Carolyn i led our Book Group's discussion on My Name is Mary Sutter. It provoked plenty of discussion.

I was attracted first by the strong, determined woman character, and appalled by the lack of planning for medical care during the Civil War and the conditions doctors and nurses worked under. After re-reading, I looked up "Civil War Nurses" on-line and found letters from actual nurses which described many of the things the book did. The library had a reference book on Women in the Civil War. I found two books I could take out that showed surgeons' instruments used then and many other pictures and drawings that depicted things about the war, equipment, and medical efforts mentioned in the book. I'm very glad I was born after antibiotics were discovered and sanitary practices well known.

I agree that this book is well worth reading.

Brenda Haven I really enjoyed this book. It was a very stark, realistic account of the happenings during the civil war.

Victoria What a strong heroine, Mary Sutter truly embodied a woman who fought for the war if not in it.
I read this almost three years ago and I still distinctly recall the vivid setting and honest detail that time warped me to the civil war for a day! Great!
