The voting period is over for our group read and we have TWO winners! The Taming & Fortune's Lady. Either book is yours to choose for the group read. Thank you all for voting, and it was an amazing turn-out considering it's the holiday season! You made the voting period a challenge, and the competition for both The Taming & Fortune's Lady were fierce! I'm delighted both won after an intense week and a half. :)

They were neck in neck the entire time and both topped at eleven votes, with Royal Seduction with an amazing nine votes. Get your copy - dead tree or ebook - and join in on the discussion here. :)

The Taming by Jude Deveraux

Fortune's Lady by Patricia Gaffney

I'll crack open The Taming soon as I'm done with my current read. :)

Tutti Dolci (tuttidolci) | 27 comments Dear gawd...I have officially become a bodice ripper WHOREder.

Why? Because I actually have the paperback copies of all the books in the poll. LOL

Think I'll go with The Taming.

It is. Lol. And the shelves keep on expanding. Who knew that there were so many bodice rippers out there?

I had no idea when I first starting grabbing them left and right. My shelves are overwhelmed at all the vintage smut.

Mystikfire | 7 comments I'm new to the group and figuring out how all this works! But I believe I have read both those books :)

Tutti Dolci (tuttidolci) | 27 comments Welcome, Mystikfire!

It's not too hard to get acquainted with this group.

And...whaddaya know...I found Fortune's Lady, practically calling out to me today. So instead of The Taming, I'm going to read this one.

I love both of them, and Fortune's Lady was one of my infamous MIA books.

Started The Taming yesterday. Initial thoughts: I don't know why JD is/was so popular. I've only read 1 other book of hers as a teen & recall not liking it either. Something about the writing is turning me off but can't quite put my finger on it yet.

I've always liked JD and I think her books are entertaining, but she does have a very modern tone with her writing style. The characters don't feel medieval to me. Her style is far from Teresa Denys or Marilyn Harris who seem to truly capture the time period.

I always liked The Taming, but sometimes it gave me the impression that it presumed too much. The heroine had it all /the hero figured out early on. XD

Liana is the doormattiest of the doormatty. Holy mackerel, I wanna slap her.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 840 comments Mod
I loved JD back in the day,but then I liked Johanna Lindsey too..now if I re-read the books by them I have stored away..I wonder.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I must have missed a paragraph somewhere because Liana went from hating the smelly earl who dresses in lice-infested clothes to absolutely adoring him and waiting for any crumb of affection (which she thinks she'll get by being loyal and obedient). Arrgh. Hair-pulling going on here.... :P

Yeah, he reminds me of some sort of fanatical, ultra fasting and ration type of husband; you eat too many peas at supper, and he cuts you off for a week.

She is pretty doormatty, I remember that one MIA book I still cannot find, the heroine went along with every atrocious thing that happened to her, and didn't seem all too affected by numerous rapes/slavery situations. LOL

message 20: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 30, 2012 05:54AM) (new)

What really turned me off the hero is that he grabs a greasy hunk of meat, snarfs it and then wipes his hands on his spanking new clothes. Dude! Ugh. And THEN.... (view spoiler) OMG, this chick. Too early to toss her onto the TSTL shelf? :P

message 21: by Tutti (new)

Tutti Dolci (tuttidolci) | 27 comments Ya know...when I realized that one of the reading options was a JD book, I wasn't so keen on jumping to read it. Funny thing is that I have several JD books in my shelves (which I will eventually read) but I remember reading a couple of them in my younger days and thinking them to be kinda "Meh." And like Karla said, with heroines who are often TSTL. So, I'm biased, I suppose.

As for Fortune's Lady, so far, so good. *crosses fingers that it doesn't suck.*

message 22: by Tamara (new)

Tamara | 5 comments The reads sound good. I have never read either one. Unfortunately I'm way over my book budget for the year. Lol.

Tutti Dolci (tuttidolci) | 27 comments Anyone reading Fortune's Lady? I'm 200 plus pages in and must say that I'm digging the build up. The wedding night made me feel a little teary, which is a good thing.

I've always loved Fortune's Lady, but never felt like it was a bodice ripper. I wish the 'jumping in the fountain in Paris' would have been an actual scene, instead of rumored about. :P

Yes, I put it in my Bodice Ripper shelf today and thought, "I don't see the 'Bodice Ripper' aspect of it." However, upon further scrutiny, I realized that they do go from biased (and even feelings of contempt) in the beginning, to LOVE. So in that sense, I can see why it can qualify as a BR (plus, he does force himself upon her a few times, even if he doesn't de-flower her until their wedding night).

I don't rightly recall the hero outright molesting her, and at no point in time were there any actual all out brawls or defensive stances where her virtues were concerned. I felt as though the truest bodice ripper material was merely relayed or referred to, it wasn't shown, and that is an instant where censorship is a replacement for bodice ripper content. Nevertheless, it's a lovely little romance.

I just finished Fortune's Lady on my kindle and I am not sure I would classify it as a bodice ripper

I do have to say though that it was a very good story and I am glad I read it.

Tutti Dolci (tuttidolci) | 27 comments I finished Fortune's Lady today. Definitely NOT a Bodice Ripper, still a worthwhile Romance, but not anything to get too excited about. In fact, it was more like a "Nice read. Next!" LOL

I'm actually gonna hit The Taming, next. Besides, I want to compare notes with Karla, whose commentary is always pretty priceless (i.e. hilarious). :-P
