Consider the following quote:

“If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.”

1.) Paragraph 1: What does Arnold mean when he says this? Who might he be referring to? Why? This should be 6-8 sentences MINIMUM!

2.) Paragraph 2: Describe a moment/incident from your life that relates to this quote. This should be 6-8 sentences MINIMUM!

Ben Friedman | 7 comments In the non-fiction novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. By Sherman Alexie. The main character Arnold a 14 year old Native American boy growing up on the Spokan Indian reservation has battled many things in his life. Such as bullying and random spasms and the fact that he looks nothing alike the normal person. But he is still learning how to deal with his new school Reardon. Arnold left the reservation school due to the old and bad teacher and even older and worst books. In the book Arnold tells Penelope is crunch that “If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.” What Arnold means when he says that is. If you allow someone to help you and show you things it can an amazing things for ones life. When Arnold tells Peopnelope this he means that if she allows people to talk to her and try to help her with her problems her life maybe easier and less stressful for her in the future.
There have been many times I can remember where if I where to have let someone talk to me it could have been pretty dam amazing. I can recall one time where I was nerviest about riding my new dirt bike and I did not want to listen to anyone about how to ride it or anything about it. I was trying to be a big shoot knows it all. And time after time I was unable to get the bike started and when I did get it up and running. I was not stuffiest enough to ride it. When I finally felt although it was impossible for me to do it on my own I gave in and with much embarrassment call my mom over. When she came over she pointed out the simplest thing to me I could have been riding for an hour at that point but I was too stubborn to allow her to show me. But as I said before I allowed her to talk to me and I go it right. This little story shows that if you do allow someone to teach you it can be pretty dam amazing.

Monica | 14 comments In the realistic fiction book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, Arnold, a 14-year old Native American that grew up on the Spokane reservation has gone through many things, good and bad. In this quote, "If you let people in your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing." I think Arnold is saying that people's life can't be successful without someone's company to help you go through it. If you let someone, even a stranger help you, you probably will gain lots of pieces of hope that will make life an enjoyable moment to treasure. In this book, lots of people actually influenced Arnold. But the most important person is Gordy. Gordy, a white kid, and the class geek, never thought much of Arnold. Further in the book, Arnold decided to realize that he and Gordy have a lot in common. He decided to become Gordy's friend. Then as the days passed, Gordy began advising Arnold in what to do in his life. Another person that made Arnold really improve his life a little bit, is Penelope. She actually made him feel popular by dating him. Even Roger the guy that he punched in the face on the first day of high school had actually began to respect him.

An incident in my life that is somewhat related to this quote happened at school. It was in seventh grade and I was in math class. We had a big test on the unit we were studying on and there was a question on it that I completely didn't know how to do. Knowing that this is a test and I couldn't cheat or leave the paper blank, I guessed and put my very best educated guess. After I took the test, I felt a deep pit in my stomach. What if I failed that test? That would be very shameful. I took up all my courage and went to my math teacher after school. I asked her to please let me retake the test and she willingly accepted my request. I felt happy and relieved, knowing that there's somebody at school that would help my life turn into a fantastic place to learn from.

Matthew | 11 comments In the realistic fiction, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, the main character Arnold is going through a lot. In the quote "If you let people into your life a litttle bit, they can be pretty amazing." Arnold means that if you listen to people and let them become part of your life, you can learn something from them. He has let a lot of different people into his life and its helping him become a better person. For example, in the beginning of the book, Rowdy was a big influence to Arnold. They had a food friendship until Arnold changed schools. At Arnold's new school, Gordy came into Arnolds life and gave him advice that helped Arnold become a better person. Penelope is another example of this quote because she became Arnold's girlfriend and that made him feel better about himself. Arnold also gave Penelope advice to help her life by telling her that quote.

There are many times in my life where I have let people into my life a little bit and they turn out to be damn amazing. I remember when my newphew Ryan was born. The first time I held him, I felt special. When I see him, I feel more responsible when I help out with him. I feel more grown up now. Another example is when I asked my Aunt for help for a quiz. She helped me study all night and she was a big help. After all our hard work i got a 90.

In the realistic fiction book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, the protagonist Arnold is a Native American teen that is usually lonely because of his appearance. Arnold is a hopeful child different from the other kids on his tribe where they don't care about their future. Arnold's ladder of success is missing something and it is his social life. Arnold in the tribe school gets teased for his looks. After Arnold gets mad of the poor education there, he switched to Reardan. At Reardan, he doesn't get teased, but he does not make new friends. Soon, Arnold started to tell others more about his life and it was surprising news to him. Arnold at one point said, “If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.” The quote shows how Arnold realized something special in his life. I think this refers to when Arnold told his love about how poor he was. It was hard to tell Arnold's love Penelope that he was actually poor the whole time, but he finally told her and it changed his everyday life. He started to ride homes and tons more support by others. He realized how telling others about his life can change so much to amaze you.

The quote does not only happen to Arnold, but it happens to everyone else too including me. Once in 6th grade, my class was assigned an essay and we had about two week to do it. I was very confused about what to do and I had trouble for the past first week. No one tried to help me on the first day. It was very embarrassing to tell others so I kept it a secret. After the first week, I had nothing done and I couldn't let myself down so I told my teacher what happened. She helped me a lot afterwards. It was hard to tell her because it was embarrassing, but I did it to reveal some amazing news. I realized how telling others about life a little can lead you to amazing things.

Elva C. | 13 comments In the realistic fiction novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, the main character is Arnold. He is a 14 year old boy who is a Spokane Native American who lives in the rez. Arnold transferred to a school called Rearden, which is a school full of white people. Arnold will have a hard time fitting in since he will be the only Native American in the school, other than the school mascot that is also an Indian. At first, Arnold was an outcast and was not payed attention to. After, when he started to date Penelope, his crush, things changed for him. He became popular. He was also being noticed and payed attention to. The quote, "If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing." refers to Arnold. This quote means that you should open up a bit. In the book, Arnold didn't really open up to people because he thinks that they will make fun of him. The people at Rearden thinks that Native Americans have money because they work at casinos, but Arnold's parents didn't. Arnold is poor, but he didn't want to admit that because if he told Penelope that he is poor, he is afraid that she might break up with him. Also, if Roger finds out that he is poor, Arnold thinks that he wouldn't be his friend anymore since he is poor.

I can also relate to this quote because, in my life, I have come across the same thing. When I was in kindergarten, I have just came to back to America. I didn't know any english, so I had a hard time fitting in with the other students. I would misbehave in class cause I wouldn't know what I did wrong because I couldn't understand what they were talking about. I would be isolated from the other classmates and would be alone a lot. When I finally opened up and let other people in my life, I started to learn more because they would teach me what to do and I learned more. I felt better that way too.

I had a moment like this but a little different. It was the first time I met my uncle Frank and I never heard of him until I met him and I realized how much I liked him and wish that I had met him wat before.

Michael Vu | 9 comments in the realistic fiction novel The Absolutely true diary of a part time indian by sherman alexie when arnold says “If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.” he may mean that if you have alot of problems in life most people hold it in and keep it all to themselfs. but arnolds means that if you talk to someone that can help you with your problems they can do alot. when arnold got to reardan he was all alone and poor and had no friends to talk too at all. when he told roger that he was poor he helped him gave him money and covered him over for the dinner.

i can relate this in my life becuase in my house i have problems with me and my mom (sill on going) and so far i have only told one person and he helped with alot and easyed alot of hardships.

Kailey | 7 comments In the realistic fiction book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, Arnold, a 14-year old Native American that grew up on the Spokane reservation has gone through many things, good and bad. In this quote, "If you let people in your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing." Arnold is referring to Roger. I know this because Arnold had punched Roger in the face in the beginning of the school year. But later Roger lends him money and drives him home from school on some days. He wasn't expecting this from what he did to him so Roger is who Arnold is referring to.

One moment in my life that I can relate to this is in the second grade. I had been sitting with my Sulema we had been friends since kindergarten. We decided to sit next to this one girl who was friendly but didn't know a lot of people. Her name was Joanne, and after a while of hanging out with her we all became friends. We were all such good friends and our parents started talking to each other. After that we did everything together, went to each others birthday parties, we were insepraple. All until MIDDLE SCHOOL.

Essam Alhumoz | 7 comments In the realistic fiction novel "The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie Arnold is the main character. Arnold is a 14 year old Native American boy who lives on the Spokane reservation, but Arnold is not the other kids on the reservation he has a big head. Arnold used to go to the school on the reservation, but he soon found out that if he stays on the reservation he will not have such a good future because of the education treatments on the reservation. When Arnold transfers to the school outside of the reservation(Rearden) he is under a lot of pressure. Arnold finds himself crushing on a girl named Penelope who he thinks is absolutely perfect, but he soon finds out that use has many problems as well but is to afraid to open up. "If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing" I think th quote can apply to Arnold as well because when he lets Mr. P into his life he finds out that he will have no future in the reservation.

This quote can apply to my life as well because when i was in grade 7 i was a 90+ student, but when i started the 3rd trimester i started to slip a little bit, because of some of the problems i was having at home. I didn't find anyone to talk to, exempt for my one friend from my old school in Morocco. And trust when i started talking to him i couldn't stop it just felt so good to let everything off of your chest. I soon realized that i wasn't the only one who was having problems. So this quote can also show that if you open up you may just find out that your not the only one going through these conflicts.

Trinity Burgos | 12 comments In the realistic fiction novel by Sherman Alexie The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian the main character in the book 14 year old Arnold struggles through many things inside his life living on a spokane reservation. Including being bullied many times, and not feeling appreciated in life. While Arnold had spent a good amount of time with the ''populer kids'' including his crush penelope. He began to notice some things that he hasn't been paying attention to in his life. Like being able to speak to other people and notice that not all the people he was talking to always has some racist thing to say about him. Which most explains this quote ''if you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.''This quote sates that sometimes if you bring more people inside your social life, you might be able to get to meet new personality's and it might make you feel better in life and make you feel appreaciated in life.

One moment in my life that somewhat relates to Arnolds quote is when I was joing a chorus group. I remember being afraid of joining the group because I thought everybody would judje me because my voice wasn't good enough. At, one moment I felt really nervous because I was getting ready to audition right after this girl with a beautiful voice and i felt I would never be able to compare to her. I also felt that if I asked anybody for help they would think I wasn't really prepared. Then, one girl that was already inside of the chorus she told me that im going to do just fine and that I shoudn't worry to much. I felt much more confident and thought that there's always somebody there for me when im in need.

Justin Yu | 10 comments In the Realistic Fiction novel, Th Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, Arnold says "If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing." When Arnold stated this line/quote, he basically means that if you tell people about yourself, maybe they will accept you for who you are. But another course would be you lied to them or they can't accept you because of this and that. But since Penelope asked, "Are you poor?" She told Roger and he thinks that Roger is going to use that and take advantage of him. However he didn't. This is why I think he said, "If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing. He is referring to the Reardan kids.

Plus I can relate to Arnold because when I was in 6th grade, I was bullied in the middle of winter. 2 other boys were jumping on top of me and one of them was spitting om me which was gross. After the incident, during math, Mr.Kruger notice I had a sad face on and he called the guidance counselor, Ms. Schwenzer, and she asked me to tell what happened. I told her about how kids were spitting on me. She instantly knew that this had to be reported to the Dean. We spoke and filled out incident reports. After he finished they boys had detention and he also called up my mom. Back when it was in elementary school, we usually dealt with these problems with ourselves. Teachers was never an option but now I finally told someone about it and it was nice to get something off my chest

Melanie M. (MissMello) | 6 comments In the realistic fiction novel,The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, By Sherman Alexie Arnold says " If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing." What arnold means by this is if you let a certain person get into your life a little bit they can change your life in a good way. They can be pretty damn amazing just like Arnold said. I think Arnold might be reffering to is Gordy the class geek; the one who is IN LOVE with computers and just LOVES to read. They became friends and Gordy taught him a few things in life. Told him to move on in life and more, But mostly i think Penelope is who Arnold is reffering to also because they go out and when she found out he was poor she didnt care, she didnt spread rumors and tell people he was poor she kept it between him and her and Roger.

I can relate to Arnold beacuse in the 7th grade I didnt do so well in school nor in life. I wouldnt get good grades at all and i didnt really let my sister into my life but i did in the 7th grade a little bit and me and her had a talk about school and life and she really influenced me that day and she was Pretty damn amazing.

Sara | 3 comments In the realistic fiction novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian By Sherman Alexie. The quote "If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing" Arnold is probably trying to say that you have to try to take chances sometimes and open up a little bit. I think Arnold might be referring to like Roger and Penelope because at first he didn't think Roger would become his friend and thought he was a snobby white kid. Now that he's friend's with Penelope he probably realized that just because she said something about his nickname she can still be there for him, and Roger doesn't care wether Arnold is poor or not since he's always gonna be there for him. The reason why Arnold thinks he should open up a little is because he can't always judge people on the way they look or act once or twice. Since everyone changes and can be there for you no matter what because they can't dislike you forever.

I can relate to Arnold because i judged someone based on how they look. Then i actually tried talking to them one time and they happened to become my friend and now we actually talk all the time and were good friends and became closer. Now that we've become friends, i don't judge that many people as much as i use too. Because i actually started to open my life up a little and let people talk to me and get to know me better. Ever since that i pretty much talk to alot of people and she was really nice to me and was always there for me aswell just like when Roger was there for Arnold.
