Judging by the parrot on the cover, I thought this book was about pirates or Jimmy Buffett, but it turns out to be a Faustian tale where someone is certain to end up ruing the day he ever made those wishes!

And three cheers for the return of Rincewind and Luggage!

Cheer! Cheer! Cheer!

Oooo! Time for a new Discworld book!

Michael Clemens (mpclemens) I read this one in advance, and I have to say... it's not my favorite. Coming right on the heels of Guards! Guards!, this one is far weaker, in my opinion.

Spoilery stuff follows: (view spoiler)

Mathew Smith | 686 comments A new book - aaagh. I completely forgot it was a new month (nothing personal against November mind you).

Is anyone going to have trouble getting this month's book?

Good luck with NaNoWriMo, Michael.

Gads. Forgot to look. Hang on.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 510 comments What an absolutely awful cover on this edition.

I've got a first edition paperback (UK) here, with a Josh kirkby cover. Much better....

Have to agree, Michael. Interesting Times is a much better book...

It's on it's way.

Mathew Smith | 686 comments My library does not have it...wtf?

I'll have to use google books. At least I'll get most of the story.

Ever try google books?

I hope, looking at how it works, or is supposed to work, that you won't be able to get that much.

$6.99 as a Kindle. Also, check your library's digital collection (Overdrive). At least one of the libraries I use has it digitally.

I'm about halfway through. So far, I like it more than Pyramids, but I have to say - I REALLY HATE the parrot!

message 13: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 510 comments Is that HATE in a good way? Or not...

Still waiting for mine to come from the library.

Carol (mansonville) Also still waiting for my copy. Should get it this tomorrow night.....

Got it and started it! I already like the parrot. I sympathize with all his "wossnames" as I find my speech these days all too frequently includes "thingummy" and "whatsis."

I wanted him to choke on his "wossnames." Maybe I just don't like being reminded of my own forgetfulness.

message 18: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 510 comments I liked the use of 'wossname', Melki. I've caught myself using it since rereading.....

message 19: by Carol (new)

Carol (mansonville) Hey! I've just received the first edition illustrated version! It's amazing. I'm going to enjoy this one, and yes, Rincewind's coming back (and love the pictures of death with his egg-timers). Such a nice bee-keeping fellow, that death -- too bad about the mischievous bees floating about his skull!

I found out about the illustrated version too late.
THAT'S the one I wish I'd bought!

This edition is beautiful! I really loved it and found that it added so much to the story. It's a quick read, and a very funny book with all kinds of connections to different kinds of literature.

I'm lucky that my friends bought all the first editions and are willing to lend them to me. It's neat to discover a series like this so many years later.
