In honor of our discussion of making connections with literary allusions and reading poetry, choose a song that you think would fit the "soundtrack" of your book. This song could connect to a character, conflict, or big idea within a text. Make sure to summarize the song or identify the specific lyric that connects and then follow proper reading response format!

Please consult your rubric and models to ensure that you are doing your best work!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about (1-3 sentences)
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea that is properly introduced and punctuated (Arnold states, ".....")?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea (2-4 sentences)?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Bryan | 41 comments In Cynthia Kadohata's realistic fiction story, Kira-Kira, I think the soundtrack that would fit with the book would be Who says by Selena Gomez. Lynn, Katie Takeshima's sister taught her on how to say kira-kira which means glittering in japanese, she uses that word to describe everything she sees. like the sky is very kira-kira because of the color. "When I grew older, I used kira-kira to describe everything I liked: the sky, puppies, kittens, butterflies, colored Kleenex"(1). This quote shows that the soundtrack of Selena Gomez would fit it because they describe something of people or objects.

Andy Chen | 44 comments In Rick Riordan's fantasy novel, The Sea of Monsters, the soundtrack that would best fit with this book would be "The Final Countdown", by Europe. This would best fit this book because it shows how there is one last chance to reach your final goal. Percy had one last chance to face off against Lord Kronos, and compared to The Final Countdown, Percy had one more chance to fight Kronos, and if he won, Kronos dies and will form back in a hundred million years. If he lost, Kronos will rule the mortals and immortals. Chiron, Percy's old teacher and in charge of Camp Half Blood, once stated, "This is your very last chance to fight Kronos, and it will be a big one. You must test his weaknesses and strengths and tricks. He wins and he rules the universe, including gods, goddesses and half bloods and any other humans alive." This quote shows this soundtrack fits with this book because it is the final countdown and Percy's fight against Kronos is ticking, and has one more shot at defeating him and rescuing all mortals.

Karen (allergic2haters) | 37 comments Just as Long as We're Together by Judy Blume
In Judy Blume's realistic fiction Just As Long We're Together, the best soundtrack that would fit with this book is Friendship Song by Carbon Leaf. This song relates to the book when Stephanie really likes Alison and feels that Rachel is threatened when the two of them were best friends and now becomes a three beste friends. Towards the end of the book they are friends. "Hi... I'm Allison...I'm Stephanie..." Later in the book Allison meets Rachel. Rachel is Stepanie's best friend. This quotes states that the soundtack to Carbon Leaf would fit in this because it descibe how they met and just started to be friends on the first day of school. Therefore, the Cabon Leaf's soundtack fits in to the book Just as Long As We're Together by Judy Blume.

Corey | 43 comments In Rick Riordan's fantasy, The Lighting Thief, the sound track that will best fit this book is "Stronger" by Kanye West. Percy who is teenage boy is always getting into trouble finds out that he is a half-blood. He stays at camp half blood until he has to leave for a quest. After battling with ares the god war and Hades who is god of the underworld, he finds the lighting bolt that Zeus thought he stole and he returns it. "Wow you beat Ares and return the helm of darkness," His best friend Grover said. I think this quotes means that Percy has been in a lot life threatening battles, and came out alive and stronger then ever. People never fought Ares and return the helm of darkness and still be alive. I think the song "Stronger" shows for Percy that nothing is impossible and even though you been though a lot of battles, you can still make it though. Therefore i think that "Stronger" will fit the soundtrack of The Lighting Thief the best

Wesley | 50 comments In Christopher Paolini's fantasy novel, Eragon, a song that would best fit the book is "Somebody that I Used to Know" by Gotye. Eragon is a 15 year old boy with the responsibilities of a grown man. After hunting in the woods, he finds a stone. He brings it to a trader and they tell him it was created from magic. Then after a couple of days, Eragon hears noises from the mysterious rock, seconds later a dragon hatches from the rock which is actually an egg. In a few days, she becomes a full grown dragon. With this new discovery, the King Galbatorix sent his servants the Ra'zac to find the egg. They burn down the village and his uncle who has been like Eragon's father dies. "Garrow is gone forever!"(92) and in "He has cared for me"(76). This shows Eragon needs to forget about Garrow because it will affect how he will fight. "An eye for an eye would make the whole world blind." ~Mahatma Ghandi. This quote means how revenge will not solve anything, but hurt you even more. Therefore if the death of Garrow is remembered then Eragon's head would be clouded with anger. In Goyte's song, he also needs to forget about his ex-lover, this will only get him depressed. From these two examples, Not forgetting someone will lead to something bad like depression or anger which is not good. Therefore Goyte's song is perfect for Eragon's experience.

Jamilah B | 37 comments Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

In Laurie Halse Anderson's realistic fiction novel, Speak, the soundtrack that would best fit this book is "Not afraid" by Eminem. This soundtrack would best fit this novel because Melinda is a girl who in the beginning, is a shy girl who doesn't let her feelings out and is afraid to stand up for herself. But as you get deeper into the story, you find out that Melinda is not afraid to tell people how she really feels. If she doesn't like something, she will tell them "No." I have read this book in the past and someone does something to her that she doesn't like and she ends up really surprising that person when she tells them no. Melinda surprises that person because she doesn't normally speak to anyone except maybe Heather or Ivy. So she really shocked them when she spoke up for self. She was tired of everyone thinking she was soft so she finally opened her mouth and said something, even if it was a two letter word. She still spoke. " Melinda states "i said no"(195). This quote proves my idea because when Melinda said no the first time, she meant it and she wanted that person to understand what she said. So therefore Melinda is "Not Afraid" to say what she feels, and therefore the song that bests describes this novel is "Not afraid" by Eminem.

Gaby | 7 comments In my book Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan the soundtrack that reminds me of this book is " TNT " by AC/DC because in the book the protagonist is a very strong individual and so are his friends in the book . I feel like this song compares to my book because the book is very strong and the people are very powerful and are full of strength . This song represents power because of all them loud beats and screaming . " TNT I'm dynamite TNT watch me explode " this part of the song shows a powerful substance exploding. In the book the protagonist is almost like the "TNT" as if they were in the song.

Brandon | 13 comments In a ''Summer of Fear'' thriller novel by Lois Duncan I think the song that best describes the book is beat it by Michael Jackson.I think this cause in the book my main character (Rachel) she is scared of her cousin cause of what she thinks she did that summer.I compared this song to the book "Summer of Fear" cause like in Rachel is scared but yet try to tell and find out if it's true like in beat it the kid Michael Jackson is talking about is trying to be a hero.In the song he said "don't want to see no blood ,don'tbe a mocho man." I think that this quote means that don't do something you don't need to do.In other words don't be a big mocho man and get beat up and see some blood.

message 10: by Altamir III (new)

Altamir III III (longdeoking) | 27 comments In Sharon Draper book, Tears of a Tiger, a song that will best fit in this book is no lie by Drake and 2 Chainz because there was a car accident and police are involved in the school and neighborhoods and not just that, the protagonist, Andy, goes to theropy and you can`t lie on that too. Also with the others, nobody wants lies, they wanted the truth because they all wanted gossip and such. So that`s why I choose this song for this book. Plus, its a great song.

Elizabeth Sanchez | 14 comments In the novel Sticks and Stones by Beth Gooble the soundtrack that reminds me the most of this book is "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. "Every day is so wonderful, then suddenly, it's hard to breathe now and then, I get insecure from all the pain, I'm so ashamed." This quotes shows that Christina was feeling insecure and ashamed about her self and self wondered how something so good turned down. This relates to Beth Gooble's novel because it shows the amount of pain Jujube feels throughout the book, she was insecure and hurt because of all the hatred she got made up from rumors. As well, as everything being perfectly amazing in her life, to things crashing down. Jujube was made fun of because of a misconception in her relationship, though people believed it she started to as well. This caused her to end up being ashamed and insecure just like Christina Aguilera's song "Beautiful".

Kenjo | 41 comments In Ian o'Connor's biography, The Journey Of Derek Jeter, the soundtrack that would best fit this book would be, "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. Jeter is a young player that had been recently sent to the major leagues from Columbus because of a player who had been injured. He was striking out a lot and wasn't doing as good as he wished to. During his transfer to the major league, Jeter was asking himself, "Am I going to make the team?" This quote shows that the soundtrack would best fit because Jeter finally has a chance to prove himself that he's worthy of playing for the Yankees and that he can't waste it because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity as Eminem states in his soundtrack.

Gabby T. | 22 comments In markus zusak's historical fiction novel The Book Thief the song that would be in the soundtrack to this book is "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult. Lisel is a 14 year old girl living in germany on Himmel in the year 1993. She lives with her foster parents Rosa Hubermann and Hans Hubermans and is best friends with her neighbor Rudy Steiner. one day in 1993 their was warnings of a bombing so everyone was making thier way to the bomb shelter except for lisel which was in Hubermans basment. They all died except for her and were all taken by death(who is also the narrtor.) and she laters writes a story about it in a black book to herself and years later when death is ready to take her she isn't scared she simply asked it "Did you read it? she asked, but she did not look at me.Her eyes fixed to the words." meaning that she didn't really fear death when it came to her. simliar to the lyrics of "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Olystic Cult partically this part "came the last night of saddness and it was clear she couldn't go on the door was opened and the wind appeared the candles blew and then disappeard the curtains flew and then he appeared saying dont be afraid come on baby and she had no fear and ran to him." Saying that the women in this song Didn't death either like Lisel.

Ilijah A | 40 comments In Kate Carys novel Bloodline, a song that best describes the book is a song called "Hall of Fame" by the group named The Script featuring Will.I.Am. This song would best relate to the book because in the book, Bloodline is about a man named Private Smith who is in the war and the song "Hall of Fame" to me means that people are remembered just like the men who fought in the war. This song really makes me see a connection between the two. The quote in the book, "If I die out here, my lad will grow up never knowing his dad"(27). This quote was said by Private Smith. This quote relates to the song because he is saying how he might die in battle and how his son will never see his father. In the chorus of the song when he sings, You are standing in the Hall of Fame, the world is going to know your name. That is saying that people will always be remembered when they die and even if the father dies in battle he will still be remembered. Therefore, my opinion is this is a song that best describes my book Bloodline.

Zoe | 25 comments In Christopher Paolini's fantasy novel Eldest, a song that best describes the book is "Glad You Came" by The Wanted. I think this song best relates to the book because in the novel, the main character, Eragon, has to prepare for a war that is coming due to Galbotorix, because he wants to destroy the Varden. Eragon is sent to Ellesmera, a place where the elves live. He is taught how to use a lot of different spells, and how to fight better using a sword. The part of the song that I think would fit the book is "My universe will never be the same" because his life is different than other people because he is a dragon rider, and has more responsibility.

Yamil Cifuentes | 40 comments In R.L Stine's realistic fiction "The mask mutant" a song that best describes the book is "THRILLER" by Michael Jackson. I think that song could relate to this book because in The Mask Mutant, a comic book character came to life from Skipper's fictional comic book. And in the song, "THRILLER," a bunch of zombies came back to life. "uhh...weird...what's happening...Leave me alone?" This quote shows that they both saw somebody or something came to life. This quote also shows that they don't know what's happening and they try to run.
