Some great stories I've read about mammals include Call of the Wild - Jack London (canines)
White Fang - Jack London (canines)
Watership Down - Richard Adams (rabbits)
Black Beauty - Anna Sewell (horses)
I just want to say that I've heard that the book Black Beauty, which is a fiction story about horses, is reputed to have made the world a better place for horses because it allowed people to find out what it was like to be a horse. Before Black Beauty people just thought they were some kind of machine for humans to exploit, just how we think of our cars now. In those days horses WERE the closest things they had to cars.
But this book showed people how to see the world from a horse's point of view. After reading it, most people were far kinder to their horses.
Too right. Over here in the UK horse welfare improved greatly after BB. One noted improvement to the daily life of the working horse was the appearance of horse drinking troughs. Another was the increased attention to harness comfort, disregarding fashion.
Great mammal books I've read and recommend are: Lassie Come Home by Eric Knight
Tarka The Otter by Henry Williamson
Six Pointer Buck by David Stephen
The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
The Dorset Squirrels trilogy by Michael Tod
The Cold Moons by Aeron Clement
Solo's Journey by Joy Smith Aiken
Those are but a few. There are so many great animal stories out there.
