It's not really about the plot.

St Fu What makes this book work (when it does) is it gets the psychology right. Danny's paranoia works as paranoia and isn't given some trivial justification and it arrives and leaves fluidly. The characters aren't superficial even if their understanding of themselves often is. What's wrong with it (best I can figure out) is that it ends too abruptly. It could end as it does, but not that quickly. It feels too unresolved, not because of hanging plot elements, but because the characters have more to express and won't get to do so. This is the opposite of goon squad in which nothing ever gets left unexpressed in some form or other.
