If you get upset about the days when you could see a major league game for $5 and players were happy to play the game for the love pure joy it gave them, you'll want to read about Homer Newbody.
He is a throwback to the golden era of baseball. Which player is the last to best exemplify the lead character in Mike Reuther's wonderful homage to men who played the game out of respect and love for the game's traditions?

Gee. I can't think of any other book that so exemplifies what it means to play for the pure joy of the game, but hey ... I'm biased.
Of course, there's always "The Glory of Their Times."
