Indian Readers discussion

This thread is to recommend the authors who are not so famous among English book readers..

There are aplenty of great authors writing in various languages.. We know few thanks to Nobel Prize for literature.. And some through very good promotions..

You may have read some authors in your own language or some through translations.. This thread is to introduce them to fellow readers.. This could help people not to ignore those unfamiliar names in the bookstores.. :)

This is a very interesting discussion.
I like to mention always E.T.A. Hoffmann who was a German writer in the first years of the 19th century. He isn't very famous, at least here in Italy, but I love his stories (he wrote above all short stories). There is a mix of mistery, supernatural and folly. The reader doesn't know if the character is a fool or if there is something supernatural in the story.
There are a lot of collections of short stories by him and his only novel is The Devil's Elixirs.
Yesterday, finally, after a lot of years, I could find another book by Hoffmann: The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr. It will arrive next week.

I have a friend who insists that Bolano is the greatest writer who ever lived. do check out his works, if you wish to. i have read nothing by him. it's a recommendation on redirect. :)

Petals of Blood by Ngugi wa Thiong'o is a beautiful book. There are other books by him which are even more acclaimed, but I've read only this one.


There are many great African writers writing in English, but it is a deviance from the thread, so this is the only name I can think of.
