Caritas of Austin Reading Club discussion

The first story Walls tells of her childhood is that of her burning herself severely at age three. She is hospitalized for her burns. Six weeks into her recovery,when her father dramatically and prematurely takes her home from the hospital, he tells her, "you're safe now" (p. 14). How did this opening story affect you as a reader? Why do you think Walls opens with this story, and how does it set the stage for the memoir?

This book was one that was, not only hard to put down, but one I had to put down to think about what I had just read.
