Tina J I read the first book 'Ashes' over a year ago and loved it. I've only recently aquired the second book, which I'm currently reading.

The problem is, I can't remember hardly any of the characters in the town 'Rule'.
The only people I remember is Alex, Ellie, Tom & Chris.
I'm on chapter 10 at the moment and really struggling!
Who's Peter? Or Lena? Or the old people with powers?
Or anyone for that matter! lol

If you've read past chapter 10......please, no spoilers!

Rachael Peter is the leader of the army which Chris is a part of.
Lena is a girl who lives in Jess's household
um..the people with powers...i can't remember exactly.
Jess is the leader of the house that Alex lives in.
that's a bout all that i can remember off the top of my head.

Elizabeth The old people with the powers are basically from the council and Rule. Lena is basically the girl who Alex described as having a bad temperament and tried to make out with Chris, Chris does not like Lena. Peter Chris's older brother is the army of rule leader. Sooo ya!

Elizabeth I am sorry I know this had nothing to do with what you asked but if you think there are many characters in this book why don't you just read the Gone series. There are about 60 different characters in Gone and I remembered them all! Quit whining people on the shadows book review page about how you don't remember them all just reread the first book! There are only about 15 different characters that are really important! You don't have to remember them all and whine! OK I am done ranting now thank you.

Devin The old people with powers are like the grandparents. I was as confused as you are with the second book and the thrid really doesnt call to me.

I read the first book and I got extremely confused about who was the good guys and who were bad and what was with the guy who runs McDonalds. Soooo confusing.

Joe The first third of the book is an absolute mess, I think 1/2 the reviews on this site mention confusion in the early chapters. It does get better.

Marybeth alex is the main character.who meets tom after she meets ellie. jess is the leader in her household that alex lives with while in rule. the changed are the ones with the superpowers. i thought these books were confusing at first and its been a while since i read the book but it does get better. it is one of thosebooks that you really have to pay attention to.

I agree. I only read the first one a few months ago, but getting into the second one was way too frustrating.

Elizabeth The author has a blog and she has a short refresher on it. http://www.ilsajbick.com/?page_id=1967
Very helpful.

Elizabeth In the book Monster she has a list of characters, who they are, and what was currently happening. so helpful!!

At the back of the book. I reread #1 to refresh, then #2 only to discover the list after the story. It would have been better if it was before. But I enjoyed the reread regardless

Go to the back of the Shadows for a character list, if rereading #1 doesn't interest you. I reread Ashes, then Shadows, because I was lost, only to discover the helpful character list after the new story. Inconveniently placed.

Paige Im so happy that the third book has a character list at the back, it makes it a lot easier to understand.
