Native American going to a white school. That is Arnold's biggest fear right now in the book.

This quote also applies to Rowdy too. This quote applies to Rowdy is, he is Arnold's best friend. His only friend. In one of the chapters, Arnold told Rowdy that he is going to Rearden. Rowdy is a type of person who can't control his feelings, so, he gets his anger out by hitting people. Rowdy is sad that Arnold is leaving the rez, to go to another school, and he fears that he will loose his only friend. But Rowdy has an anger problem, so instead, he hits Arnold in the face, which he knows that it was his weak, and fragile part of his whole body. Rowdy also cried, and that shows us that he cares about Arnold, and he doesn't want him to leave the rez. That is Rowdy's fear and has made an impact to his life. The fear of Arnold going to Rearden and the fear that he will lose his best, and only friend.

Jack Brill | 12 comments The quote “There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.” reminds me of Arnold and Rowley in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie. This quote mostly directs to Arnold Arnold is a kid that has a very odd looking appearance and is an Native American most people think that Native Americans are stupid, poor, or have nothing to look foward to for the rest of his life but Arnold does. That is Arnold’s biggest fear now. He moves to a rich school called Rearden full of white people and he is scared. He is mostly afraid of being made fun of how he looks being the only Native American. Arnold also has a fear, but it was not the first time. Back in the Native American school in the rez he was also made fun of for how he looked He didn’t have to be scared. Fear is also happening in Arnold’s life whenever he goes somewhere and he no longer needs to be scared. If he needs a good career and is hopeful, he needs to leave behind whatever that is blocking him from achieve

The quote also kind of direct's to Rowley who happends to be Arnold’s best and only friend. Rowdy is very different than Arnold, but they are still friends protecting one another. Arnold is a very hopeful person, also wants a way better education. Rowdy is different than Arnold, he is a tough guy that always fights and is aggressive. He also has anger issues. Rowdy always get mad at stuff and start beating it. That is one of the fears he has. Having no fear is when things are peaceful, but not to Rowdy. Rowdy always gets in fights to pass his fear because he is not afraid and thinks it isn’t bad. Up to the part we read in class, Arnold told Rowdy he was leaving. Rowdy was upset and he was afraid, he was so upset it turned into anger and got so mad that he passes the fear by punching Arnold in the face.

Mark Markola | 5 comments In the book, The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the first quote “There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.” This quote relates to Arnold a great deal because Arnold has lived in a world of fear for his entire life. One example is when Arnold desired to go to Rearden; a school predominantly with rich white kids, for a better education. Arnold then discovers he is the only Indian around and becomes scared. Individuals stared at him as if he was an alien from a different planet which causes Arnold to feel insecure. Another example is when Rowdy wanted Arnold to go to the powwow fair but Arnold was too scared for fear he would be beaten even though Rowdy offered him protection and safety. Arnold’s fear of people possibly losing control and picking on him gets in the way of attending the powwow.
The quote also affects Rowdy emotionally yet different from Arnold. Rowdy is a big, tough macho man who doesn’t show fear but acts out in fear due to his abuse by his father. In the chapter, Arnold expresses to Rowdy that he chooses to attend Rearden. Rowdy is unable to control his emotions and began screaming from anxiety of losing his best friend and ended up punching Arnold in the face on his super sensitive spot. Rowdy felt sorry for hurting his best friend but then again was very upset that Arnold is leaving him. Unfortunately, Rowdy is continuously beaten by his father who becomes drunk often and for Rowdy he redirects his fear of his father on others by fighting.

Kailey | 7 comments The quote "to lose is to learn" by Anonymous represents Arnold in the realistic fiction story The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This quote represents Arnold because he lost his best friend and he got a better education out of it. Also, to receive a better education, Arnold must leave the reservation and what he remembers as his friend(s). Arnold also loses the hope of going back to the reservation school with everything that will go back to normal. Everyone will have lost faith in him.

This quote represents Rowdy by him losing his best friend and becoming to a more angrier state and would be losing the one thing he cared about. Arnold was the one thing that kept Rowdy refused tat anyone injure and he protected Arnold. the things that Rowdy learns is that people change and you have to learn from what happens. Also how close you were to Arnold before he left.

Justin Yu | 10 comments In Sherman Alexie's realistic fiction, The absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian, the quote "There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear." This quote relates to Arnold because Arnold's life so far in the book, he is an unloved hermit but he wants to travel around meeting new people but doesn't receive that courage until Mr.P comes along. Mr.P had talked him into leaving the rez and he decided to be reborn. He has a new start in Reardan. Arnold is scared of leaving the rez because of how Rowdy would react. However, at page 51, it says,"Man, I was scared of those Reardan kids, and maybe I was scared of hope, too, but Rowdy absolutely hated all of it "Rowdy," I said. "I'm going to Reardan tomorrow."" This shows me that Arnold had worked up enough courage to tell Rowdy. But Rowdy didn't think it was for real. Then at page 52,Rowdy shouted, " Don't touch me you retarded fag!" This can also tell me that Arnold is a bit scared of his former best friend Rowdy. he has also been punched in the face, Arnold's most sensitive spot. But since he has a mix of both Rowdy and Reardan, this proves the quote and Arnold is scared of both and yet they can lead to dangerous paths but he thinks positively towards these 2 things

Emily | 4 comments The quote that I think represents both Arnold and Rowdy is “There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.” Jawaharal Nehru. This represents Arnold because Arnold wants to leave the “Rez” and go to the white people school, but he feels like they wont like him because his Native American and they way he dresses isn’t expensive as theirs or nice as theirs. And after losing all those games against them. But the big part is leaving his best friend, to go to a school that all of the people he knows are against. Even though, when his doing it for his own future.

This also represents Rowdy, because Rowdy is like a very angry person. It’s easy to get him mad, but he goes overboard which makes us all wonder that he has anger management problems. And after hearing that his best friend Arnold is leaving him and their school to go to the school they’re against, really disappointed him and he got angry.

Trinity Burgos | 12 comments In the my opinion the quote "There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear" by jawaharal nehru i think it best relates to arnolds and rowdys relationship in the book The Absolute True Diary Of a Part Time indian by sherman alexie. In the relationship between arnold and rowdy, arnold is mostly the one with the fear of rowdy in the reltationship. Like for example, when arnold made a desision to go to another school he was afraid to tell rowdy because of the way he knows he reacts to certain situations, and when he told rowdy, rowdy got madp and screamed at him and called him names. Which is the messed up part of their relstionship.
Also relating to this quote it applies it applies to rowdy by just basically the way he acts around Arnold and other people. One issue that rowdy has to deal with is anger. So instead of just talking things out he takes the hard way and yells and screames and also making the person feel bad themselves. I think one of the reasons why rowdy acts this way isdind because he has alot of fear in his life. Maybe he's afraid of lo

Essam Alhumoz | 7 comments In my opinion, the second quote appears to relate to Rowdy and Arnold. The second quote, “To lose is to learn.” It applies to Arnold because when he is transferring into an all “white” school, but loses Rowdy on the process of it. Arnold may have lost his best friend, but he gained a better education in which it will help his future. When Arnold left the reservation he was risked being bullied by all of his tribe members, but Arnold didn’t care because he knew if he left the reservation it would give him a another chance at life.
Although, this quote applies to Arnold it applies to Rowdy as well when he loses Arnold. When Rowdy loses Arnold as a best friend he will soon learn to be independent. Rowdy had always had Arnold by his side, but when Arnold moved to the Rearden Rowdy and Arnold were no longer friends. Rowdy punched Arnold in the head. Rowdy will hopefully learn to control his temper, and the consequences that are caused. Now, Rowdy lost a best friend but next time if he doesn’t learn to control his temper he will lose something much worse.

Michael Vu | 9 comments The quote I pick is “To lose is to learn.” I picked this because Arnold has lost a lot of things in his life. When his dog died he knew that he couldn’t save him because they were too poor and he couldn’t find any money. When he changed to the other school Rowdy hated him. Rowdy had been best friends ever since they were born and now he hated him. When he got beat up and yelled at by his own best friend he knew that going to the other school would cost him everything that he had on the rez.

The way I think this would match Rowdy because his dad’s gets drunk and abuses his wife and son a lot so he loses the safely of his own home when Arnold started going to the other school he got mad and beat him up even when they been long time friends. Rowdy is a tough person and fights for Arnold he lost a best friend and new keeps hating him.

message 19: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 11 comments The quote I choose is "To lose is to learn." This quote relates to Arnold because his friendship with Rowdy was broken. He changed highschools to get a better education and this caused friction in their friendship. Another example is when Arnold hung out with Rowdy, Rowdy always protected Arnold from bullies. When Arnold went to the new school, he stood up for himself for the first time as Rowdy wasn't there.

This quote relates to Rowdy as he lost his only friend Arnold and day after day he became lonely because he lost the only good thing in his life. Another example is Rowdy kept the cartoon Arnold gave him as a friendship offering. Rowdy did not rip the photo because he knew how important it was to Arnold and missed him.
