J?
Planning as in, when somebody posts, it takes a while to think up what you're going to post in response. (Well, some of us lesser mortals, anyway...:P ) We're working on some intrigue here!
Anybody who would be willing to help us solve the mystery of the strange case of the miscalculating analytical calculation engine, would be most welcome!
These threads are meant for all group members to participate in, so please, help us build a story, everyone!
Nice Ian, nice! Some people say more with less words.. :D Thanks for posting! For those uninitiated into another New Weird author, Jeff VanderMeer, this is the Martin Lake and Voss Bender mentioned in the fan-fic thread.

Hmmm. Ian, though it was a nice touch about "Symphonic Ambergris", I'm trying very hard to imagine earphones into a Victorian, Steampunk setting, such as the Bas-lag one, where even elycticity is driven with steam.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk
Trav hopes that her latest post was more descriptive of the Richard character, and would be to the satisfaction of any of his namesakes.Trav is wondering how she should describe the Ian character. Dignified and pharaohonic? Does he also go bare-torso-ed and with an impressive head-dress? Carrying a sceptre that he likes to wave around?
Don't forget to have a fight scene where he's grabbed by the uraeus!Using the homeric phrase "his steel-thewed majesty" in re: Richard would be in order soon.
And 'towering' might be a good description for him as well, eh? And everything he owns. Raised his towering sword menacingly, for instance.
LOL. I almost missed it, but it seems that "and removed his earphones" has now been replaced by :"and removed his iPiece."Hmm, you know, i suppose if you were a music-fan, you could always be re-made to have this little gramophone player strapped to your body somewhere, with these sort of earpieces that you can stick into your ears.
Richard wrote: "*snerk* That sounds like something we'll be seeing on Etsy soon."Now that would be fun, and a wonderful addition to any Steampunk enthusiast's collection!
Even more fun if Apple or Samsung or someone decided to make a little device that looks like a miniature gramophone, but that actually works, and plays MP3... :D
Hmm. Ok. I think we're going to have to go by avatar. So far, the author(s) of the Fan-fic have, with the exception of Trav (who i suppose could be a walking dolphin) taken people's avatar's at face value. This means that Ian is going to have a lean, stony appearance. :P
Once Trav reprimanded me for my anachronistic reference to headphones, I decided that Ian should instead be wearing an iPiece for reading purposes. Think of it as a steampunk monocle, which he had to remove so he could concentrate on listening instead of looking and reading. Sorry for the confusion.I haven't read the steampunk wiki yet.
Ian also has a recently acquired stony six-pack.
Ian wrote: "Once Trav reprimanded me for my anachronistic reference to headphones, I decided that Ian should instead be wearing an iPiece for reading purposes. Think of it as a steampunk monocle, which he had ..."Hmm, i might have to start including some Steampunk and New Weird material in this group area. As a basic rule, steampunk works with steam... :P ..and items tend to be made of metal, and it is sort of late Victorian (think: Industrial Revolution, and an era where science was viewed very romantically).
Have you read any Jules Verne? Sort of like that. Of course, Bas-lag is not 100% Steampunk, since Mieville subverts everything that he touches;- i think that it is part of his credo where fiction is concerned at the very least.
I also think that New Crubozon is probably rather dirtier than Steampunk in general, which tends to idealise instead of portraying the era it derives from realistically.

Please place your participatory posts to our little story here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
