After our conversation about theme (a lesson, moral or message about life that the writer wants to teach his/her reader), you need to determine a theme (or what lesson your author is trying to teach you) in your IR book. Make sure to follow the proper reading response format!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about (1-3 sentences)
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea that is properly introduced and punctuated (Arnold states, ".....")?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea (2-4 sentences)?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Ben Friedman | 25 comments In the book ‘’The Hate List.” By Jennifer Brown. A girl was there to witness something she never though she would see a shooting. I feel like the lesson the is trying to get across is do not bully. The reason for the whole mass killing of insolent people with the aception of a few bully’s. Is a few kids where bullying a boy. One day the boy got extremely upset nd open fired on a bunch of kids. I fell like the message the author is trying to relay is. Do not bully because if this child was not bullied many life’s cold have been saved and much pain could have never been felt.

Zoey is the going-to-be high pristess in her vampyre school, the house of night. But over the past few weeks, her friends have not been trusting her because of the several lies she had told them. On the other hand, Zoey's frenemies have returned along with her dead undead best friend. Their names, Aphrodite and Stevie Rae had told her about a very bad thing that is going to happen very soon in Zoey's life. Aphrodite has had visions lately, and she been foretold that Zoey will die two times, once of because all her friends left her, and another an invisible person had attacked her. Because of this, Zoey is ever in more danger at the moment. "I saw all of it happenning because you were dead, Zoey. Your death made it happen." (36.) This quote shows the dangerous things that would happen if Zoey died. Aphrodite is warning her that it might come true. This whole moment in the book proves a lesson. The lesson is that death may cause anything.

Matthew | 34 comments In the fiction book, "Hoops," by Walter Dean Myers, Myers is trying to teach us not to be cocky. In the book Lonnie Jackson is very cocky about how he plays basketball. One day his coach, Cal, beats him in one on one. Lonnie got mad because he didn't realize how good Cal was. In the book Lonnie says, "Ï don't need you to tell me how good my game is, you or no other wino." This shows his cockiness because he thinks he is so good. It also makes Lonnie look stupid because through his cockiness he takes his anger out on innocent people. Finally, it shows how mad Lonnie got when he was beat in basketball after he thought he was so good.

On draft day Derek Jeter got picked 6th overall and his goal was to be picked 5th overall but he then suddenly realized that was also very good because he then thought" some people don't get picked and i should be greatful that I even got picked."

Trinity Burgos | 31 comments In the Autobiography novel A Man Named Dave by Dave Pelzer, in the book Dave in the past has had many experiences as a child with the abuse of his mother, which had hauted him for mst of his life. Now that he's all grown up he's explaining telling the reader how it's like for him as a grown man instead of him as a child. Being a grown man now he still is going through many hard experiences in his life. Also, toward the end of the book he explains that even though he went through many difficult things in his life it didn't stop him from having hope to begin something new. He also explains how it's always good to forgive the people who have done bad things to you. Dave eplains,''if you learn anything from the past, is to hate no one. If you do, you'll become that person who did you wrong.''This quote states that it's never a good reason to hate someone because of what they've done in the past because at the end of day, they always have an explanation for everything it's never done to make your life miserable

Mark | 33 comments In the fantasy novel, The Maze Runner by James Dashner, the theme of the book so far, is you need a person to help you and guide you. Thomas, the protagonist, is stuck in a place called the Glade. Thomas has no memory of anything but the way of a simple life and his name. The Glade has a huge wall that protects the land but every morning the walls open up. Thomas has a friend named Chuck and he’s been in the Glade for three months now when he meets Thomas who just recently was mysteriously put in the Glade. Thomas knows zilch, he has no memory and Chuck helps him fit in the Glade. A quote from the book that proves the theme of the book. “Nice to meet you Thomas Chuck said. Don’t you worry; I’ll take care of you. I’ve been here a whole month, and I know the place inside and out. You can count on Chuck okay. This quote shows how you need a person to guide you in the Glade especially if it’s your first day. It shows that Chuck is looking out for Thomas because he is new and there is a lot to learn about the Glade. Also, Chuck is guiding Thomas because he knows what it’s like to be new to the Glade. He doesn’t want Thomas to have a difficult experience as he did.

In Robert Lipsyte's realistic fiction book "Yellow Flag", the protagonist is Kyle and he is a teen racecar driver and is very busy lately throughout the book so far. Kyle has a whole family of racing and so they are like a team. Recently in the book, Kyle and his brother Kris's team got new sponsors meaning new logos, paint job, and better engine. Kyle had been telling tons of other people and one day, he told Nicole about it. Kyle started off about the topic and then Nicole interrupted with her ignorance. She didn't know much about the racing and just tried to mess up Kyle about it. On page 51, " He'd felt it last night on the phone with Nicole, trying to explain how important this race was to the family. Talking about the new sponsors and the paint job and the better engine, he'd felt that cold flicker, but she had smothered it with he indifference, her ignorance, what he considered her selfishness. She didn't know what he was talking about and didn't seem to care." Soon, Kyle was tired of it and hung up. The author was trying to show that to not be selfish or jealous because it will cause others to leave u and ignore you. Kyle hung up because Nicole was acting in a behavior that made Kyle angry. Robert did it to show no one wants to hear someone be jealous.

Emily | 14 comments In the realistic fiction book Winter girls, by Laurie Halse Anderson the theme in my book is to always have hopes and always achieve them. Lia would not have hope for nothing ever since the death of Cassie because she never helped her. She had to hope big for her to achieve it, and be proud that she still believes and has hope even though Cassie is dead.
