Nina (ninaelin) Hi,

I'm new to this group, but I am so glad I found it. I joined Goodreads in July this year and can't be entirely sure if I've remembered to list all the books I read prior to that, but it looks as I will end up with a total of 40 books for 2012 without even trying. My TV died a few weeks ago, so I am reading a lot more these days, and I decided to set myself a little challenge - I want to read 50 pages a day throughout the year - i.e. 18,250 pages in total. That averages out as 52 books of 350 pages each, so I am aiming for 50 as some books will be a lot longer than that.

I haven't set myself a reading list for the whole year yet, but my first priority is to finish reading all the books I have hard copies of first. I will be moving into a mobile home to go travelling around Europe at some point next year, so I am trying to minimise all my belongings as much as possible. This seems like the perfect way to indulge two of my favourite interests: reading and minimalism! If I can stick to it, I will get through all my remaining hard copies by the end of March. After that I will just be reading books on my Kindle (a minimalist's dream library, lol!).

I am really looking forward to getting to know the other people in this group!

Best of luck with your challenges, everyone!

:oD

Welcome to the group! It sounds like you have an AMAZING plan for 2013 -- 50 pages a day, reading books you own, and driving through Europe! What an exciting adventure!

Good luck on both the reading (and minimalizing!) and the traveling :) I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress on both of those.

Nina (ninaelin) Thank you so much, Tiffany! Strangely I didn't get a notification about your answer so I didn't see it till now. I think I might struggle a little to finish all my hard copies by the end of March as I will probably want to participate in group reads that will slow down my reading of the books I already own. Perhaps end of April/May would be a more realistic goal. As long as I get through them all, I will be happy! :oD

Nina (ninaelin) My original plan was to finish reading all my remaining hardcopy books by March, but during the holiday period I decided I wanted to reread the Harry Potter books, so I haven't made a start on the hardcopies yet.

These are the books I've read so far this year:

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3) by J.K. Rowling

and

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling

I've also read two short stories by Kurt Vonnegut, but I won't be counting those towards my total of 50.

I'm currently just over 20% into Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Nina (ninaelin) I've just finished two more books:

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) by J.K. Rowling

and

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter #6) by J.K. Rowling

I'm 22% into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (the last book in the series).

Nina (ninaelin) Here's an update of the books I've read recently:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter, #7) by J.K. Rowling

and

The Chocolate Kiss (Chocolate, #2) by Laura Florand

and

The Chocolate Thief (Chocolate, #1) by Laura Florand

and

The Runaway Princess by Hester Browne

and

This I Know Notes on Unraveling the Heart by Susannah Conway

So that's 9 books so far this year.

Nina (ninaelin) Another update - the books I've read since my last post are:

Swept off Her Feet by Hester Browne

and

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (reread this one)

and

If You Want to Write A Book about Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland

and

Cupcakes at Carrington's by Alexandra Brown

and

Pusser's Progress by Pusser Hill (no page numbers but approx. 21,300 words)

I've also read Notes on Full Timing by Armand Foster, but as it was only 46 pages long I will not count it towards my goal of 50 books.

So that's 14 books so far, but the Goodreads 2013 Reading Challenge has the number down as 17.

Nina (ninaelin) New update - books read since my last update include:

The Happy Minimalist by Peter Lawrence

and

No Impact Man by Colin Beavan

and

Dracula by Bram Stoker

and

Following Atticus Forty-Eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship by Tom Ryan

I have also read some poetry and a cookbook, which I won't count towards my total.

So that's 18 books and well over 7000 pages so far, which means I am on track (or a little ahead, actually). :oD

Nina (ninaelin) Time for another update - since Following Atticus I have read the following books:

Marie Potter and The Campervan of Doom by Brian Burke
(Marie Potter and the Campervan of Doom - hilarious)

and

An Old Babylonian Version of the Gilgamesh Epic on the Basis of Recently Discovered Texts by Morris Jastrow Jr.

and some poetry that I won't count

and

Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4) by Dan Brown

and

I Can Barely Take Care of Myself Tales From a Happy Life Without Kids by Jen Kirkman

I'm currently trying to finish two books that I have started reading as I have signed up for two literature courses on Coursera, which both start on the 3rd of June. So there's lots to read over the next few months, but I can't wait - it's been ages since I last studied literature! :oD

Anyway, that's 22 books and just over 8300 pages. Still on track for 50 books in 2013. ;o)

Nina (ninaelin) Oops, it's been a while since my last update!

Here's what I've been reading since my May update:

Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel

I've also 'reread' all the HP books, as I was given the audiobooks by a lovely friend of mine. I won't bother to list them all here, but that's another 7 books and 2834 pages.

I've also read

The Ice Palace
(I read it in Norwegian)

and

Little Brother

and

Manon Lescaut

and

Nostradamus' testamente

and

A Winter Book

and

Police
(I read it in Norwegian)

and

The Elegance of the Hedgehog

and

Someday, Someday, Maybe

So the total is now 39 books (as I'm not counting short stories) and 15,010 pages.

Nina (ninaelin) How could I forget I also reread Jane Eyre?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

So that's 40 books and 15,342 pages! ;o)

message 12: by Nina (new)

Nina (ninaelin) Two more - both of Russell Brand's Booky Wooks:

My Booky Wook by Russell Brand and Booky Wook 2 This Time it's Personal by Russell Brand

Nina (ninaelin) I am happy to report I made it to 50 books before the end of the year! The end-of-year statistics (according to my own spreadsheet) show that I completed 51 books, was still in the process of reading another 6, and read 12 short-stories.

Here are the books I've read (and completed) since my last update:

Is It Just Me? by Miranda Hart The Pollyanna Plan by Talli Roland Wake Up A Life of the Buddha by Jack Kerouac True You A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself by Janet Jackson Hitler History in an Hour Unabridged by Rupert Colley The Vampyre A Tale by John William Polidori Diary of a Dog Walker Time Spent Following a Lead by Edward Stourton Demon Dentist by David Walliams The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde Lady Susan by Jane Austen

And here are the ones I started but did not finish by the end of the year:
The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac Is That a Fish in Your Ear? Translation and the Meaning of Everything by David Bellos Bird by Bird Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky Bildung. Alles, was man wissen muß by Dietrich Schwanitz Peas & Queues The Minefield of Modern Manners by Sandi Toksvig

I'm ashamed to admit that I actually started reading The Brothers Karamazov in December 2012 - it really is time I finish it soon! ;o)
