This lively discussion rn.

Has anyone seen the original 70s cartoon btw? I love it because it has the tunes to all of the songs in the book. I will probably never accept the new melodies made up for the songs for Jackson's version because I've grown up singing the other ones. I wonder if they're going to do all the songs for the movies or just the one we saw in the preview. Praying they go for all of it tbh I'm here for a musical, lol.

This is my book read for December. So I'll join this discussion in a month.

RIP this discussion lol

Sally (kanoe) | 12 comments I'll start this soon, lol. By the way, I want to buy The Lord of the Rings, but don't know which edition to get. Any recommendations? I don't mind either hardcover or paperback, I just don't want one of those editions that puts all 3 books into one huge ass dictionary sized book. :P

I say just get a mass market paperback box set that has all 4 books, it will be cheaper and lighter.

Here's a paperback box set they just re-released for the movies. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/jrr-t...

Here's the other one they had out for a while, and probably the one you can pick up at the cheapest price: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/tolki...

Here's another paperback box set: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-l...

Here's a paperback box set with just the trilogy: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/lord-...

And here's a hardcover trilogy box set: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-l...

Just make sure you don't get the mass market paperback size, mine fell apart

I like the ones that were just made to match the Hobbit 75th anniversary, I bought the Hobbit one and I'm thinking of getting the LotR ones to match, they've got nice covers and they're light and small and a good font size.

Sally (kanoe) | 12 comments Thanks so much guys! I will probably get the 75th anniversary one. The covers are lovely.

Stephanie LGW (xstephanielgwx) | 26 comments I wonder if my "we jammed all the LOTR books into one massive paperback" has the Hobbit in it too...I suppose I should actually unpack my boxes of books to find out. (And, we actually own a DVD copy of the cartoon!)

Jelly i'm not enjoying this book at all. probably going to drop it.

oh noooooo why not?

Jelly it's just not my cup of tea! i'm finding it pretty repetitive. i wish i had read it when i was a kid as i probably would have liked it more.

Regency (egalitarianmuse) | 1 comments I actually remember loving The Hobbit more than LOTR. Maybe because there wasn't quite SO much detail poured into the story. Every time I've tried to read the trilogy, I never get any farther than the Two Towers.

Massielita | 4 comments My first time reading this and I'm loving it. It's been on my to-read list for years so I'm glad it's November's book.

Relevant: this article was in my local newspaper this Sunday

Z (ladybellatrix) I actually enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. I gave up on LOTR half way through TTT so I was weary that I would get bored by this one too, but I guess because this one is shorter and moves quicker and I've found it a lot more enjoyable.

Wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but definitely have fun.

Trisha I loved this novel and have read it multiple times! I think that it's one of those classics whose characters will stand the test of time. I mean, seriously, EVERYONE knows who Gandalf is! :-)

Amy B (blackicebooks) | 51 comments I'm so pissed, I searched up and down for one of our (several) copies of The Hobbit...they've scattered to the four winds, tbh. I think there's a copy somewhere in our moving boxes, ugh.

I just saw the movie! I severely need to pick it up and read it again because so much I was like wait was that in there was that in there? I'm really glad they did some nods to the songs because I know they can't make it a musical like the book practically is (though I was kinda sad that Fifteen Birds in Five Fir Trees didn't make the cut haha)

I really liked it tho!

I think that I like LotR better though, but it was still very good and felt appropriate and I think once we have all three movies it will make for a very nice collection.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw the movie this morning. I really liked it too. I'm halfway through the book so some changes I recognized, others I didn't. I can't wait to see the remaining two parts. I'm definitely going to read The Simarillion in 2013 though. It's been sitting on my bookshelf long enough. :)

Trisha I am very curious to see the movie. I understand making a trilogy out of a ...trilogy, but I'm not sure how you make a trilogy out of a book that you can finish in a weekend??

Was the Azog an actual conflict with Thorin, though, like if it's all the way in the appendix of ROTK?

K (kryswinsley) | 2 comments My little sis, she's 6, and I just finished it. She loved it, I liked it a lot but I missed the epic-ness of LOTR. Can't wait to see the movie now (although 9ish hours for this one book is gonna be rough).

Fran (narflet) | 36 comments Late to the party, but re: the Azog book/film thing. In the Appendices there's a section about the Dwarves history and the stuff that's relevant to The Hobbit is this:

Thorin's grandfather (Thror) goes a bit potty post-Smaug invasion/exile and goes wandering with a friend and eventually wanders into Moria. Bad plan. His friend stays outside, 'cos he was scared, and waits and then Azog comes out and throws Thror's mutilated head out (having butchered him) and tells his friend to go back to the rest of the dwarves and say don't try coming in or they'll just end up like Thror, and that Moria belongs to the orcs now. That's why Azog gets the name 'the defiler'.

Thorin's dad (Thrain) get pissed, obviously, and musters loads of dwarves together and wages war on the goblins/orcs to avenge Thrain's death. Ends up in a big battle outside Moria, which is where Thorin earns the name 'Oakensheield', because of his improvised Oak branch shield, and where Dain (who is mentioned in the film very briefly, and who you'll meet probably only in the very last film) kills Azog.
You can read all about that battle here: http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Battle...

It's Azog's son, Bolg, who shows up in The Hobbit at the Battle of Five Armies.

So, if you've seen the film you'll know how the film plot differs (quite a lot) from the actual history in the Appendices. It'd recommend reading the stuff in the Appendices, it's pretty short and worth reading if you want to flesh out your knowledge.

Movie spoiler: (view spoiler)

Maria (deepfriedhoney) | 16 comments I just now finished the reread! I cannot wait to see Beorn on screen. I hope he's hot. And I hope they remember that he looks down at Gandalf he's so huge.

message 31: by Fran (new) - added it

Fran (narflet) | 36 comments Based on this picture I think they've got the huge thing covered! That's from artwork that was released when the films were still 2 films (i.e. it is official, not fan-made).

This is the actor playing Beorn.

Maria (deepfriedhoney) | 16 comments I've seen the bear photo; here's hoping he's that big in man form too! And lol I thought that actor was the new probation worker on misfits for a minute there.
