As an effort to better organize and spice things up around here, we have Anna Bananas and Chimney as our new moderators! I'm so pleased to have them (^_^) Some of you guys may already be familiar with us from lurking around the threads, but in any event, let us properly introduce ourselves!

Kay Lotus the Red Queen
"My three utmost love is music, writing, and comic books. I listen to every and anything from Wu-tang to Black Sabbath to Disney musicals. I started recollecting comic books two years ago after a long hiatus from Hurricane Katrina washing away my previous collection. Now I'm back in full X-force =] I also enjoy manga, anime, and cosplaying. I'm not a hardcore gamer aside from Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Sims, and a few online trading card games. And chess, I love chess. Yes, I'm pretty much stuck in my 13-year old mind frame when it comes to gaming lol. My other fandom includes The Walking Dead, martial arts and horror films, electronics, and all kinds of cartoons. Through She-Geeks, I hope to read with you, watch tv shows with you, spaz and maybe even argue with you like any dork friend would do. Most importantly, let's have more fun to come!"

Anna Bananas the Mad Hatter
"Madam Bananas is a die-hard comics fan, genre reader, romance lover, and supporter of all things feminist and girly. Goodreads quickly became the place for her. She loves talking about her interests and passions and tends to get REALLY enthusiastic at times. Watch out for fireworks! She also enjoys meeting and talking with people from all walks of life. Diversity is welcome. She is BEYOND thrilled to be joining the esteemed She-Geeks team!" (She's so mad that she refers to herself in third person! lolol!)

Chimney the March Hare
"Hello Everyone. I'm the new manga Moderator, Chimney! I have been a She-Geek for nearly my entire life! I've always loved animation, but wasn't introduced to anime until roughly 15 years ago, manga followed behind at about roughly 7 years ago, and than I finally branched out to other comics (mostly Marvel) about a year ago. I'm also a rather big gamer though I do stick mainly to the RPGs (Persona 3 & 4 forever!). I don't tend to follow many television series, but I am a huge Once Upon a Time, Sherlock, and Psych fan. Well, there's a little bit about me. I know, I'm super awesome! Right? Anyway, I'm not very good about talking about myself, so if I left anything out that you would like to know feel free to ask!"

Kelly the Cheshire Cat
Kelly has been a crazy comic book lover since 1997 when she walked into her comic book store and discovered Johnny The Homicidal Maniac. Her love of all things science fiction date way back before she could even read. Kelly has a special place in her heart for all things cyberpunk, and loves the blend of sci-fi and noir/mystery stories. Favourite authors include Ray Bradbury, William Gibson, Raymond Chandler, and Douglas Adams. Favourite comic artists include Jeff Lemire, Fiona Staples, Alan Moore, and Warren Ellis.

Stefani the White Rabbit
Stefani goes by many names: Stef, Speling Expirt, Bread, CC, Pluggy, Scarface; the list is practically endless, and a lot worse if she steals the covers from her girlfriend. The two constants in her life are her love of geekery and her love of third person monologues.
Inducted into reading at the tender age of something very young, her passion was kindled by Roald Dahl and since then she's never really grown up. She loves to read fantasy, SciFi, the cereal box and anything close by - she knows the signs on the Subway by heart. Forced to realise her geekery would never go away, she discovered one of the most addictive gate way comics - BtVS and has been an avid reader of most things comicy ever since; although she does prefer the non-superhero variety.
TV is even worse, addicted to everything from GoT to Grey's Anatomy, Strike Back to Surburgatory and everything in between. Seriously why did Daria ever leave our screens?

Oh no, that's AWFUL.
And you play chess? :) I took a chess class in JR High. It was fun, but I remember very little of it now. You'd beat my ass probably.

Chimney, so glad we have a resident Manga expert! I'm scared of Manga now after reading your descriptions. Sounds a tad bizarre. LOL

message 5: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Lol, you cannot unsee, it's true. Shadow Star looks fairly innocent from the description and reviews I just read. There must be some hidden, sinister atrocities.

Also, my comic shop told me this week it's pronounced mooonga, like an "o" sound. Didn't know that.

Yes, it was awful. I had boxes of comics and books that I held onto since I was knee-high. After Katrina hit, I kind of felt defeated and decided I was probably getting too old to read comics anyways (I was 17 at the time). I didn't pick up another comic until four years later when I found that it helped alleviate some of the stress I built up from college. It was also around the same time I was unemployed and my 2 1/2-year relationship ended so I had a lot of time and void to fill up. In the least sappy way, you can say I rediscovered happiness through comic books =]

I'm okay at chess. The key is to think ahead but not too much ahead to where it becomes a distraction from your very next move. That's my problem, I over think my future moves, and next thing you know, one of my men gets snatched away in the dumbest way possible (x_x). I'm trying to get better so I can enter some local tournaments and make easy change.

Here's a link to the opening of the anime: Shadow Star Narutaru"

Ahhh, why do I always let curiosity kill me... I'm about to download that and watch it. I think at this point, nothing can scar me more than what I've already been involuntarily exposed to. For example, the first episode of Tokyo Tribe 2. I was disturbed everyday for a WEEK having seen that (T_T)

Kay, do tell how your viewing goes. I'm afraid of being scarred for life myself.

Chimney, for some reason I thought you read Manga. You're just getting into regular comics right? There's so much to loooove.

Awww, I'm sorry Kay. That sounds devastating all around. Losing things you cherish must be so difficult and starting over would be daunting. It's like all those possessions became a part of you and almost a tangible history of your life. Books/comics especially mean so much to me, and I hate the thought of losing old journals and photos too.

It's beautiful that comics were a comfort for you. That would be hard going through a break-up, unemployment, and the stress of college all at once, AFTER Katrina. Now you're on the other side. :)

New Orleans is the #1 place I want to visit in the US that I haven't been to yet. How is it fairing lately, as far as the re-build and the areas that were especially damaged? Is it your hometown or have you lived there for a long time?

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Michelle, Stefani, Barbara, Lashya - pleased to meet you all. I really love the people in this group.

Stefani, what is your tattoo?! Photos? You can have an Alice name too. :)
I want to get an Arthur Rackham Alice illustration (the one where cards are flying all around her) on my right leg someday, when I have hundreds of dollars to spare.

message 14: by michelle+8 (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Y'all are freaking me out with the manga. My 14yo daughter has recently started reading it because of her mother (who doesn't exactly have the best judgement), and I don't know anything about it. I was worried, but I trust my daughter because she *does* have good judgement. Now y'all have me worried that she's going to unintentionally stumble across something she can't unsee that will really freak her out. She already has nightmares because of all the stress from her mom. :(

Anna - I'd love an Alice name!
Anna and Chimney - I'm not entirely sure how to post photos on here (I'm useless with all thing technical) but I've got 'curiouser and curiouser written around my wrist with a cupcake on the inside of my wrist. I have pictures up on my Twitter feed but they aren't very good my user name is @Speling_Expirt One day I think I want to turn it into a literary bottom half sleeve or full sleeve but I'm worried that I'd be screwed job wise.

Oh, okay, I was confused when you said you have yet to read manga. Maybe you meant the freaktastic manga? :)

Michelle - Uh oh, hopefully Chimney can address your manga concerns. Maybe she can tell you tame and not-so-tame titles.

message 17: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Stefani, I LOVE THAT. Curiouser and curiouser, that's great.

Do you want to pick an Alice name or would you rather be christened with one? Here's a pretty extensive list of characters. Leg of Mutton, however, hardly qualifies as a character imho, although it did make me laugh. :) Plum-pudding is cuter for a girl.

Ooh if I was to pick it would be difficult to choose between Cheshire Cat and Dormouse. Both are my favourite characters and if I'm not smiling I'm sleeping, just not in teapots. Mainly because I haven't found one big enough. I'm happy to be christened with on though!

“And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversation?”

I was actually born around your neck of the woods in Houston, Anna. My family left shortly after I was born so I'm far from being Texas-fied. I lived in Hawaii, California, and Kansas before my family finally settled in New Orleans about 13 years ago. I love New Orleans. The culture and people are very distinct as well as laid-back, but I can't say things will ever return back to the way they were before the storm. A lot of local businesses are lost forever (including my grandma's grocery store), and there are dilapidated, large areas of New Orleans that still haven't been rebuilt. But what can you do, you know? We just keep it moving and enjoy life, music, and good food! You should definitely pay a visit. I've come across a handful of tourists that end up moving here.

I hate that I didn't get to see it before Katrina, but I'm determined to make it out there for a vacation. It's such a unique city.

I was actually born in Garden City, Kansas myself but I grew up near Texarkana, TX.
