i didn't think the camps symbolized anything since it was all based on a true story, but i think it's an interesting topic in a literary sense.
looks like wiesel intended the concentration camps to stand for the general hurdle that everyone in life faces regarding faith. people easily lose faith when something bad happens, but, the only way to bring the dark night to an end is to maintain faith.

i think the symbolize that, when everyone is together, it is a make or break situation. think of the camp as a sheet of glass. only so much weight (jews)can go on it without breaking. the question is, 'will the glass break'?
