I've added a few online books to GR, but only librarians can add links. If any of your are librarians and would like to help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

message 2: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments I tried to become a librarian so I can edit my own books on here but they never got back to me

message 3: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
Yeah, I applied a few days ago but still no response. I gave in and put the links in the descriptions. Must be extra annoying if you're an author and it's your own stuff you need to edit.

message 4: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Post the books in here and I'll fix the links for you.

Sonny has a pet librarian. Me. Refresh my memory, dude, how did that happen again?

Keep bitching at people about the librarian thing, message moderators etc. It took a while to get anyone's attention when I applied.

message 5: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments Because you felt sorry for me since I am foolish blond person! Also, you lovez me.

Where do I bitch at people? In a forum or do I message someone?

message 6: by LenaLena (last edited Nov 11, 2012 08:44PM) (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments I do lovez you, but I think you promised to write me porn.

IIRC I went to the goodreads feedback group and started messaging moderators. Also, I had Moss harass someone in the goodreads librarians group as well.

message 7: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
I'm not sure I'm very good at harassment! Problem, problem.

Okay things:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16...
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16...

Just move the links to the proper places if you don't mind. Thanks :)

message 8: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments The first two books claim to have Jesse Hajicek as author, but I don't think that's correct? I'll fix the authors, unless I'm missing something?

Your first book is a webcomic that has no published volumes. Goodreads doesn't want those in the database. I know, because people have bitched at me for adding webcomis. We can just play dumb and leave it up and hope they don't see it. I'm just saying, don't be surprised if it vanishes one day.

message 9: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments They've actually taken webcomics down?

message 10: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
Thanks!

They are by him, he just goes by various different usernames in different places.

If goodreads doesn't want unpublished webcomics, what about online fiction? Seems like it's essentially the same deal. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if they felt the same way about those, but if they do I hope they don't go so far as to try and crack down on it. There's some great unpublished stuff.

message 11: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments ICoS has been up for a few years and they haven't messed with it. Also I think there's fanfiction on here too

message 12: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
Yeah, I've seen some fanfic too.

Oh, and Marleen, the real name of the artist who does Metanoia is Sarah Cloutier. I forgot to put that in.

message 13: by LenaLena (new)

Eh. I AM missing something. Chartreuse and Jumping Jack Flash are both pseudonyms for Jesse Hajicek? Should we list them under the pseudonyms or not?

Yes, they've taken webcomics down: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

I added Minor Acts of Heroism back in since they're 'published', but Tripping Over You has been removed. There is a list in the Freeloaders that has potential removals listed:

message 14: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
Hmm... hard to say whether to include pseudonyms, and if yes which. Probably not Chartreuse, because that's only really associated with Metanoia and it's not something he goes by anymore. Maybe JumpingJackFlash? He uses that for both Fictionpress and I think AO3, so more people might know his screen name than his real name in certain places.

Hopefully Metanoia manages to fly under their radar.

message 15: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments wooow. people go hard on shit for no reason. i guess everyone needs a hobby.

message 16: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Do these authors want their real names used or are they using pseudonyms because they don't?

A lot of people on goodreads really don't like the online fiction being added, but the official rule is you can add it, unless it's a WIP. Then you can't. As you can see in the discussion I linked above I really, really don't agree, but I don't make the rules.

BTW, the Freeloaders group I mentioned is collecting all free m/m publications. We have separate threads for fanfiction and webcomics and wips that aren't allowed in the database. Plus 300+ online books that are in the database. Anyone can add books. Join us!

message 17: by LenaLena (last edited Nov 11, 2012 09:31PM) (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Maybe leave the listings under the pseudonym and mention in the description who the author is? What you're going to get is someone clicking the link, saying 'hey, but the author is Chartreuse, it says so right here' and then they go in and 'fix' it.

I'll just go ahead and leave the pseudonyms I put in. But feel free to go back in and change it back if you want to.

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments I tried to join for 5 minutes but this new awful Chrome extension prevented me from clicking the join button, and I was super blond and it took me a long time to figure out that I could disable it. it's hard being me.

message 19: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments Wait, so technically since Fade is a WIP it can be taken off?

message 20: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
You don't make the rules, you just quietly don't enforce them :)

One of Jesse's books is published under his real name, so there's definitely no issue there. Rah also goes by a variety of usernames on other sites, but I think that's just because that's what's done on most websites. Her real name is listed on her Deviantart.

message 21: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
I think it would be best to have the author under his actual name, because then it will be listed with his other projects.

message 22: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Potatoe wrote: "You don't make the rules, you just quietly don't enforce them :)"

That's right. :P And I break them whenever I think no one will notice. I happen to love WIPs. And webcomics.

Sonny wrote: "Wait, so technically since Fade is a WIP it can be taken off?"

Yes, it can. They are going to need a super-librarian to do it, because so many people have linked to it, but they can take it down. Of course, I would put it right back up and play dumb until you and Ais finish it.

message 23: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments well it will be finished in 2 months so fuckers better leave it alone until then!

message 24: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Potatoe wrote: "I think it would be best to have the author under his actual name, because then it will be listed with his other projects."

Alright, I'll fix that then. Just don't be surprised if someone else 'fixes' it back some day.

Now you need to join the Freeloaders too, Potatoe. I've only read Snowfall so I wouldn't know how to shelf the other books you added.

message 25: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
I shall guard it fiercely.

And okay I'll join the group. Is "Marleen told me to" a good reason for joining? Too late if it's not.

message 26: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments It's an excellent reason. Especially since I'm the one letting you in!

Is admitting that something is a wip by putting it on the wip shelf in this group asking for trouble?

message 28: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments Are you a mod? If you are you should add me

message 29: by R.A., Overlord (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
Okay, so, what's your definition of 'fantasy' within the group? Are m/m webcomics classed as 'slash'? Actually that shelf is really sparsely populated, why is that?

message 30: by LenaLena (last edited Nov 11, 2012 10:05PM) (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Potatoe wrote: "Is admitting that something is a wip by putting it on the wip shelf in this group asking for trouble?"

We haven't had any problems with it yet. We're a private group and the people who have problems with wips are seemingly not interested in joining a group about free homo books. Probably because they don't consider free online books real books either and want nothing to do with us.

Sonny: I am. I already added you.

Also, if it's a series with completed books and wip books, do I put wip? Also do I add the whole series or just the first book in the series?

message 32: by Santino (new)

Santino Hassell (santino_hassell) | 19 comments HAHAHA free homo books. that was the best.

i contribute so much to all conversations.

What does gfy mean? Why do just a few authors get tags?

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Sonny wrote: "HAHAHA free homo books. that was the best.

It's a good thing you're pretty. And that you write porn.

Potatoe: People put stuff where they want. If you don't agree, you are free to add the shelves you like. So someone added a Slash shelf at some point, but I personally don't put anything on it because I figure it's all slash. But maybe that someone had a different definition?

Me, I put stuff on the fantasy shelf when it reminds me of all the fantasy books I've read, but then with more gay sex. Of course, elves are a dead ringer for the fantasy shelf too. Most alternate history books end up there too.

If the completed books of an ongoing series are separate database entries, then those are not wips. Like Evenfall and Daron's Guitar Chronicles 1-3. Fade, OTOH, is a wip. If there is a database entry for the unfinished part, you can shelf that as a wip. If there isn't, there is a WIP thread in the Discussions that you can add unlisted WIPs in.

Ahh, okay, so it's alright to play it by feel? On the LJ group this group is based on we have a fuckton of rigid classification rules, so I'm used to a lot of structure. Leaves me floundering when things are freer.

Anyway, I've added some stuff that I liked a lot. Might add some more stuff. It's a good group :)

message 36: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Yeah, I don't have the time or inclination to be the shelf police. I honestly thought when I started the group it'd be me and maybe a dozen friends. If you want to organize the shelves better I'll make you moderator! :-P

message 37: by R.A., Overlord (last edited Nov 11, 2012 10:39PM) (new)

R.A. Armstrong (raarmstrong) | 88 comments Mod
Haha, no thanks, I'm not even classification police on my own community. I just went back and removed everything I'd added to the slash shelf. I had this sudden dawning horror when I realised that it was just like when people used to tag stuff with 'slash' and 'gay' on our comm. NO THAT'S WHAT THE COMMUNITY IS FOR WHY.

EDIT: Oh, and yes, that's actually what I thought when I started our LJ comm. I thought it'd pretty much just be me, but then... it wasn't.

Marleen, could you do me another librarian favour please?

This webcomic: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15...

It's an abandoned webcomic so it really shouldn't be on here in so many ways but that's not the point! The point is whoever added it did a poor job of it and it makes me sad.

Actual description:
A constable and a doctor meet one typical January night... and in the midst of murders and conspiracies, they form a bond that leads to things both wondrous and terrible.

And all my webcomic bookshelves would look way prettier if this was added for the cover: http://www.smackjeeves.com/images/upl...

Thank you :) Sorry to ask when it's not even something I added, but it's been bothering me. Odd one out :(

message 39: by LenaLena (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) | 13 comments Done!

And: it has a published (downloadable pdf) volume, so it qualifies.

Free PDF seems almost like it should be cheating! But I'm glad it'll be safe from deletion. Thanks for your help :)
