The River Acheron is the first of three infernal rivers in Hell. The others being the Styx and the Phlegethon. All three eventually descend through all of Hell and pool into the Ninth Circle, where they freeze and form Lake Cocytus.

The Acheron is a very large and wide river that circles around the vestibule of Hell. On the other side of Acheron lies Limbo and the court of King Minos. Charon ferries the shades of the damned across the Acheron. A dreary fog hangs over the water, and lightning strikes light up the sky above it. On its shores lie those who lived with neither infamy or praise, denied entry into the Inferno or Paradise.

Charon is the ferryman of the dead who appears as an anthropomorphic boat with a giant ship for a body. His sworn duty is to ferry the souls of the damned across the infernal River Acheron, to Limbo beyond.
