Identify an important theme in your text.

Please consult your rubric and models to ensure that you are doing your best work!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about?
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Jevel Gilbert | 18 comments In the realistic fiction book called "The Test" by Pery Kern, an important theme is the importance making good choices. In this story, sixteen year old Liselle is pregnant by a boy name Oscar. She know has dropped out of school because she was pregnant. Also, she had a fight with her mother and left her house. She is scared of what might happen next. The text states, ''But the longer she pretended nothing was wrong, the more she tried to starve and sleep the problem away, the sicker she felt.'' This quote shows that Liselle doesn't know what choices she is going to make and how it is effected her future. This can effect her future because she is having a baby that could change every thing of her life and later on.

Matthew | 34 comments In the fiction book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney, the theme is think before you act. Greg took a lot of advice from people and for the most part it didnt work out. For example, Greg's Uncle Gary told him he "should look in dad's closet because sometimes grown-up have vintage stuff that looks cool." Greg found a cool leather jacket in his dad's closet and wore it to school without his mother's permission. His mother showed up at school and made him take the jacket off in front of everyone. Greg told her it was too cold to walk home without a jacket so his mom gave him her jacket, which was embarassing. This shows that Greg should have thought before acting because if he did he wouldn't have been embarassed.

Melanie M. (MissMello) | 21 comments In the Realistic fiction book "The Bully" by Paul Langan Darrell is being bullied and since he has moved to California his two friends are not there to help him with the bully. The theme is to not be afraid of telling your parents anything even if its the most embarrassing thing in the whole world. For example Darrell said " He used to tell his mother everything that happened at school, but he stopped doing that when thing got embarrassing. He liked having her think everything is okay, although it made him feel more alone." His mom still thinks till this day that he is okay with them moving but really he is not the Author is just trying to teach you that if you got something on your chest and want to talk to someone about it talk to your parents even if its the most embarrassing thing in the universe.

Trinity Burgos | 31 comments In the autobiography novel ''The Lost Boy'' by Dave Pelzer, David has been having a really tuff time ever since he left the house. The theme is to never be afraid to ask for help when in need. For example, David states ''Dont you think she'd worried about you?''He asks. ''Right! Are you kidding?''I blur out.Oops, I say to myself. Keep your mouth shut! I tap my finger on the jar. Turning away from mark.'' This text shows that even though David so badly wants to tell Mark what's happening, he's still afraid of his reaction, and still afraid of his mother coming back to get him after he had left.

Trinity Burgos | 31 comments This proves my Theme because, it shows that David is having trouble telling him what's wrong so it doesn't help him with what he's going through.

Mark | 33 comments In the book The Scorch Trials the big idea and theme so far is, you always need support to survive. Thomas and some other gladers made it out of the glade, they survived the glade trials but now they are in a different trial. Teresa has disappeared out of the cabin and went to a random city in the middle of the desert. Thomas and the other gladers leave the cabin and go off into the desert for two reasons. First, if they don’t leave the cabin they will die and the other reason is to go find Teresa. Thomas and the gladers have the flare, a disease that will turn you into a zombie. A quote from the book that supports the idea in order to survive you’ll need support. “Look we can’t do this alone its 11 of us up against thousands of cranks we need help, alright hermano you got your teams its all of us with your guys Jorge said. Ok so we have all of your support, Yep every single person aint no way you’re gonna survive out there without support so your gonna need us, also I want that cure Jorge said, alright it’s a deal I responded.” This quote shows that you need support to survive by enlightening us so as to without support from Jorge they would have died since all of the cranks would have killed them but with support they have a better chance because Jorge has a bunch of men helping.

Kimora Irby | 25 comments In the relistic fiction book Just Listen by Sarah Dessen Annabel is now starting to have a friendship with Oscar she listen to his radio station and they sit down for lunch discussing the type of music he plays and she gives him opinion of the music he plays. There were rumors around school saying that Oscar and Annabel were dating and she didn't really care what anybody said about her and oscar.

The theme is finding out who you really are because in the begining of the book Annabel thought she was this perfect girl with friends and a great family but suddenly everything changed and she realized that she wasn't.

Monica | 43 comments In the fantasy book, Marked, by P.C Cast and Kristen Cast, my protagonist, Zoey is living up to the most important theme ever. The theme is to always stand up to whats right. Zoey was the new fledgling that would be entered into the house of night. But she got marked in a very miraculous way. She already got marked up to the standards where a adult vampyre had gone through. Ever since the full moon ritual, the circle that Neferet, the high pristess had casted, Zoey felt the five elements as Neferet had called forth each one. But one day, when Aphrodite, a very nasty and cold-hearted girl invited Zoey to the dark daughter's meeting, Zoey was very surprised. When she got there, Aphrodite passed a goblet full of wine, at least Zoey thought it was wine, to the protagonist. She drank it up hungrily, but Aphrodite wanted to do is to get Zoey to be ashamed of herself. Zoey finally knew what Aphrodite was up to, so then she began to talk to Neferet. "Neferet did seem way smart to fall for Aphrodite's games. She probably already knew something was up with the hags. Maybe all she needed was someone to stand up and say something to her." (201.) This quote shows Zoey's thoughts based on whether to talk to Neferet about Aphrodite or not. She and her friends all knew that Aphrodite was up to no good, but they didn't know what to do about it. Standing up for whats right is a very important theme and I think that the author is trying to teach us that.

Kailey | 23 comments In the fantasy book New Moon written by Stephenie Meyer, and important time period is when Bella has her dream. Jacob was changing into a werewolf and he couldn't tell Bella. He told her she must figure it out on her own.She had the dream where she couldn't move in the middle of the forest. A husky caramel colored wolf was standing next to her ; But it was 5 times bigger than a wolf. Yet, it had the same eyes as Jake, and there she woke up realizing who Jake really was. This was important because she realized she had a very different life, like she was living out of a fantasy book about werewolfs and vampires.

In An Na's realistic fiction book "A Step from Heaven", the protagonist is Young Ju who is growing up after making an arrival in America. Young Ju has been growing up with her parents and her brother Joon. Ju's parents always ends up in fights which affects Ju growing up in life. Ju's father is the one who gets drunk and gets violent. Young Ju lately have had a big problem in her family that caused the family to fall apart. The family came to America for a better life, but couldn't reach what they needed. Young Ju's father had been mad over the amount of money he earns, he no longer believes that he could have a better life in America. He starts a fight with her wife and then things got violent. Young Ju's father was arrested and he divorced his wife. Young Ju was very heart broken. After reading this, it shows a big theme. On page 107 (Pages Different on Nook), "Apa throws me on the couch and stands in front of me heaving, his nostrils flared, eyes think with anger. Apa starts hitting his family and then on page 110, "After the police handcuff Apa and take him away, Uhmma drives down to the police station with her face so badly bruised and misshapen an officer forces her to go to a hospital." These quotes shows how Apa (Young Ju's father) was getting violent and then gets his life in a very bad condition where he does not want to be. He was then arrested and also lost his family. He almost lost everything he had and now he has no more hope for a better future. This example shows a theme to don't let your anger control you because it can cause you to have bad results. Apa was angry that he had no hope in America so he got violet. He let go of himself to let his anger take control, he was soon fighting and got in big trouble. Therefore, the biggest theme of my book is to don't let anger control you because it can cause bad results.

Steven Lin | 27 comments In the book Flowers for Algernon by daniel keyes, the big idea and theme is, change is a good thing some times. Charlie was retarded and nobody liked him. His friends would laugh at him because of it. He wanted to get the surgery because he did not to be stupid anymore. He got the surgery and had become smarter. He was happy with the out come of what happen because he had gotten more friends and he is now smarter. He was happy that he was smart and he did not want to go back to being stupid because he did not want to lose every thing that he had done. Ever since he had gotten the surgery he had gotten a better life and he was treated completely different. He had gotten more respect and had lived his life better. In the end of the where he starts to go back to his old self he was afraid that the people that knew the smart him would not treat him like how they used to and he might lose all of his friends.

Elva C. | 40 comments In the fantasy book Betrayed by P.C Cast and Kristin Cast, Zoey, the protagonist has fought off the mean bully, Aphrodite in the House of Night, and Zoey is now the new leader of the Dark Daughters and Sons. One theme in the book to trust what you want to do. In the book, Zoey has to make plans for the Dark Daughters and Son's and she is thinking that she should add some people in the Dark Daughters and Sons that were in the Dark Daughters and Sons when Aphrodite was the leader, so that the others that were in the Council will not think that Zoey is not getting over on Aphrodite. Stevie Rae and Zoey's other friends are disapproving that she should add people from the Council, when Aphrodite was the leader. "I don't see how that could be a good idea." This quote shows that Zoey's friend, Damien disagree that Zoey should add a senior that was in Aphrodite's Council, because Damien thinks that it will not work, because everyone that was in Aphrodite's Council are mean, and bullies. Zoey disagrees, and wants to add them into the Council because she believes that people act different than in public than in private. Zoey is going to go with the idea of adding an ex Council to her new Council.

Essam Alhumoz | 20 comments In my realistic fiction book "Shine" by Lauren Myracle the protagonist is a 15 year old girl named Cat. Cat has just found out that her best friend Patrick has just been beaten and put into the hospital for being a homosexual. I think that the theme of the book is to Put labels on people, and hate them for it. "Patrick's just about my best friend friend, even though he is--. This quote shows that Cats brother was putting a label on Patrick. I believe that people should just try to look past labels and look at how the person really is not what other people say about him because it wont always be true. That's what Lauren Myracle is trying to show us in her book is to try and look past the labels people are given in life, because they are not always true.

Ramsey (TheRamsey3000) | 7 comments In the fiction book "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher, Clay the protagonist has revived some disturbing tapes from a girl named Hannah who committed suicide the day before. Those tapes show thirteen reasons why she committed suicide and Clay is one of those reasons. The theme in the book is to help someone before its to late. Hannah had been very depressed lately with all the bad things in the would she's witnessed, such as a killing, a rape and being humiliated. She recorded all her thought on tape and sent them to all the people she feels caused her to committe suicide and Clay is one of them. One thing that happened was when she was at the party with Clay they kissed, but she didn't feel right about it so she sent Clay away and stayed in the room crying. Clay could have helped her because he knew she was depressed, but he didn't and then something worse happened. She witnessed a rape! When she was in the room when a couple of drunk people stumbled in, the girl passed out and the guy went to the door to guard it from anyone coming in. But he did let his friend cone in, he knew he could have stopped it but he didn't. Hannah was hiding in the closet when it happened and she said so herself "I could have stopped it." She could have but she was to depressed and afraid to. "I wanted the world to stop... to end" is what she said after the rape "For Hannah, the world did end."

Justin Yu | 20 comments In the mystery novel The Vault by Ruth Rendell the main character is a detective. He wonders about and finds an underground chamber with 3 bodies inside, 2 were dead, the other one was still alive. Twelve years later, another body appears. The detective wonders, "how did that 4th body get there?" He wonders a lot he becomes stressed. Don't give and focus, but don't focus too hard. Though there are many hardships being focused is the most important thing in the mystery that stands here in the book
