David Krae (davidkrae) The classic comedy 'Strange Brew' with Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, reprising popular characters, Bob & Doug McKenzie, from SCTV was based on Hamlet (albeit loosely).

If you have seen the movie, how many Hamlet references does it have?

The most obvious -- Elsinore Brewery!

I do t know exactly how many Hamlet references there are in the movie. I've seen it probably 200 times. And I still don't know. It is a definitive Canadian movie though.

Below following the link... Is a heady piece on the relationship between the movie and the play....

David Krae (davidkrae) That's a pretty fun essay! :) In another couple weeks it'll be time to crack out the Bob & Doug holiday album!

While Strange Brew may be a re-telling of Hamlet, there are a lot of other movies that are modern updates of Shakespearean plots -- like 'Ten Things I Hate About You' (Taming of the Shrew) or 'Just One of The Guys' (Twelfth Night) or the more recent 'She's the Man' based on the same.

Here's a link to some more:

Of course, Strange Brew continues to be perhaps the most iconic Shakespeare re-interpretation of all time. ;)
