Libbie I realize that I'm risking being attacked by flying monkeys over this, but I keep seeing nothing but flailing over this series and I can't understand it.

Am I alone in a sea of fangirls, or are there others that just don't get the appeal? Who think that no matter how "sexy" V'lane is, he's also a rapist, and pretty gleeful/unrepentant about it? That think Barrons could have saved Mac several life-threatening problems/being gang-raped, if he'd just given her vital information rather than yelling at her when she didn't read his mind?

message 2: by Angela (new)

Angela Lane I'm pretty sure!

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, great series, can't see how anyone doesn't like them.

Kristal Taylor Would love to read another series like the Fever series....

message 5: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen I liked the series, but I do agree with you about those things. There were several issues I had with the series including what you mentioned, among others. So I can understand how someone would find the series annoying, but I was able to look past the annoying for whatever reason and at the end her rapist was avenged at some level.

Kristal Taylor Jen that is your opinion. And we all are entitled to them. Don't ruin the ending for the rest of us. You won't change my mind. I love this series...

message 7: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Bolen I'm right there with you, I read this book and I really don't want to read any more. I kept hoping it would get better, but no it didn't. And anyone has the right to hate any book, people that attack other people over opinions are the ones in the wrong.

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ I don't think ur the only one who doesn't like this series, but u are definitely in the small minority that don't like it. It's just one of those series that has just enough to appeal to the masses. There is plenty in this series overall, where I can see why so many love it and why some don't... I am one who loved this series. I was hooked from the 1stbook. But we all like what we like, love what we love, and hate what we hate when it comes to books.*shrugs*

message 9: by Beaupeep (new)

Beaupeep Good news - you are not alone. I worked my way through the first three books and kept continuing because of the reviews but by the time I got to the end I hated it - absolutely hated it. So well done you for putting yourself out there!

message 10: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Chapman I am in agreement with Stephanie. I made it through the end of this book, and I don't think I can make myself continue with the series.

I understand where you are coming from. In my opinion, the items that you mentioned are some of the things that makes it a great series. KMM creates characters that people have a love/hate relationship with. It tears at our emotions and you know that the characters are not really "good." I think that is the main point of the book. There really are no "good" characters in the series. Many are down right evil. Just because KMM writes about them and we read and enjoy the books does not mean we are condoning what the characters have done or allowed to have done to others. Some parts are hard to read. But those parts of the story shape certain characters. This series is not a HEA. But I still love the series.

message 12: by Gayle (new)

Gayle Very well said Michelle!!

Totally agree.

message 14: by Kyra (new)

Kyra I thought it was an ok series. I think the main reason I didn't like the series is because of Mac. I didn't get how she was supposed so great and powerful. I liked Dani's book (and Dani) much better.

Lauren (aplpeach) I have the series, but I couldn't finish it. It wasn't what I was expecting

message 16: by Debra (new)

Debra Very well said, Michelle. I finished this series but wasn't sure until maybe book 3 that I really liked it. I'm not sure I liked much of any of the characters--even Mac and Barrons. Because I found the characters interesting (example: V'lane) does not mean in any way I condone what the character does. It just makes them interesting. Barrons is another character that it was much easier to see the "bad" parts of the character, struggle to see some of the "good" but you still like reading about them and their exploits even when they make you mad. But a book should bring about emotions in us I think.

message 17: by Janee (new)

Janee I LOVE them can't see how any one wouldn't!!!

message 18: by Lise (new)

Lise Most great books are flawed, they all have issues that annoy or bother. I didn't love all the characters, I didn't like all the plot twists and I definitely had issues. But those were easily overlooked because the story is amazing, the main character was great (I seriously loved her, mostly because she started off as a spoiled little girl and matured into a pretty awesome heroine.) and KMM just grabbed me with this book and refused to let go. I really wish there were more books like this (seriously if u have suggestions, bring em on)

I understand if this is not ur cup of tea and I see no reason why people would need to attack you (with or without the aid of flying monkeys) for your opinion, since it was politely given without insult or malice. But considering all that is currently available in the genre, definitely one of the best.

"But considering all that is currently available in the genre, definitely one of the best."

Going by what you've said and what's on your Goodreads list, it seems like you haven't read many urban fantasy novels so how can you make a sweeping statement like that?

Authors like Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh, Eileen Wilks, Jeaniene Frost, Rachel Cain, Ann Aguirre, Karen Chance, Gena Showalter, Shannon Mayer, Seanan McGuire, Jaye Wells and Darynda Jones are very popular at the moment.

You've only read three urban fantasy series so you haven't even scratched the surface.
If you're more into paranormal romance novels than urban fantasy then some of the authors mentioned above are still relevant, though I would add Christine Feehan, Kresley Cole and Sherrilyn Kenyon to the list.

message 20: by Lise (new)

Lise I've actually read a lot of them, though not all of them ofc.

I can't say I have them all listed on goodreads though (Singh, Frost, Cain, feehan, cole and Kenyon etc..) Considering I have't been active here for that long, and that I don't review/rate every book I read or have read in the past.

I find it funny that you can deduct I've only read three UF series based on the measly 90(ish) books I have listed on GR...

Anyway as for those you've suggested that I haven't read, I'll definitely give them a try.

Why do you consider that to be wrong? If your profile states that you're from Belgium, I'm going to believe that you're from Belgium. It's the same thing. If you've only listed 3 urban fantasy series as 'Read', I'm going to believe that you've only read 3 urban fantasy series, otherwise you would have listed more under that section.

If you've read a lot more books then put them under your 'Read' list. That way, the next time you're asking for recommendations, people can have a look at what you've already read and will be able to recommend things to you.
If you update your profile or give a specific list of series/authors you enjoyed, then I'll be able to help you. Did you enjoy this series specifically because of the faery aspect, or something else?

message 22: by Lise (new)

Lise I know I should update it more but tbh I can't always keep up and I don't think to look up books I've read before.. But I concede your point, it would make it a hell of a lot easier to get recommendations so I'll work on that ;)

I love the faery aspect of the book, but I also really enjoyed the world building and the characters. I love fantasy in all shapes though so it doesn't really have to be faeries.

For example I loved the early anita blake series.
I loved the hunger games
I loved kelley armstrongs women of the otherworld.
I liked the angelfall books

I've already added a few of your suggestions to my (ever growing) TBR pile, so thanks!

Susan Chesnoff I love how we can love and hate this book or that Author! That is exactly what it's all about the great minds of these amazing Authors. ps, I love KMM every book she has written! Read all the Highlanders first and then moved onto the Fever group. :) have fun reading I can't keep my eyes open sometimes and have to just stop reading! Oh how I hate that.

I totally agree Susan. We each have our own opinions. And this is a great place to express and discuss those opinions. Hopefully without judgment or ridicule.

message 25: by Buttercup (new)

Buttercup Sometimes it's just like that. I love the fever series, it's my absolute favourite. But I feel like the only one in the world who loathes The Hunger Games series. I couldn't get past the first book, imagine my surprise at its popularity and now movies! I thought I must try this series again, I've missed something, but no....still don't like it.

I loved the 1st book of the Hunger Games trilogy. That was the best one, IMO. The 2nd book I hated & I was a bit let down with how it closed in the final book. I did go see the 1st film and I wasn't all that impressed. So I had no desire to see the other 2 films. It's a trilogy I thought peaked in the 1st book & should have been left at that. Even though it's not a trilogy I love, I can see why many go gah gah for it. Especially when I think about all the love & hate that's paramount with the Twilight Saga. Books & Films alike.

message 27: by Kyra (new)

Kyra Buttercup, I'm with you on The Hunger Games. I struggled with the first book and didn't bother with the other two. I ended up playing Bejeweled Blitz during the movie, I was so bored.

You are not alone, Libbie. And I know how you feel as though no one else seems to get how annoying this series is; since I have endured many of my GR friends going gaga for Barrons and fangirling all over him. I don't understand what's so attractive about this guy and I don't like him, but comparing with Mac, Barrons looks pretty damn much like a saint.

I keep waiting for Mac to grow the fxxk up and become less selfish, but it never happens.]

I keep waiting for KMM to offer up some answer to the 9083986681011 questions she had thrown at us, but so far she offered hardly anything.

I keep waiting for KMM to write something impressive and surprising, but instead (view spoiler)

message 29: by Finn (last edited Nov 18, 2015 11:58PM) (new)

Finn Yeah I love the series but only because of Barrons. Mac is annoying and really if it wasnt for Barrons I dont think I would bother. Oh, and Vlane is scum.

message 30: by Wanda (new)

Wanda I loved it and yes I agree about what you said but those things kept it in a real world and tugged at your emotions good and bad.

message 31: by Fiorela (new)

Fiorela I didn't like it, although I love Barrons, I couldn't care less of MacKayla UGH!. The series have a great world building and a lot of interesting characters, so kudos for that but otherwise I don't know what is all the fuss about them.

message 32: by Solaris (new)

Solaris I understand disliking a book series--and I really wanted to like this book series. I'm finishing the series out of curiosity, and there are plenty of parts of this story that I do enjoy, but I can't get past despising Barrons. I don't know what I'm missing, but I don't tolerate his violence and cruelty, etc. I understand he's got complex layers, but the good things he's done? I'll keep reading to see if he can be redeemed in my eyes. Someone somewhere (I think in a review) mentioned that Barrons doesn't cross any lines in terms of violence, but.... bullshit. Slamming anyone into a wall, and putting hands around throats, certainly does cross lines. Wake up. I am also getting irritated with Mac, so I understand that too although I still like her character for the most part. I will keep reading this series, and hope for a pleasant turnaround, as 2/3 through Book 4 is not lookin' too hot. Thx!

Took the words right out of my mouth. I honestly don't get why everyone is so crazy about Barrons. Rape is not okay no matter how glamorous the men are!!

Too true! But it seems like if the character is pretty all is forgiven (see: Barrons' abusive behavior, his taking sexual advantage of Mac when she couldn't consent, etc). I struggled through Iced because I'd hoped he'd die and stay dead but alas, twas not to be. :/ And Ryodan is WORSE than Barrons or V'lane. The only male character supporting character (besides the Highlander cameos, I guess, since they never raped/tortured/etc/ anyone the one Barrons, V'lane and Ryodan did, and Ryodan's victim was a kid, making him even ickier) who wasn't a total tool was Mac's adoptive father. IIRC he had standards and if he knew how Barrons treated his child... he'd be horrified at best.

message 35: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Love Love Love this series and I'm 47. As they say, to each his/her own. Stop hating. All books are to be loved by whomever they speak to. I love fiction knowing it's NOT real. The characters were interesting and different and I loved the ride.

message 36: by Jean-ann (new)

Jean-ann Stump Actually you are not the only one who hates this series. I don't mean to disparage those who do enjoy these books. Everyone has the right to read what they like and gush about it. We don't all have to like the same things. I do not like this series though. I am currently trying to reread the first few for a book group and it is hard going.

I think that my biggest problem is that I cannot empathise with the main character. I have never lost a sibling or lost anyone to violence and I can see how that could strongly affect someone. However, there really isn't enough about the relationship between MacKayla and her sister to make me understand the devotion she has. I think that Moning should have spent a little more time on developing that relationship. Even if she did it through flashbacks that would have developed Mckayla's character a little more and made me like her.

I can't stand Barons either. He is just cruel for no apparent reason. From reading reviews I realize that this is explained in later books but I don't have the patience to get through all of the cruelty to find out.

Another problem I have with these books is that I don't really get a feeling for what Ireland is like in the books. I feel that an author should be very familiar with a location if they set a book there.

I was disappointed with the action scenes as well. They did not draw me in and I did not care if the characters survived.

This just is not my kind of series.

message 37: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Messier I read books 1-5 of the fever series, and I fully plan on stopping there. It was meant to only have 5 books, idk why she kept going because the ending of Shadowfever had me feeling fulfilled and at peace with the characters.

Another thing... My name is Danielle so when I saw Dannys name was Danielle I was like wooo my name is in the book! But then... She opened her mouth. I didn't care for her character at all, I felt her being so young in comparison to the rest of the cast wasn't well played out and I found myself skimming through her parts of the books. I cannot even imagine reading an entire book dedicated to her... annoying behavior. No thank you.

Smart move. KMM wrote Iced as if she was writing a romance with consenting adults. But Dani was STILL 14, Ryodan's much older, and Christian's still fighting the Unseelie Prince thing. I don't remember sex (thank god), but there was still unnecessary sexualization of Dani and Ryodan was doing fun things like breaking her fingers. But he's supposed to be the one she ends up with. ...It was gross.
