A pedestrian answer is that it began with the velvet underground in the 60s and evolved from punk/new wave/art-centric rock of the 70s....pere ubu, television, talking heads, devo, etc. And then became what was called "college rock radio" in the 80s R.E.M, the Replacements, Minutemen and then was being called "alternative rock" in the late 80s and early 90s to which it eventually took upon the nomenclature "Indie Rock".
Basically it is Rock music that shuns the major labels and conventional distribution outlets. Now days though, that doesn't mean too much. Or does it? I don't really know.
